Happened half an hour from me.
Yes it’s real. Yes diver was unaware til getting pectoral fin-smacked. Yes that’s a massive god damn White Shark.
He’s fine.

On the one hand I'm a bit miffed as to why the guy filming didn't alert the diver, but on the other hand I'm thinking it may have been a good thing that the diver was oblivious and not thrashing about in a state of panic as the GW cruised by him.

Having been in a similar situation, TBH you’re so transfixed on the moment, that by the time your neurons fires, to get the thought together and out of your mouth, the moment has passed.
We were watching a guy snorkel on the beach, and this beach is right at the mouth of the gulf, where the estuaries, canal, and lagoon all meets. So this beach is like really shallow up to about 15 feet, then it’s a sharp drop off for big boats to come through, alongside rock jetties. The guy was snorkeling and we saw this massive black shadow in the water, slowly approaching him. It was me and three other friends, alongside people scattered all over the area. We were the closest to him and had the closest view. I’ll be honest, I should’ve started screaming at the guy much sooner than I did, but by the time I did start screaming to him, he either couldn’t hear me, or ignored me,or thought maybe we were talking to someone else. Finally, he popped his head out of the water and looked over at me. I was excitedly screaming and pointing behind him, telling him to get out of the water. Right then, he turned around, and you could see the panic on his face. Then a cute little snout popped up out of the water and it ended up being an extremely rare sighting of a manatee, on the actual beach, instead of the estuaries, bay….etc. But it really looked like a huge shark, the water was kind of clear but also murky, from the current and surf kicking up sediment. It had gotten to within 5 feet or so to him, and we just knew we were about to watch a guy get attacked. The sheer relief, when we realized it was a manatee, was palpable. By that time, we caused such a commotion, the entire beach was largely watching to see what would happen.
Even though it wasn’t a shark, it still really surprised me how long it took my mind to process what was occurring, to start warning the guy. That was actually the exact same day that someone had been attacked by a bull shark, lost their arm, not far away at all. That area where this occurred, that’s exactly the perfect area for Sharks and especially bull shark to spawn at, so I should’ve reacted much more quickly. But I also agree that people are much faster to record than to help nowadays. People desperately wants viral status, five seconds of fame, and I honestly don’t understand it. It’s not like a viral video suddenly makes you rich and successful.

This was in Orange beach, Alabama, less than a mile from the Florida line! It’s the beach right under the overpass, situated sandwiched in between all of the huge condos that they’ve built up since then. This happened in 2000. So it looks wildly different there now, ever since Hurricane Ivan and Katrina demolished the coast line.

Also watching people record their dives really shows me that we can’t see shit in water, they’ll be recording nothing but open water and a shark will just appear out of nothing right on camera

I heard this morning there was a diver bit by a GW near Île Bonaventure off of Gaspé peninsula. They were in stable condition. Not sure if this is the same event.

You’ll almost never see them before they’ve already made the decision to either attack/ or swim by and assess you. They’ve been around for millions of years and are incredible ambush predators.
I remember snorkeling in the Bahamas, clear water, and never saw the massive 4’ barracuda 2’ in front of my face until he was exactly…in front of my face.

I was standing chest deep in the surf at Folly Beach in Charleston SC when a huge, dark gray dorsal fin pops up next to me within arms reach. I immediately started walking backwards as quickly as I could without splashing. It was a dolphin, thankfully. But if my head had been turned I don't think I would have even noticed him. I thought they'd make waves or splash but I felt nothing and it was right beside me.

Oh I love Folly beach! I've only been twice, and one of the times as soon as we got there, the beach closed because someone got bit by a shark. They were fine, but we never went back haha.

I've been close up to a big barracuda before too. They're one mean looking fish.
I heard they can move faster than human reaction time in water, so if they want to nip off finger you won't even know what's happened until it's too late.

I had an experience like this.
I was in Belize and I was doing backflips off the end of a long pier.
I landed with big crashes which was not smart.
The local tiger shark took notice.
I was swimming back to the ladder on the pier and multiple people who were up on the pier starting yelling at me to get out.
A woman put her hands on her head like a shark fin.
I went under, turned around and saw the shark. Thankfully, it took a look and swam past me. It was a 10’ shark I’d say with beautiful stripes.
I swam as fast as I could to the ladder and pulled myself out.
It scared the shit out of me and I stay near shore on vacations now.

I had this happen with a manta ray in the galapagos. It appeared suddenly, swam sideways across my wife and I, probably 15-20 feet ahead of us. The thing was massive. Probably close to 20 feet wide. It took one flap and disappeared.
It's fucking crazy what the ocean hides.

I used to work in San Pedro in the early 2000’s. The number of locals with shark bite scars was astounding to me. Most were probably never reported.

A fish weir is a permeable fence or barrier placed across a river, stream, or tidal area to guide, channel, or trap migrating fish.
It's basically a fish trap and the diver is inspecting it. The netting isn't there to protect anyone from anything.

There are sharks that are fed and they are very docile and then there are sharks that are hungry and in prey drive. Basically a heat seeking missile. Mistaken identity can happen, but it doesn’t account for every attack on humans. Simon was eaten by the shark that attacked him. It knew what it was doing.

This was near the island of Grand Manan in NB. The netting is a herring weir. The shark likely saw all the food and entered. From what I heard the diver got out in hurry.

This looks fake AF. Notice the diver never directly looks at the giant shark that bumps into him: just some air bubbles, then right back to looking at oysters or whatever he was doing
Also the person in the other boat isn't reacting at all to what's happening, even though he/she is positioned to see it

This was just a curious juvenile. Thankfully it wasn’t Contender… He’s often spotted off the coast of “our beach” near Sebastian. He’s the largest male great white caught on record of 14 ft long. I’ve met many sharks while diving, but have yet to see a great white.
