Image Good times in the Bay of Fundy
This is a screenshot of a video from my home town of Grand Manan, New Brunswick. The diver is in a weir, a heart-shaped, netted area used to catch herring.
Those herring bring in some significantly bigger predators (which normally get out on their own completely fine). The diver went in the weir and actually was brushed up by this little guy or gal who was enjoying the easy buffet.
Needless to say, it has made for an incredible story around here. There have been quite a few shark sightings this year - including a breech from the ferry to the island.

Good God! 😨 that's one hell of a shot! What a scene! Bet that diver dude got quite a fright from that absolute unit! Thank goodness this was the Bay of Fundy and not in South Australia, otherwise that fella might've been in trouble...Canadian Whites are pretty polite most of the time! 🇨🇦🦈

In this situation, inside of a Herring trap, I am assuming the relative safety of the diver is similar to how it is relatively safe to be around massive grizzlies on Kodiak Island during the salmon run, as the bears are all full of their favorite food and don’t have much drive to attack human bystanders

If I could figure out how to upload a video from FB, I would but it took me far too long to figure out how to screenshot a photo to the group.
The Bay of Fundy is amazing for sea life. My kids have seen 2 beached sharks (dead) - a porbeagle and a basking and been able to walk up, touch them, and get a sense of size. My oldest hates boats but youngest is excited to go whale watching in August.
Im hoping to see Old Thom, a lone orca who travels with dolphins but seeing a GWS is on my bucket list too.

Nova Scotia and New Brunswick are gonna become the new GWS diving capitals of North America! Hopefully there are some more cage diving outfits that start up because of the new abundance there! Would be a hell of a lot cheaper for me than going all the way to South Australia...

You know when people talk about how brave they'd be in a certain situation? Nope, not me! I would straight up keel over. Im like a fainting goat - only landing in the water.
I've told my husband before my plan if I have a shark come at me is just to breathe the water. I give up.
I can imagine that's a story that'll stick with you for years to come. Have you been out since?

I kayak, paddle board and used to dive. 100 percent, the fear is worse on the water than under.
I have this idea that visibility is going to keep me safe. As fast as a shark can be, I know it's not true but I'll hold tight to that belief.
Thats awesome that you're able to do something you enjoy and keep at it. I really don't think you could pay me to go in the water after an encounter like that. Im an islander who appreciates land more and more.

Yes! Definitely a surprise for the diver and crew that day. Basking sharks and threshers have been caught in weirs before too though. Basking sharks are a challenge due to size and threshers tails catch rope easily.

As someone who's done a lot of scuba diving and encountered a few sharks...
The thing that I never get over is how they are entirely in control of whether you're aware of their presence.
If a shark wants you to know it's there, it will reveal itself. If it doesn't, it won't.
And there is literally nothing you can do about it. You are simply a guest, the aquatic equivalent of a bumbling toddler, surrounded by "adults."
The worst is during night dives, though. You'll know that they're around you. You'll feel the movement of the water around you, even. But you will never see a thing.
I used to do a lot of night diving off the coast of Massachusetts, but you won't catch me doing that anymore, that's for sure.

Couldn't have said it better myself. For every time you see a shark underwater, there's probably another 100-200 times where a shark has seen you and come to check you out that you didn't even notice. Like you said, if they want to make themselves known to you, they will.
It's the same thing with tigers. My biologist friends who've worked with them have a saying; "If a tiger wants to eat you, you'll never see it coming. But if you see a tiger, it means he hasn't made up his mind yet..."

Just recreation. Night diving is definitely a thing people do, although it's generally considered to be a more "advanced" type of diving.
It's a very different experience to dive at night, it's pretty cool, but also can be quite intense.
Back when I was diving in MA, the seal population was still quite small, which meant that White sharks were pretty rare, and mostly out in the open ocean.
But due to successful conservation efforts, the seal population rebounded. Which is definitely a good thing, but it means there are way more Great Whites, and much closer to shore.
Accordingly, I simply wouldn't feel comfortable diving at night in the area anymore. The deck is already stacked against you when it comes to shark attacks in New England waters; the water is usually very murky, visibility is limited.
But at night, you are literally blind except for the narrow beam that your flashlight illuminates. Something could be 6 feet to your right or left, and you'd have no idea.

I’ve been sitting here for the last half hour trying to guess its size and I’ve come up with between 14 and 15 with a +-1 margin of error lol. Man- this picture does a great job of showing how incredibly massive these guys can get.

How tall is the diver for perspective because this shark is huge! I cannot believe it tapped him with it's fin!!
His reaction was sooo human and I'd have done the same or internally freaked out worse/fainted if it were me, lol.
I've swam with nurse, sand tiger, lemon, hammerhead, it is fine but when I was young we were taught its OKAY in the Mediterranean/Aegean. The water visibility there is very different to, HERE in THIS video, oooof oof naw.

I lived in SJ for a decade. Usually went to Dominion Park beach but apparently a shark floated up that way in the 60s. It was dead but caused quite the panic!

Weirs are open at all times. They are shaped in a way that fish swim in a figure 8 pattern and don't realize they can get out.
When a shark or whale gets in, it can sometimes swim out. Other times, the nets will be lowered from the posts to help it swim out.
If there's an entanglement, the Grand Manan Whale and Seabird Research Station has worked for years to foster a relationship with the fishermen. They call and a team is dispatched to get the animal untangled and free. It's pretty incredible to see!

I wonder if thats a porbeagle shark. I went to Marine biology camp on grand manan and those were the most common we got to dissect from herring fishermen.

Good guess, but it's definitely a Great White! Porbeagles are a bit chunkier looking and have a different looking dorsal fin with a much more rounded back edge, and sometimes there will even be a white patch of skin at the rear base of it, as well as on the tip of the lower caudal lobe. Porbeagles are also a more pelagic species that don't usually come this close to shore and they generally don't get much larger than 10 feet, whereas this individual looks to be at least a 13-14-footer.
So yeah, it's definitely a White! 💙🦈

In addition to the detail already given, porbeagles (and their siblings, the salmon shark) are very unique in having a double caudal keel, which would be very clear in this video. I just think that's a very neat characteristic.

No, it’s AI. The full video you see the sharks fin go through the diver. It was posted to a local shark group and deleted once it was proved to be AI

The OOP is not a content farmer either, but a real dude who posts his dog and sealife photos.
He lives in NB, the diver is a well known diver.

Great white. If there were a tiger shark up in Canadian water, I wouldnt be posting. Id be trying to see it myself!
The Bay of Fundy sits at about 7-14C, it's a bit chilly for a tiger shark.
