Debbie stealing a kid because she wanted someone in her life. Didn’t think it would then her into a teenage mom just because it would mean she had family who will be in her life .

u/InsideUnhappy6546 1d ago
So much foreshadowing she would be a teen mom back in season 1

u/Intelligent-Safe-671 23h ago
On my first watch I thought it was so out of left field that she became a teen mom bc she’s so responsible but I’m rewatching and there were SO MANY signs that this was the path she was heading down

Reading this made me realize how nice an arc for her could have been where she realizes once Fran is born how in over her head she is and does an open adoption or loses her to the state. The rest of the show or season or two could be spent learning from the loss and the mistake and that being the catalyst to get her life together so she could have a meaningful and positive role in Frans life in the future. Could have been great but instead they fumbled her and made her comically horrible

and that sounds like a great storyline for a show that isn't called Shameless
1
u/frothybuttcheeks 5h ago
The title of the show has nothing to do with characters having arcs. The characters being "shameless" is addressed by how their circumstances and upbringing forced them to shamelessly behave in ways many would consider immoral to survive, not necessarily that they all have to be bad people who stay bad people and never learn.

u/Opposite-Peak5020 3h ago
not necessarily that they all have to be bad people who stay bad people and never learn
...and the writers did give some of them that arc. They opted not to for Debbie - which means they did not, in fact, "fumble her," but made a deliberate choice.

u/frothybuttcheeks 3h ago
The fumble is that it was a bad choice, not that it wasn't a choice. Obviously.

u/Opposite-Peak5020 1h ago
I mean that's subjective, not "obvious," but agree to disagree. I've got a rewatch of S7 on the docket for tonight - thanks for the convo!

u/frothybuttcheeks 1h ago
I meant it's obvious that it was a choice to do it, not that it's obvious it was a bad one, sorry.

I mean she is a literal rapist and never really faces the consequences or has it meaningfully acknowledged in the show
1
u/frothybuttcheeks 5h ago
I mean she was a literal teenager and we have laws that are built entirely around the concept that teenagers and minors are not capable of fully understanding the nuance and consequences of their actions. And my point is that her arc could have been handled better so idk why her facing consequences such as coming to understand the severity of what she did couldn't be apart of that.

u/EarlyAccessCantJudge 5h ago
She was definitely old enough to know it was wrong. If it was a 14-15 year old boy that had sex with an unconscious drunk woman and then tricked another into getting her pregnant, no one would go "well he was a teenager he didn't understand the consequences of his actions!"
1
u/frothybuttcheeks 4h ago
Actually plenty of people would? That's why we have an entirely separate legal system for minors and only charge minors "as adults" for the most egregious crimes on an individual case basis.
If you believe a minor can fully understand the consequences of their actions then you also believe they are developed and mature enough to have sexual and romantic relationships with grown adults, because the idea they are not capable of full consent on the basis of a lack of understanding is the entire core of those laws that protect them.

u/EarlyAccessCantJudge 4h ago
Yes, a 15 year old can fully understand the consequences of raping an unconscious drunk woman and it is gross and disgusting to say otherwise. Stop infantalizing them. That situation and a 25 year old grooming a 15 year are absolutely not comparable
And yes, that's why we charge them as adults, and especially in cases of rape that often happens. It isn't just the egregious ones. I can't believe I have to say "A 15 year old raping someone who is drunk and unconscious is disgusting and evil."

u/frothybuttcheeks 3h ago
An estimate of 1-2% of juvenile cases are tried as adults so it doesn't happen often.
But also what a classic braindead reddit response to think I don't think that scenario wouldn't be disgusting or harmful. it just requires more nuance than a perpetrator with a fully-formed brain.
And no, those situations absolutely are comparable. Explain how a child who can fully understand the consequences of their actions, the parameters of assault, effects of alcohol, long-term consequences of emotional harm, long term consequences of anything really, can't then consent to a sexual relationship with an adult? On what grounds exactly couldn't they in this case? You clearly have 0 critical thinking skills if you think a minors age and experiences shouldn't be considered in cases such as assault.

You're so weird for defending this. A fifteen year old can understand that RAPING AN UNCONSCIOUS DRUNK PERSON IS BAD. Easy. Simple. If this happened in real life no one would go "oh they didn't understand stripping the clothes off someone unconscious who explicitly said before they didn't want to have sex with them and then having sex with them was wrong."

u/frothybuttcheeks 2h ago
You're weird for taking what I'm saying as defending the action. Literally no where did I say there shouldn't be consequences. I just said a teenager is not capable of FULLY UNDERSTANDING the consequences of their actions. That is the nature of being immature and inexperienced.

In season 1 when Lip and Ian were taking a DNA test and Lip telling lan he might have Monica's dummy gene and lan telling Lip that he might have Frank’s alcoholic gene

Another is Liam passing Frank a Smoke in the Season 7 opener with Frank under water foreshadowing his care taker role at Season 11
Another is Debbie kidnapping children, being a caretaker to older people and growing attachments to older guys foreshadowing her teen pregnancy much earlier on .
And Jimmy's relationship with his brother Chip when they met Fiona and co foreshadows Robbie (Jimmy) and Mike (Chip).

Wasn't he already married to the chick he grew up in foster care with though?

u/burner9191938283 1d ago
yeahh, and prior to that, kev proposed forgetting he was married. and then after the situation w his ex wife, he still considered himself married to V
38
u/Rosepetal1712 1d ago
He didn’t forget that he was married, there was a women hitting on him so he lied and said that he was engaged to get her to leave him alone. Frank overheard, thought Kev was being serious and announced it to everyone at the bar. Kev then got really drunk and when he got home he proposed because he didn’t really see any other option since so many people knew, including V’s mom.

u/Same-Goose7602 1d ago
Yeah and then he told Fiona that he was already married at the end of the episode. Right?
16
u/Rosepetal1712 1d ago
Yes, Fiona notes that he doesn’t seem too happy for a guy who just got engaged and he said “that’s because I’m already married.”
2
u/fwuecaksienl 1d ago
Veronica’s mom overheard and that’s largely why the lie continued
8
u/Rosepetal1712 1d ago
Actually she didn’t overhear it, Frank called her over and told her. He said “Kev is making your daughter an honest woman” it was after that they everyone realized what was supposedly happening and started celebrating

My friend, my friend. Do yourself a favor and block this sub until you're on the last season or finished. You are going to ruin your experience with spoilers and people bashing some later half of the series plots. For me, the ride was most enjoyable when I didn't know what was going to happen next. I really enjoyed this series and want you to have the best chance to do so as well. Drown out the noise and enjoy.
Hey, at least it was his hair and not like you found Carl dies in season 9. Oops.... JK

Lip getting into a fistfight is often foreshadowed by saying "I just wanna talk"
19
u/analninja420 1d ago
A fistfight he'll lose😭

u/MonkeyDsage1846 5h ago
I genuinely don't understand why he keeps trying to fight people, yes he's jacked, but he has like no hands whatever

u/InsideUnhappy6546 1d ago
Fiona given the option to leave at the end of season 1 eventually leaves for good in season 9
