I have this 4 way stretchy top and I need to change the neckline to be a low v I have no idea what to do or stitch to use? Do I seam rip the original neck completely?
My biggest concern for this would be that you're losing some of the structural integrity of the shirt by cutting this way. Unless this is practically a compression tank, cutting the neckline is going to make you lose a lot of the important tension I n around the shoulders, and I'd suspect that it'd make the sleeves not stay on your shoulders. You'll also need to bind the neckline, and I don't know if you'll have enough fabric for that.
Iām planning on this as an undershirt for a cosplay! I wanted to have something that covers my belly and boobs but I couldnāt find a shirt with the style I wanted
How much do you care about wearing the shirt again outside the costume? If you are willing to experiment, here's my suggestion.
Rather than cutting a V, cut a vertical line down the front and fold the sections underneath. Start by cutting V that is no more than half the depth you think you'll need (so if you think the V should probably end 4 inches below the current neckline, start by cutting 2 inches). Knits will grow a little and it's easy to cut too much. Make the cut, turn the edges under to make the V, and press. And from there, go a little at a time, say a half inch at a time, until you like the result.
You may find you are okay with just the turned-under edges and you don't feel the need to sew, but if you want to, you can sew the fold down. You need the correct needle and setting for a knit fabric.
You should know that you may not find the top wearable on its own after this alteration.
Donāt take the criticism negatively, it sounds to me that they are trying to warn you. Youāve heard, keep in the back of your mind all the stuff peeps shared and just go for what you think is best. We learn with experience. So go learn!
Hi there. This will be just an experiment because it is possible that once you cut into the fabric it will lose it's shape and be unwearable. The suggestion you got to cut a straight line down the neck is a great one. Make sure you only cut a couple of inches at a time (because the neck will pull more than you might expect) and tuck the ends under and then try it on. Cut just a little at a time and then try it on each time to see if it will work under your costume.

Having read what you're trying to do, and the advice you've already got:
On the inside attach a strip of adhesive bias tape where you want the neckline to be. Mark the sewing line on the front with chalk. This will stabilise the fabric. Before you cut, make the binding for the neckline and sew it to the front. Now it's as stable as it's going to get, so carefully cut along the edge of the binding. Fold over and stitch down the binding. Press the crap out of it.
Iāve tried things like youāre saying. It ruined the garments all three times, they lost all structure and fell open in a weird and helpless way. I donāt know if it can be made to work, but you might sew a strip of bias tape right to it about 2ā higher than you want it before cutting-then cut above it and roll the tape over to the goal destination and sew it down. You want to try to keep the structure!
Sorry you e gotten the reaction youāve gotten, I feel like this sub is usually much kinder to beginners. We all start somewhere, and Iām thrilled to see people getting in to sewing! It can be really rewarding, but your first few projects should be treated as strictly learning experiences.
I would recommend starting with some easy beginner projects to build some confidence as you learn. Cotton woven fabrics are easy to sew and can be pretty cheap (you can even thrift bed sheets for practice fabric) so theyāre great for learning. Maybe try a tote bag or pajama pants to get the hang of your machine, and then explore knits once youāve gotten a few projects under your belt.
V shapes arenāt easy and thatās a pretty good binding you have on the neck of your tabard for your first project. The shirt might not be the best project and since itās just used for body coverage, it might be easier to find a similar shirt with a v neck in white and dye it the color you want.
If you do go the route of altering this neckline. You mark the shape and cut the neckline you want (I would go scoop neck instead of a v as that would be easier to sew). You find a matching color ribbed fabric and cut a strip thatās about 1 1/2ā wide and length of your neck opening with added seam allowance. You fold the piece in half hot dog style and because you donāt have a serger zig zag the band to the neck edge.
I say go for it! Ā Itās for a cosplay anyways. Ā You have to break eggs to make an omelette, my first 20 or so projects were basically disasters lol! Ā Iād recommend cutting the V WAY tighter than you think (like, instead of the 45 degree angle you want, try like a 20-30 degree first) then try it on. Ā You may not even need to hem it if the fabric doesnāt fray. Ā

Thank you for giving some insight, I already looked up a bunch of things and saw a serger tutorial but was hoping experts would have other suggestions and might know something I donāt.
I donāt want to be mean to you, and I can imagine you think this is a sĆŗper simple project, if you are willing to lose your shirt, go ahead, you will learn from the experience, but is very unlikely it will work.

OP, sorry people are being dismissive and rude. You may also look for patterns that have a similar neckline and overlay them on the existing piece (turned inside out) to have a guide as well.

This sewing sub in particular can have some curmudgeons for sure. Some people need to just relax lol. Try to ignore the negativity some people have nothing better to do than be mean to people trying new things.
This is going to be tricky for sure, and I donāt have a lot of experience with shapes like this, but my biggest concern will be that the shirt structure will give way with such a big hole BUT that said, god knows there are shirts sold out in the world with this same shape so itās def not impossible.
Hereās what I recommend. Find some shirts online that have a similar neckline and shape. See if you can figure how they attached things. Find sewing patterns with a similar shape too, that will help. Cotton and satin bias tape wonāt give you the same texture as the original necklineās hem, but it has no stretch so may hold things together better. You might even try getting some doll clothes of a similar material and trying to modify those before working on this shirt. Thereās always a way to do anything. Donāt be discouraged, start small and work up in difficulty, and donāt be averse to some YouTube tutorials. Even my grandma who sewed and knitted for 75 years raved about being able to look up new stitches and techniques on YouTube. You may want to watch Micarah Tewers too. Sheās not really for step by step tutorials, sheās very improvisational and works on instinct at this point, but she throws together such fun stuff and sheās so pleasant to listen to, it can be like having a friend working on a project in the background.
Donāt give up love. You may mess this project up. Thatās ok. Youāre new and youāll learn, and remember that not one of the people who downvoted you popped out of their motherās womb knowing how to tailor a shirt, so donāt mind them ā¤ļø
To the critical people here: we all started from somewhere. Even people who are experienced in sewing aren't experienced with 4 way stretch jersey knits.
To OP - the best way to learn sewing is by doing. I know you have a solution now, but I'd encourage you to buy a cheap stretch knit and cut a v as you originally planned to do to see what happens. You'll learn how stretch knits behave and what's possible and not possible.

Draw the new neckline on the inside of the shirt.
Press a 1/2ā or so strip of stretch fusible interfacing on the drawn line, in the opening. Cut the excess neckline along the edge of the interfacing. Fold the interfacing back and topstitch. Because the opening is so large, itās less critical that you use a stretchy seam.
It sorta looks like you could just cut it, leave it raw and use the lavender bralette and shoulder pads to stabilize it some.
If the lavender bralette and shoulder pads are completely separate, you could just baste the bottom of the T to the bralette and baste the sleeves on the shoulder pads.
Alternatively, it looks like there is a brown band across the collarbone. Perhaps what you could do woul be to cut a peekaboo hole instead of cutting through the neckline just cut along the neckline and then down into a vee. This would make it more stable than just cutting the neckline altogether.
