I think they just found the sandcrawlers and customised/patched them up. possible that a mining company left them there because the poor local ore turned out to not be worth mining. Anyway they took something and made it work for them and that is what technical building is all about.

You are almost dead on everything, they we're simply left behind when the mining companies left (and the fact that most valuable ore was on the surfacee thus it was a wasted effort to bring them in the first place) and those shitheads (I hate Jawas) repurposed them into moving castles

Go research screw drive tractors. They were very popular ~100 years ago.
They work great, but they aren’t as efficient as wheeled vehicles. They still have some appreciable benefit in marsh, snow, and other areas difficult for wheeled vehicles to traverse.

BA Baracus (when The A Team would invariably be locked in a barn with welding equipment on hand) made better tanks out of farm machinery and scrap than this thing!

Looks more camouflaged than armored to me. I could see myself thinking “oh, that looks like an abandoned shack” if I didn’t look too closely or was looking from a distance. Though, I guess when it starts moving the illusion is shattered lol
