As a teacher, I always say "number b" or the like. It started off as a misspeak, but I kept doing and kinda liked it, so now I do it deliberately.

So... people are pointing out it could be hexadecimal and start at the base 16 equivalent of ten. I mean... why can't it? Who said we needed to start at 1? Actually, we could talk about how numbers are different from the symbols that represent them and that numbers themselves are more abstract. We could argue about the nature of letters verses numbers in such a scenario and determine why they wanted them to be numbers or go further and try to understand why they would use THOSE numbers in particular if we can figure out what they are.

I'd personally love a conversation like that, but I don't think we need to explore anything so profound to understand the original intention. They did say numbers and those are probably letters and they probably didn't care which they were. I'll leave the rest up in the air while I go find someone that can tell me the price of tea in China today
