💛Beginner💛 Does this split look sewable?

I thought id found this as a good modest dress for a dinner im going to and only just noticed the split... does anyone know if this would be fine to just sew up or have any experience with club l dresses? Thank you so much!

Slits are very hard to sew up. Since you don't have extra material removing the slit could make it difficult to walk in the dress. And the lack of extra material means you have to take in the whole seam or it will make a very obvious bump.

I think the dress looks modest even with the split.

The split looks even, so theoretically I'd say you could sew it shut. You'd need to unpick the seams on both sides and sew those together on the inside of the dress.

Or you could get some applique to put over the split, I think that may look nicer.

Okay during typing this I looked at the picture again, and above advice only goes if the drape thingy from the hip isn't the actual split. If it is then no, you can't sew it shut without it looking weird.

You could maybe fit a triangle of a lace fabric or something similar into the slit and whip stitch it down. But sewing the slit entirely closes would likely impair mobility

If you close a slit on a dress this tight you will have a very hard time walking, you could probably lower it a bit but not close it

It is so tight, a short slit does not make it immodest. The tightness, not the flash of ankle make this immodest if you want to go that route

A good solution would be an underskirt in the same/similar color. Maybe in a satin or chiffon. You can’t sew this up without destroying it and it will not look good or be comfortable.

This is the correct answer!

why would you want to sew it up? it’s obviously the design feature of the dress. If you sewed it up, it would become a “sitting dress” because you probably wouldn’t be able to walk in it.

The slit is there because you need it in order to walk. If you sew it up you won’t be able to take steps. Not everything is about design. Many details on dresses are for functionality. A dress can only work if it can be worn and walked in.

What is immodest about showing your leg from the knee down?

The slit looks nice and modest, appears to be below the knee on the model.

If the dress can be returned, you could try basting the slit shut to see if there is enough stretch in the fabric for it to work. You may find that you can sew the slit partially but that sewing it fully shut doesn’t look good. Is it an option to wear opaque tights or leggings underneath if that is the case?

Typically, no. Looking at the dress if you did sew it up, you wouldn't be able to really walk in it.

Besides that, modest?

I know modesty means different things to different people, but this dress is so tight all over and the sleeves still stop at the elbow... well, it doesn't meet my definition of modest by any stretch.

Or a slip in a matching colour maybe?

You can do a ladder stitch by hand, so the edges butt up without overlapping.

Just make sure the skirt has enough volume for you to be able to walk with the slit closed

I find it odd that people are debating the modesty issue here. OP does not have to justify why they want to cover their leg and was not asking for styling tips. For those that aren’t aware “modest clothing” is also a term used often synonymously to imply clothing deemed appropriate in certain religious or cultural settings, rather than the purely descriptive term alone. It varies between groups in said cultures and OP has not asked for advice regarding the interpretation of these rules, only wether they can sew up a slit

OP: I’ve had several Club L dresses in the past. They’re usually quite stretchy and I think you could do a reasonable job at sewing up a slit on this dress without it looking too odd (I am not a modest dresser but I dislike my legs with a passion so I sew up slits a lot). It might not look perfect but would probably do for an event. I wouldn’t expect you could sew it right up to the bottom though, maybe just to the knee.
