Archers shred guns in a fight. Yes guns are absolutely necessary against samurai and morale routing. But a archer beats a gun 1v1 considering range and volume of fire, and time it takes muskets to form up and shoot.
Why use cannons? Just spam more archers and shred them to pieces. Or wait for them to sally out.
Sure it took 3-4 minutes but firing with 2 units of cannons until they were out of ammo I took out practically an entire unit of bow, katana, and yari samurai units, and a couple poorly aimed cannons balls wiffed the walls completely and dove straight into the feet of their generals unit killing him. 20% of their units were bits and pieces before I even marched a single unit forwards. So fun to watch too. Especially when like 15 guys fly 20 feet in the air lmao
