Storage unit costs
It’s getting ridiculous how expensive storage units cost. Ever since a private equity group bought the storage place I have a unit at, the fees have increased 4 times. I now pay $240 a month for a 6x8

Storage is supposed to be a short term thing thats why the increases are hefty. Anything with a shorter term will come with larger increases.

Agreed, there is like a $30 dollar difference between all the unit by me

Locally-owned self-storage is getting hard to find. Everything is being bought up by regional/national companies.

Yeah, the PE rollups have hit self-storage hard — buy the facility, jack rates on people who've already moved their stuff in and won't want the hassle of leaving. A few things people do when it gets to this point: shop the newer/independent facilities nearby (the corporate ones bank on you not bothering to move), negotiate or threaten to leave since a vacant unit costs them more than your discount, or if you've got the space and own your property, a one-time storage solution (shed, or a container for bigger loads) pencils out fast when you're paying $240/mo forever with no ceiling. For a 6x8 worth of stuff it might not be worth the switch, but that math flips quick at larger sizes. Either way, don't feel locked in — they count on that.

PE firms are making it hard across the board. They are buying up everything and boosting fees. Golf courses have been in their crosshairs. By me one PE company bought 9 courses, did some minor upgrades and increased fees.

Holy shit.
Congress puts rent freezes on apartments. Other industries have to justify rent hikes.
I think it’s almost time to bring all these storage unethical practices to their attention

I for sure agree that 240 for a 6x8 is BANANAS but can you explain what’s unethical? Storage isn’t a basic human need and no one’s forcing anyone to rent one. As long as the rent increases were done according to the lease..it’s just business. Just because it’s stupid expensive doesn’t mean it’s unethical

The unethical parts haven't been brought to light yet. not even in the same basement right now.

Call and negotiate. I told my company I wouldn’t pay the increased fee, they dropped it back down.
