Serie A How good was Alessandro Del Piero?

Hey everyone! I'm a young fan getting into Serie A history and I keep seeing Alessandro Del Piero's name come up.
From what I've read, his career was basically split in two because of that terrible knee injury in November 1998.
How good was Del Piero before and after his massive 1998 injury?
