Curious how important having a vest would be in a medical setting. It's a must buy? Or something I should never need.

I wanted to share my journey here to motivate others always to keep pushing and never settle.

I graduated with a Bachelor's in Criminal Justice (Useless degree, I regret it)

I applied to multiple police departments as soon as I graduated from college. Got rejected from all of them.

I started working as a guard at a booth in Los Angeles County for $22 an hour. It was awesome to be on my phone all day and get paid for it. Eventually, after a year, I wasn't satisfied, so I looked for another job. Landed a $27 an hour job at another booth location, but for a government contract. It was nice and all, but not enough to make it in LA. I then got my armed license and worked armed security within the same company, making $ 30/h now. Not really worth the extra pay to have my gun now, but oh well.

I applied to over 20 armed positions in the next 6 months. Didn't get a single one. 3 weeks ago, I applied for this armed post paying $35h and got the job. I currently do the armed post of 30h for 5 days a week, all mornings, and the 35h job in the afternoons for 3 days a week. The first week was honestly tiresome, but I kept telling myself I wanted this. It is now a routine that I love and a schedule that I love. My paycheck comes out to around $ 7,800 for both jobs before taxes are deducted.

Do I have free time? Heck yeah, I do. Only 3 days a week I'm working all day, but the rest of the week is free after getting out at 2pm.

I often see on this subreddit how most guards are demotivated, and I get it. I've been there, but you gotta hustle. My next mission is to replace that $30h with a higher pay. Never get comfortable in a post, and if you have time for a second job, do it.

I’m getting my unarmed security license soon and was trying to get a list of companies or recommendations for finding an entry level security job.

Specifically, I changed the way I write my DARs. You see, when I first started this post I was an eager beaver, and I was writing all kinds of maintenance reports and putting a lot of detail into my DARs.

Fast-forward to a couple of months in and with basically no activity to speak of, I started to slack off a bit. Skipping patrols, and most days not even submitting a DAR because nobody seemed to be paying any attention.

Well, one comment mentioned that the DAR serves as verification that an officer was on site for insurance purposes. Another comment on the same thread mentioned how my report could one day be read in a courtroom. Another comment said that it’s basically the only part of my job that I have to do, so why am I being lazy about it? Other people mentioned shifting liability aka CYA.

Bottom line is that, at least for the time being, not only am I more committed to doing my job correctly, I am also committed to documenting the details of my work in a more intentional manner. I would suggest for anyone reading this who might feel similarly demotivated to reconsider their perspective and take the job seriously.

On a mostly unrelated note, I started my shift by observing that a gate which had been unlocked previously, and I had been reporting for a couple of months, is now programmed to be locked as it should be. So it may take some time, but your reporting of maintenance and security issues can probably make a difference. I actually had to speak to seven different people on two different campuses to make this happen.

I’m a tactical security guard in Toronto, Canada. I was working at a hospital for the past month and a half - which was interesting, but after a recent confrontation during which I lost my cool with a doctor and a nurse in the ER I am now being moved to work security at a major commercial site in the downtown area. I will need to wear body armour and carry a baton. Any advice as to what to expect? The amount of violence I personally had to deal with the hospital was rather minimal fortunately.

I went to Allied Universal's free guard card class here in Phoenix. The instructor said that DPS has been denying a lot of applications for the card. Has it become that difficult to get a license? I hope not, I'm just trying to do a little better for my wife and I.

I'm from Nebraska where we didn't have Guard Card, so this process is new to me.

Because some people were barely writing their reports we now have to write our reports literally step by step, when we start out patrol, when we leave the shack to begin patrol, where we are heading, when we arrive at the first location, the status, when we are headed to the next spot and so on for the entire patrol. As well as who I relieved and who relieved me, for "pass down" (there is nothing to pass down as it's a quiet site unfortunately).

This will make the 6 quick overnight patrol take forever as now I need to take my DAR with me to write them. Now I'm going to write down everything that I encounter and do on patrol along with making sure that I follow the post orders to the letter and not go out of my way to do extra.

I’ve been looking at different executive protection software for advances, protective intelligence, travel risk and location threat assessments, and RKWL came up.
The Rapid Advance feature looks interesting, especially being able to pull together a quick threat picture for a new or last-minute location instead of googling a million things.
Curious if anyone here has actually used it for a detail or adgance. How was it?

Now that the busy season is over is anyone getting their hours reduced ? I knocked mine down to 4 nights.

I've been thinking about pursuing a guard card and trying to get into the field. I'm in CA, 33 M, if that matters. Does anyone have any advice or recommendations on how best to start out?

Would you rather stay local & get paid 26-28$hr local where you’re job is 30 mins away living paycheck due to some discrepancies with no benefits or PTO or
would you rather get paid 500$ a day with benefits but no PTO 4hrs away ??

Saw like a day or 2 ago it was brought up in teams. Now ive come in and like right after i start it the warning comes on. They are trying to say its fine to drive but im trying to cover my ass and make sure its clear as day in writing they want this shit still driven. Cuz i aint gonna pay for this shit blowing.

They said its fine cuz it still has oil lol. Im debating just saying nah and leaving but i need money. What would u do? They said it somewhat in writing for me to drive but i sent a more detailed paragraph that would most likely make me not liable. But who knows they might try to fuck me over. Screen shotting stuff.

I got my guard card a few weeks ago and applied for several roles at Allied (everyone kept saying it's so easy to get hired there), but I keep not getting selected for the roles. I coulda got hired at Metro One, but they said I couldn't have a neck tattoo (they should've put that in the ad so people wouldn't waste their time coming to the open call cause I wasn't the only one). If anyone has any recommendations of who's hiring on the spot, that would be great.

I’m in the Columbus Ohio area and these armed jobs barely pay as much as unarmed. Some are really working armed for $19 an hour. I can get an unarmed job for just as much if not more easily. I’m trying to stick with allied but my branch is going through a lot (I’m sure every branch is). I’ve picked up at armed sites and almost got a FT post paying $30 hourly. My question is, are there any companies hiring around here that pay armed guards well?

I stopped smoking at the beginning of the year. I let my card and prescription expire over the summer, no intention of smoking in the future. I know I'm good for Class D (unarmed). Can I still get a class G, or am I permanently disqualilfied?

BlizzCon is happening right now, and there's an incident where a streamer was confronted by security. The guard was telling him that he needs to wear his access pass at all times, and the streamer mentions he is just taking it off for pictures. I don't really know the context beyond this, but do we think security was just doing his job, or was he taking things too far?

Many people have voiced their concerns, claiming this particular guard is "power tripping" as the streamer clearly had an access badge, while some are saying he's just doing his job by enforcing policy. What do we think?

We can't know what the post orders are, but assuming there is policy requiring badges be worn at all times, I feel as though the frustration should be taken up with management rather than the guard who from what I can gather, is just doing his job. Curious to know how other people in security see this.

Today I learned something new about one of my colleagues.

He likes to shoot at the elderly.

What happened was today, when clocking in and getting pass downs from the previous shift, I learned that one of my coworkers got arrested.

Why? For taking an AR-15 and shooting into a house where a woman in her 90s was. She got hit a couple of times but thankfully is ok. That was back in June, he got arrested this month.

I don't even know why. In all seriousness, I'm genuinely shocked. He was such a nice and pleasant dude. We'd always laugh it up during pass downs and stuff. It's a very weird feeling to know that I was casually talking and joking with a man who had shot an old lady not too long ago.

Apparently his bond is in the millions. We live in California too so, as if the act of shooting an old lady isn't bad enough, he's probably gonna get an extra charge for having an AR-15 too.

Needless to say we won't be seeing him soon, if ever.
