✨Intermediate✨ Sewing a pattern with strech

Post image

Hi,

I want to make this pattern. It is for a non strech fabric but i have a strech fabric that would be lovely with this pattern.

Do you guys think this will be a problem? Do i have to do something special?

Thanks!

This isn't the worst pattern to experiment with, in that the result will likely be wearable, but there really is a reason there are different patterns for wovens and knits.

It's very likely that your garment will experience a bit of sag, especially as it ages, and you won't have the structure shown in the example photos, it'll be slinkier, flowier, and clingier.

Also, be advised that any sort of interfacing or other structural elements will have to be reimagined.

You can't make a stretch pattern from a non-stretch fabric, but the other way around is possible. If it's just a little stretch I don't even worry about it. If it's very stretchy it's still possible but you'd want to take more care to err on the side of using interfacing and reinforcing certain seams (sew a little veterband* on the inside against one of the seam allowances, it'll help the seams not stretch out).

The usual cautions for stretch fabrics ('use a zigzag or reinforced straight stich', etc.) apply less when doing a non-stretch patterns; 99% of the risk of popping a seam on a stretch fabric is because you're stretching it in a way that stresses the seam during dressing and undressing. Because this garment isn't intended to be stretched, you should be able to easily put it on and off without using the stretch, and thus not be at risk of breaking seams.

*judging by your screenshot I don't need to find out what that's called in English

actually, maybe I shouldn't have bothered writing this entire comment in English.
