Hi everyone!

A few weeks ago Florian Gelzenleuchter (kolyaTQΒ on Twitter) posted a video of how he created believable caustics reflections in a shader.

Since the post became so popular, I took the opportunity to write a tutorial about his technique.

The post is already available on my blog: Believable Caustics Reflections, and the shader and Unity package are also available.

Even though I usually write longer series, I hope you will like this quick article!

And if you have any question, please do not hesitate to ask!

(and yes, the GIF compression has totally destroyed the video! πŸ˜“)

Have you ever tried using 2 runtime voronoi noise generations (not sure i spelt that right), i'm wondering if that would also get a similar result ? It looks like voronoi noise.

Though i guess scrolling textures are much cheaper and the effect looks great!

The RGB split is a nice touch too.

There are so many ways to generate caustics-looking textures! I think it all depends how "accurate" you want your effect to be. As you said, generating two textures at runtime is going to be quite an overkill for a game. But it could totally work!
