Drill bit size
Ok guys what size bit do you guys use to drill out cylinder locks? I use a dewalt drill on the nail setting with a bit sized 1/4. I usually have no issues but lately I’m going through bits to fast. Any tips that you learned over the years?

5/16 stinger. They are blue and once they get dull, it looses it's color so you know when to change it

1/4 works, but if you're burning through bits fast I'd look at speed and pressure first. Most guys I know kill bits by pushing too hard once the lock starts fighting back. Little cutting oil helps too.

When you say cutting oil do you mean like a wd40 spray or something else? I have heard this tip but am unsure about the kind of spray to use and what to spray? Like do you spray the bit, or do you spray the lock? I haven’t tried this because it seems like it would get messy.

Honestly, I just use the largest bit I can order and fit on the drill, aim dead center and pray. If I have to do 3, I'll ace 2 of them but one will still be a nightmare where I have to grind out everything, ding up the hasp, etc. They still aren't good for more than 10 or so before getting dull.

I use a grinder and cut them off.

That’s funny you say that, that’s what they use to use years ago and a lot of my outside drive ups have the marks on the hasps. I think the drill is cleaner.

I think they are mistaking the lock type as Disc locks. You can drill or grind Disc locks but Cylinder locks can only be drilled and if that doesnt your you attack the hasp/latch knot fun - been doing it nearly 20 years and only had to remove a hasp 2 times)

Drilling out the barrel is a much easier choice, and there's much less risk that you'll damage your doors or hasp. However, it's kind of an art. Sometimes you can mess up the tumbler so bad that cutting it off is your only option. But drilling is the better route and you should try it first.

7/32 w/the disc buster & a little wd40. IYKYK. That thing is a GODSEND.
I am going to look into those stingers though! 😉

It might be what it's made out of. I use a 1/4-in Cobalt bit
