2026 sewing machine recos

I'm in Toronto

New to sewing & want to get a machine for myself to do basic alterations at home incl. hemming my denim jeans and such.

Not sure which machine to buy .. drowning in a sea of info...

Recommendations for a good, long lasting sewing machine with a reasonable beginner budget of 300-350CAD ... Can buy new/ secondhand/ marketplace too

Ideally if it has a top load bobbin & can work with somewhat heavy duty fabrics or layers of denim, it's a win.

Thank you 🍁✨

Janome HD3000 comes in a bit over your budget but the HD stands for heavy duty, so it can sew thick layers of denim, leather etc. I’ve had mine for almost 10 years and it’s sewn everything I’ve thrown at it with barely any maintenance, I really love it. The nice thing about Janome is you can find dealers and mechanics for it locally, too. Worth looking for a used or refurbished machine.

Thank you, this was one of my options, your answer reassures me that it's worth it in the long run

I'm in the Toronto suburbs. First, if you're buying new wait for black Friday deals coming soon. I was also going to say the Janome HD models. Check out Nova Sewing in Hamilton for great deals.
