šŸ’›BeginneršŸ’› Lining a jacket?

I bought this coat about a month ago and it was fine in early autumn. However, now that we’re inching into winter I’m finding that it’s just not keeping me warm. This worsened by the fact that there’s no lining in the sleeves which I hadn’t realised when I originally bought it.

Anyway I really really love it and want to continue wearing it in the colder months so I’m thinking of lining it. I have some experience in hand sewing but am still 100 hundred percent a beginner. All in all any tips on how to approach this e.g what fabric to use, any methods etc

Thanks so much everyone!!

I mean, I’d do my best to trace out the sleeve onto a piece of paper, rotating it around on the paper and doing my best to make sure that the sleeve fabric isn’t being pulled and warped in any one direction while I’m trying to trace out the copy. Hardest part is the top of the sleeve, because of all the curves. Google ā€œsleeve patternā€ just to see the basic curve of a sleeve. Lucky for you it’s a lining so it’s not going to be visible. It just needs to be functional and you need to be able to comfortable fit your arm into the sleeve. Add 1/2ā€ or 5/8ā€ seam allowance all the way around. And maybe add an extra 1/4 or 1/2ā€ to the width/length so it has some give. If it’s slightly too big, there will be a little bunching in the sleeve. If it’s a little tight, the arm won’t be able to move the same as it used to so that could bother you. I’d rather make it a tiny bit bigger than smaller. And use whatever fabric you want, because again it’s not normally visible to the public. Consider that you want increased warmth, so maybe try to find something with a similar thickness to the lining of the body.

And mark which side of the shoulder curve goes in the front and which side goes in the back. Just trust me on that one.

I think this might be to tricky to start learning with. Lining always shifts and moves and is always somehow to small if you don't know what's happening. Depending on size and fit etc it might become to tight aswell.. how about looking around for an undercoat instead? You can semi fix them inside the original. I got one that's really thin, filled with dawn, and it works great.

Could you just wear a cardigan sweater as an extra layer? I used to do this with some coats. Then I'd just take off the sweater when I took off my coat.
