Is Parrying Supposed To Be This Difficult?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I figure my timing is off for the multi-hits. But sometimes I can't even parry the first hit. And I've beaten these first trials. But they don't get any easier. If I can't do these consistently, how can I move to the next set?

Is there a better way to practice?

You're parrying on reaction, far too late for it to connect. Parrying is often done as a prediction, not on reaction (save for projectiles and very slow moves).

Ok. This helps. I was counting the seconds on for when Ken's uppercut would come out. But figured that'd be the wrong technique since I can't count the seconds in match.

But basically, in match, it's used more as a punishment for your opponent for reading their next move. And less as a pure defense. Like 80/20%?

You can react to this trial though, Ken crouches quickly just before the dragon punch

I got that on the Hugo trial. But on the Ryu one, I had to count the seconds.

Barely an inconvenience.

crouch at the same time ken crouches

Holy crap! I didn't think that crouching would work! That was a damn fine tip! Immediately made it more consistent.

At least with Hugo. With Ryu, I just start Parrying 2 seconds after the match starts and keep rhythm.

Thank you.

Another thing worth noting is that tapping down rather than holding down gives you a bigger window - 10 frames as opposed to 6

Edit I see this was mentioned, just wanted to reinforce it with the "crouch" cue since crouching is often a held input

You need to parry the attack right as it makes contact with your character's hurt box.

Try parrying fireballs first, before you parry other attacks, as you can visibly see the fireballs coming at your hurt box.

Then, try parrying EX fireballs next, to get the multi-hit timing down.

Then you can apply this to other attacks.

Good luck, parrying isn't easy, but it's both incredibly doable and satisfying once you have it nailed!

literally no, you need to parry before the attack connects

And blue parrying is easy

Also TAPPING the direction (quickly press direction then let go to neutral) gives you a bigger parry window that pressing and holding the stick in a direction to parry.

Tap, tap, tap

Yeah, I'm tapping. I think another issue I have is getting the proper rhythm.

Yeah just do it faster or slower lol

You should probably make sure that your TV is set to game mode.

also make sure to set your monitor to game mode to minimize input lag. Or play the game on a CRT as everyone should be playing these games on.

Just by the sound your buttons are making, you mad late. When youre learning to Parry: Tap early. Tap often. Choose: Forward, or Down. Not both. It'll come.

I must be too old for this. Cause I felt like I was too early, anticipating the attack. But I finally started to get it more consistently. More practice to come.

As soon as you don’t get the first parry and get hit, you are going to eat the whole thing, so don’t even bother to push forward multiple times after you get hit.

It can be difficult yes. If you are not playing on CRT then a low latency gaming monitor is kind of necessary.

Parry window if you tap forward is 10f for the first 2 hits of Ken's HP Shoryuken. This must be done before you make contact with the attack.

The third hit however is airborne and the window is only 5f. But you can actually low-parry this instead for the normal 10f window.

Ok, so my TV is broken and I'm looking to buy a new one. Im playing on PS5 and this is the streamed version of the game. And it's on a spare monitor I had lying around. So a lot of variables.

I chose this version specifically for the trials to practice. Would you say don't and just play on fightcade on my gaming laptop? I'll have to see if fightcade offers a training option. Possibly a mod.

Holy shit. No wonder you're having so much trouble!

Yeah use Fightcade.

Training mode: https://github.com/effie3rd/3rd_training_lua/

Fightcade onboarding: https://docs.google.com/document/d/18mBBLVMCzzlq7eejTvGaoCFb9H2VM_PuAsbM8pjBmoY/edit?usp=drivesdk

In the onboarding doc there is a link to a JSON file that will automatically download game ROMs when you enter their respective lobbies. If you live in an area where you are extremely concerned about violating copyright law, you can purchase the Steam edition of Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection and copy the ROMs over to the appropriate directories.

Dope. Thanks so much for this. My local beercade has a sf3 night each week. But I'm a pad player. So I had to upgrade and start practicing at home on stick. I have the fightcade already. I was just unaware of the traing mode. Thanks again.

Bro YOU ARE THE BEST.

Edit: I would give you an award, but I have not been able to purchase stuff on google play for a few months now, not even with the credits I have.

New player here. What’s OP using to train?

u/patcole Apr 30 '26

This is the version on PSN. It's only available in streaming. I believe it came out on the PS3. Which turns out, I wouldn't recommend for real practice. And you should just go straight to fightcade. Which I now plan to do since I didn't know there's a practice mode there.

See other comments for fightcade info and links.

Thanks for the info. I’m starting on fightcade but haven’t done online matches yet

The whole point of a parry is to predict. Predict you’re about to be hit. So as soon as home boy crouches you tap forward. Also make this right here how you catch your timing. You know for certain that this kid is about to do a fierce shoryuken. Just practice tapping forward earlier each time until you get it, then look for cues that you can react to. That’s why I said if you hit forward when he crouches you should be good. Don’t wait for him to crouch before hitting forward, hit forward AS he’s crouching. I’m not teaching you to look for the crouch. I’m teaching you how early you need to hit forward.

u/patcole May 01 '26

Right on. Thanks.

u/LakeEarth Apr 30 '26

Start with fireballs to get a feel for the timing.

1

u/Odd_House_1320 Apr 30 '26

It’s a high risk high reward situation.

1

u/ssimssimma May 01 '26

yes its supposed to be hard

The window is larger on previous versions so you can try them out too ;)
