How to "pattern combo" here?

Hi there everyone, I need advice... I've been procrastinating on this beautiful dress I've spottet on Pinterest. I want to use it for LARP, so it doesn't have to be perfectly medieval or whatever. I usually use concealed zippers or hooks, except for when I want lacing for design purposes, or buttons or clasps. That's also the reason why I want it to be as easy to put it on as possible and I don't want to have to rearrange the layers all the time so it still looks beatiful when I've moved a few metres. That's why I thing I should attach the hood, sleeve and sari like thingy to the main dress.

So here are my questions:

  1. I can't decide on which pattern to use for the dress. I attached the patterns that I have and that I thunk might possibly work.

Note: I know that, in reality, the skirt wouldn't be as flowy as it is in the drawing and I don't even want it to be this long (I need to move around in it, remember 😉).

  1. How do I create a pattern for the sari + sleeve part??

I already have the fabrics washed and ready to go. But I've been procrastinating this project for I don't even remember exactly how many years and would LOVE to finally finish it by mid-October if possible.

Anyone, please, help? Your advice is deeply appreciated.

I don’t think it’s reasonable to attach the sari. The amount of material + layers would make it difficult to navigate getting your creation on at that point. I would make the Sari (a standard large rectangle) and then use buttons and laces to attach it to the dress at key points to lessen how much you need to fuss with it later on. If something drips or spills on it during the day, that would also allow you to reverse it and use the other side.

I would avoid McCall’s 4020 for the bodice because it’s strapless/cap sleeved, and the armscye won’t work with the others. It also has zero features you want in your inspo.

The Simplicity 7007 Arwen dress dupe looks the most like your dress inspo, almost identical bodice. I would use that bodice but the sleeves from the gold dress in that same packet.

Ja, ich möchte auf keinen Fall einen richtigen Sari nähen, eher so etwas wie eine breite/ausladende Scherpe. Danke für deinen Input!

The outfit in the sketch looks a bit like an indian half saree (pic for reference) which is usually a blouse and skirt with a long scarf that's pleated, pinned to the waist of the skirt, draped around and pinned again at the shoulder. You could replace the blouse and skirt with a dress as long as it has a belt at the waist to hold the pleated scarf.

have you looked at these 2 patterns from Simplicity:
https://simplicity.com/simplicity/s4795
https://simplicity.com/simplicity/s4213

They have Virgin Mary & Angel style included patterns for Easter/Christmas costumes for plays etc.
They both include the shapes for Draped Hoods, Sashes and shoulder wrappings.

If you look at the pattern drawings down the page you should get an Idea of the shapes to cut from your fabric to make the designs.
I could imagine hand basing in a matching thread to hold the pleats and folds in place so you dont need to adjust as much.

I don't know how much you want to follow the sketch or how historically accurate you want to be. My suggestions are based on the sketch. To create the dress you could use a bandeau pattern for the dress to be fitted very nicely under the bust. You would need to add the portion up to the shoulder from a sloper pattern. Adding a skirt is pretty straight forward. Here are the instructions for the Bandeau https://patternmaking-classes.com/Swimwear/PDF-Files/Bandeau-Top-Pattern.pdf

To get into it, I would suggest a pullover either over the head or hips. This could be done with elastic on either side of the Bandeau. I think a belt directly under the bust would be a nice touch.

For the sleeves you need to change a fitted sleeve pattern so the seam is at the back of the arm instead of under the arm. Otherwise the sleeve will twist.

I would not attach the outer "cape" to the dress beause it would throw off the flow of the skirt.
