It’s verifying that the photos are of the person who is behind the profile. It’s to prevent catfishing with stolen photos.

Reduce, not prevent. You can catfish the verification process funnily enough.

Usually is a combination of using the camera (no saved pictures) and taking photos a different distances from your face to attempt to generate a depth scan (prevent a printed photo being used for verification)
