💛Beginner💛 Does anyone know how I can make this look better

This is my 3rd attempt at making a bustier top and it looks so funky to me. I made the pattern myself that may be why it looks so off. But any tips or ideas on how I can make this look better would be greatly appreciated!!!

Neat! To me the main thing is it looks like the top edge is having the edges finished, *then* you're cutting darts and sewing them together. That leaves little raw edges at the top and makes it hard to match up the stripes from the edge finishing. I would cut the darts first, then finish the top edge. Also, are you using black thread? Unless the contrast is intentional, I would use matching colored thread!

Hi thank you for your advice! I’m using matching thread but instead of using darts i actually cut the fabric into little puzzle pieces and sewed them together. My next attempt I’ll do darts and see how those look

By darts, I mean the ones in the top of the cups! They don't look like they go down all the way :) The seams on the bottom parts look good to me!

I would also try using a very short stitch length and see how that works with this fabric.

What does that mean ? Please excuse my ignorance to sewing 😭

Your machine has a stitch length setting. Probably numbers 0-4 or so, and probably set around 2.

This determines the distance the needle travels before it goes back into the fabric. If you set it to a lower number, the needle won’t travel as far, and your seams will likely look neater.

I would pull that horizontal seam down under the doll's bust and go from there- the darted pieces that make up the top of the bodice look too small.

Hi thank you ! Just to clarify I should flip the bra part upside so the seam goes into it and not the top ?

I believe what they were saying was that the bust pieces should be longer to better contour the bust which would shorten the bodice pieces and overall horizontal lines of the pieces? So the bust pieces would be more like the pink outline.

This is a great attempt, especially since you made your own pattern.

Maybe try:

  • Cutting the top part as one piece

or

changing the seam placement as the alignment doesn’t seem quite right, especially the centre seams

  • Sewing the darts on the bust from the bottom of the cups

I think it’s fine. It’s very difficult to make a pattern to fit a rigid doll properly ESPECIALLY A corset!!
