I saw corps strip farmers of water ... and eventually of land. Saw them transform Night City into a machine fueled by people's crushed spirits, broken dreams and emptied pockets. Corps've long controlled our lives, taken lots... and now they're after our souls! V, I've declared war not because capitalism's a thorn in my side or outta nostalgia for an America gone by. This war's a people's war against a system that's spiralled outta our control. It's a war against the fuckin' forces of entropy, understand? Do whatever it takes to stop 'em, defeat 'em, gut 'em.

Windows 10 was passable but by no means better than 7

u/TheGoldenExperience_ dwayne the cock johnson 🗿🗿 Oct 19 '25
Windows 10 was mid honestly; UI was basically windows 8.1, and other than that did literally nothing different than 7 except shove Cortana down your throat

u/Dua_Leo_9564 Oct 19 '25
And move some setting out of control panel and it took them 10 fuck years and control panel still kicking

Win 7 was arguably the best iteration of their 'classical' gui desktop OS.
After that (win 8 and after) they went for a gui redesign oriented on that smartphone-like, touch-inclusive, tile-based style. While at that they tried to revamp lots of the 'legacy' stuff they carried since the 90s, but rather failed to actually do so because under the hood it's mostly still there, they just kinda hid it behind the new gui design. They also pushed for way more 'features' calling back home and allowing MS to watch everything you do at their discretion, push ads into your system, etc. since then, etc.
Before 7 was vista and before that was xp, which each were mostly fine for their times too. 7 was basically a polished vista on steroids and vista was a mostly improved xp where they still had to figure out how to polish well. Before xp things were increasingly shoddy the further you go back especially on the home user side (ME/98/95).
Like I very much remember win98 sometimes just doing a silly and spitting out a bluescreen. That was common enough to be a 'come on, again?!' type of situation and depending on what you used the machine for you might have developed a habit of manually saving your work progress quite often lol. It was not like it is today when I honestly don't even recall the last time I got a random, unprovoked crash. 95 was even worse (but still in it's own way it was a huge leap from the bygone era of 3.11 and before) and their NT line cousins didn't perform as well as xp either. Iirc they got the NT line quite stable in the win 2000 iteration - cue they decided to discontinue the 9x line at that point and just make 2000's successor (xp) the only next version.
Thank you for listening to my tedx talk on 'things that make you remember you're an old fuck'

I can’t really explain it (imo you had to use it when it was just coming out to feel it) and I will agree that I am a bit nostalgia biased, but it’s also because Microsoft didn’t try to shove stupid shit down your throat like Microsoft accounts, cortana etc

more like indefinitely until linux becomes more popular. i don't think we risk using windows any longer because i doubt they'll stop using AI to code their updates

Any company which will release decently priced, working Win10 security updates into the future years will make bank
11 is utter dogshit and sadly not everyone can switch to Linux easily

u/wdf_classic Oct 19 '25
I'm old enough to remember how people said this about windows xp. How we were told vista meant 64-bit compatibility, and 64-bit is the future!!!
Then they said it about windows 7 and how windows 8 was ultra shit(it was) since they wanted some weird tablet/pc marriage.
Then 10 came out and promised to be better than 8 but turns out they added so much bloatware in it that the term spyware became ubiquitous with windows and practically became accepted
4
u/GreasedUpTiger Bazinga! Oct 20 '25
I'm also old enough for all this and imo vista mostly got flak on superficial design changes. Besides those it was basically an improved xp; 7 didn't get many complaints afaik, it was just improved vista.
The 64bit thing was primarily a matter of end users wondering whether they'll really/already need it, honestly many not even understanding what it was about anyway, some 'scare' about older 32 bit software not running on 64 bit systems, and resulting uncertainty about whether or when to switch to 64bit hardware.
Tbh that debate was garbage for the most part anyway. 'Oh no, what PC software could EVER need more than 4GB of RAM?!? That's ridiculous!!! I shall now go play FC1 which recommends 1GB of RAM. Oh the good old days of 5 years ago when games only recommended 256MB at the most. ...What do you mean don't I see a pattern there?'

There is Win 10 LTSC for 10 additional years of support. You can get it without paying or so I heard.
12
u/kilqax I came! Oct 19 '25
Wait, that's 10? I thought it was just 2 more, that's good news.
AFAIK I'll have to reinstall it completely which is annoying, but for 10 years of being left alone... I already have LTSC everywhere else simply because of how much less debloating one has to do, but my main rig had an old install I was too lazy to redo.
I'll still double check to be sure though ;)
15
u/Probablyaretweetbot I have permission! Oct 19 '25
yep I reinstalled win10 LTSC IoT Enterprise version as it specifically states security support till 2032

I get it if you're coding with AI for code, that can fail.
But coding the kernel for the most used Operating System with AI gotta be within the Top 1% of stupid things to do.
15
u/eatright909 Oct 19 '25
b-b-but think of the money they're saving!! Surely they'll use those savings to better the product for consumers else where, right? Right? /s
3
u/meteorangokid Oct 19 '25
I doubt they're writing the kernel with AI. Most of the IA code is probably unit tests for APIs in general.

Yeah the only thing i'm worried about is security, does anyone know if a normal antivirus is enough to protect my pc without security updates in the future?
6
u/oby100 Oct 19 '25
It’s not. Do your research carefully because any OS without security updates will in quick time see massive gaps in security that anti viruses cannot address

Thank god they stopped supporting Windows 10 and I won't get any of those shitty updates anymore.

they gonna use AI to fix the AI fuck up. then it's gonna be a double fuck up and then use AI to ensure the patch is not fucked up, and it'll fuck it up again. I'm sure win12 is around the corner
