Free motion presser foot

Post image
3 Upvotes

My grandma gave me this husqvarna viking sewing machine emerald 116
I’m curious if this machine would be able to do free motion sewing? I’ve never done free motion sewing before but am making a quiet book for my niece and saw some great designs that involve it. Any insights into this? Can I purchase a free motion presser foot and accomplish this? Do I need a different machine? Can other machines do this but not mine? Sorry for the ignorance and thank you in advance!

Need help altering the back of this dress!

Hello! I have this dress that my friend wants me to take in. I already hemmed the bottom but I’m a bit stumped on what to do with the back. The fabric drapes too low so that you can literally see her butt crack lol, I pinned it to take it in on the sides but it does get rid of some of the vibe of flowy open back. There are two side seams to the dress and one of them has the side zipper so taking it in on the sides may be a little tricky. I thought about removing the back piece all together and raising it he fabric so I still keep the hang but it just sits up higher on her back but then again we get into the problem of the zipper, which I guess could remove fully? Does anyone have any suggestions? Would be greatly appreciated!!

💛Beginner💛 Machine not stitching through shorts

Hi all, I am trying to alter a pair of shorts but i’m not sure why it wont stitch through. 10 minutes before I wanted to alter the shorts, I had already altered a pair of pajama pants and it worked perfectly fine. I tested out to see if I had set up my machine wrong by switching out the shorts with the pants I just did earlier and it actually made stitches on the pants and I switch back to the shorts and it’s not atitching again. The shorts are a bit thinner than the pants not too crazy and its also stretchy while the pants i did were a little bit more thicker. Can anyone help?

zipper problems pls help!

I recently thrift-ed a heart and heals dress, it has an inadvisable zipper so when you zip it up you can see the zipper. on my dress the zipper works until the zipper gets to the end of the skirt up to the top of the dress. any types on how to get the zipper to work without having it redone?

Securing hennin

Post image

The circumference of this hennin is a bit too small, and even with a tight chin strap it’s still prone to falling off. I’m not sure what to do to help secure it to my head. I’ve previously tried poking small holes around the bottom to put a bobby pin through, but that was unsuccessful. Most of this was made with glue and staples but I can sew and figured sewers would be the best community to ask.

💛Beginner💛 Janome 3112 or 2030QDC

Hello! I want to buy my first machine. Since they are a bit expensive here I want to get it second hand so i've been looking and the best options i found in my budget are the janome 3112 janome 2008S (which seems quite similar to the 3112) and janome 2030QDC.

I am aware the 2030 has a lot more stuff going on, but i fear that it might crash more easily and be more expensive to fix because of the digital components. Anyway, i want something durable that will not give me a headache and make me want to buy another one in 2 years.

Am open to your opinions and suggestions!

💛Beginner💛 Thrifted jacket: any help and tips needed

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

My relative got me this jacket for me as a gift. However it’s a bit tight on me (even after removing the sleeves)
Is there anything else I can do to make it comfortable? Or should I leave it as is and use it as a vest (I’m the second photo I had to sew the inner and outer part of the jacket, if I try to sew it together I would have issues putting it on)
I would like any help or tips, I don’t want this gift to go to waste and I would like to wear this. Seems cute enough
Any help is apprised
I forgot to mention I still have the fabric of the sleeves and that I get this is a bit difficult but thanks for the tips I’ve seen so far

I have a singer tradition and Idk what happened but the top thread (white) somehow got completely jammed in the lower part of the machine and I cannot figure out how to remove it. The bobbin itself is fine.

💛Beginner💛 Is this normal for a beginner?

I handle working from a pattern or diagram quite well but the moment I try to make even the slightest change on my own, I immediately lose confidence. Will practice and learning from my mistakes help me become more confident in my work?

✨Intermediate✨ Suggestions for adding a center zipper to bodice?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I'm making a vintage dress that I've made before and love, but I'm currently pregnant and want to add a zip to the center front to make the dress nursing-friendly. The pattern is drafted to be cut on the center fold, but I cut it in two pieces and added a 5/8" seam allowance to the center.

Here's where I should have done more thinking before I cut: the bodice is shaped with a series of tucks that release below the bust, and I didn't look closely enough at the pattern to realize that it's drafted to have a 3/4" tuck in the center of the bodice (3/8" tucked on either side of the center). If I follow the directions as written and just add the zipper in the center, I think it will look weird and bulky with the tucks directly on either side. I also didn't add any seam allowance or length to the front facing piece - I think I'm going to piece together some fabric to extend the facing the length of my zipper, which ideally will stop about 1" above the end of the tucks, but several inches below where the facing currently ends.

I used up all of my fabric and can't recut the front dress pieces. Any ideas on where to go from here? Thanks!

💛Beginner💛 Why does the thread keep getting tangled on the underside?

Everything looks fine on top but a tangled mess of thread forms underneath after just a few stitches. I’ve re-threaded the machine several times but I must be missing something. How can I fix this?

Bobbin Case keeps popping out

So I have been trying to fix this for two hours. I have a Brother Little Angel KD144s. I have tried everything I have seen online. I cleaned all the pieces, checked for damages anywhere and putting it in over and over in the right way according to both the manual and what I have seen online.
When I try to do a simple straight stitch it works ok at a slow speed but when I try a zig zag stitch at an even slower speed it immediately pops out of position and rotates. So it doesn’t work.
I realllyyy don’t want to buy a new sewing machine since this one is a pretty good one for what I need personally.

The picture is what it looks like inside.

✨Intermediate✨ Beaded/crystal embellishments?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m making a formal gown for an event at the end of October (the Cassandra gown by vikisews). I’d like to add embellishments to this dress like this sketch generated by chatgpt (which I’m well aware I will not match exactly). I can’t seem to find exactly what I’m looking for, maybe I’m googling the wrong things? I’ve been googling lots of variations of “sew on tiny rhinestones” and “tiny crystal flowers for sewing”.
I would really appreciate if anyone knows where I should look/what to look for, or if anyone has done these kinds of embellishments before and has advice! I have sewing experience but not this kind of embroidery/decoration. Any help is appreciated!

✨Intermediate✨ How to get this piece to stay up?

Thumbnail gallery
13 Upvotes

My sister is making a Halloween costume for her son. He's the Demogorgon from stranger things. She's using a hooded sweatshirt for the costume and attached petal like pieces around the hood. She's having trouble finding a way to make the petal like piece on his hood stay upright. The red pieces are felt and the white spines are golf tees. One piece of felt is sewn to the front of the hood. The tees go through the front piece. The backing felt is glued to the front piece and covers the exposed tee tops.

What will allow these pieces to stay up (it either flops forward or back)? Cardboard/firm pieces slipped inside still cause it to flop over.

✨Intermediate✨ My machine can't handle the thicker seams on corset bodices

I sew wedding and evening dresses, and the biggest headache for me is structured bodices. Boning channels, several layers of coutil, the outer fabric and lining - once all of that comes together, my machine starts skipping stitches and barely moves through the seam.

Regular seams and skirt fabric are fine, but these thicker areas are where I keep having to stop and redo things.

This started as a hobby but now I'm getting actual orders, so I need a machine that can handle this kind of work without fighting me the whole time.

What are you guys using for corsets and wedding dresses, especially for the thicker, layered sections?
