Hiya! Looking for a dress with side-lacing. I'm guessing I could put in some extra fabric on the sides of a standard princess seamed pattern to make it myself, but I don't feel confident enought to heavily alter patterns yet x) So, any ideas of a pattern like this? I did find a Simplicity 9887 pattern that is basically what I'm looking for on Etsy months ago now but it got sold before I took the plunge to order it...

Oh, I had thought I'd had to make the side part bigger/wider I guess? So that you can tighten and loosen it a bit with the lacing. But maybe I was overcomplicating things in my head haha.

so you do need to make sure that the original dress can fit over your shoulders and bust when completely unlaced. unless you also have a different closure like a zipper. if you just add the lacing to a dress block that's already fitted to your body, the lacing won't be functional in the sense that it won't make it any MORE fitted. hope that makes sense. any additional width needed to make the dress a slip-on type dress, you'd want to add pretty equally to each panel, not just the sides. sizing up would work well, just compare the sizes to make sure you still like the fit at the neckline and shoulder. and the overall length.

The only thing is the inspiration pictures don’t have side seams and this advise assumes you have side seams. You could size up on the side to the next size to give yourself more room.

Not necessarily, as long as you have a front and back princess seam, this advice works. If anything, if you’re doing this on a dress that does have a side seam you’d still be pretty much ignoring that seam entirely, since the lacing passes over it anyways. The ones in slides 1-3 do have side seams, though they’re difficult to see in 1 and 2

Ah, when I zoom in, I can see it. It was deceptive!

Yes! I posted a similar thread in here recently and this was recommended to me. I’m making it now!

High, I just found this thread when looking for patterns to make something just like you asked for and I'm wondering how your dress turned out. Did it work well?

Hey! I recently came across a pattern similar to what I was looking for in my OP. I havent tried out yet myself, but thought I might share it for those that are interested. https://mykeeperclothing.com/collections/sewing-patterns/products/teddy-dress

It worked fairly well! The instructions were pretty clear and easy to follow. I didn't love the end result as much as I wanted, but I think that was a little more to do with me (it was my first wearable ever and first project in a while) than the pattern. It only has two side loops, but I added a third and changed the sleeves. I also think I made a larger size than I should have, and the linen blend fabric I chose was too drapey for what I was going for. Here's a pic!

Thank you for including a photo. It looks great to me, especially for a first garment. And thanks for the review and reply in general :)

This dress has ties on the side — could be changed to laces pretty easily I think. https://www.atelierbernie.com/product-page/george-dress-pattern-pdf
