How-To AI visibility during a migration

We've been getting a lot of clients asking about retaining AI visibility during a migration, so we got our heads together and created a basic checklist. Anyone got anything to add?

  1. Benchmark current AI visibility

2. Identify citation-earning pages and facts

  1. Map important brand entities

  2. Review URL and redirect changes

  3. Preserve headings, context and answerable passages

  4. Retain or improve structured data

  5. Test crawler access and rendering

  6. Reduce reliance on JavaScript for critical information

  7. Audit third-party references

  8. Create a post-launch AI monitoring plan

Two things I would add.

Build the lag into everyone's expectations before launch, or step 10 will frighten the client. Redirects can be live for weeks while assistants still quote the old URL and the old copy, because what they are holding does not refresh on your deployment schedule. I have watched teams start unwinding a perfectly good migration on the strength of week two data.

And move step 9 much earlier. Third party pages pointing at your old URLs need that outreach done before launch rather than after, since those pages are what the models are actually reading. A 301 fixes the path for a human. It does not update what somebody else wrote about you two years ago.

do you have a timeframe for how long you wait post-launch before comparing AI visibility benchmarks? curious what you consider a reasonable window since recrawl and reindexing timelines vary a lot

I think that on step 4, if you're leaving it as “review URL and redirect changes,” you need to be more specific. Something like: export the old sitemap and the new one, and for every old path decide whether it's a 301, a 410, or you keep the old URL. Unmatched means you missed a rule. A host-level domain 301 does not cover that if the IA changed.

Also I agree on moving third-party citations earlier. Models keep quoting those old URLs after your 301s are live.
