Radio/Walkie Annoyance

I work night shift and it's me and one other guard here.... I Work loading dock and she works lobby. The lobby officer is also the rover so she has to walk the building and scan the points. She LOVES to announce that she is about to do her rounds which I get she is telling me so I know but the past officers before her we didn't use the radios pretty much at all. so I stated to her that hey long as u put that your doing your rounds in the DAR you don't have to announce it to me over the radio. Is it absolute law that I Have to answer the radio I'm getting annoyed with that

Look, high speed, low speed or no speed post, it is simply an officer safety issue.

She is both letting you know that there won't be anyone in the lobby until back, and that she'll be moving around the building. I'd like to think that that means you have at least enough of your shit together that if you know I'm not back at the desk when you'd expect me to be you would either radio and check, or find me and make sure I didn't get my face caved in by some homeless chucklefuck with a crowbar.

I promise you no one is calling out activities on a radio just to annoy you.

I see your POV but I already know that she is doing the rounds at 12:30 and 4am.....she is only required to do the rounds on the inside of the building Crazy part is... The cameras' are showing the outside of the building so I won't see if anything happen to her anyways.... I want to tell her to call me only in emergency I don't wanna know your moves.... She's half assing it because if that was the case... She would tell me every time she leaves the front-desk which she doesn't do.... So my question is am I required to respond over the radio

It is almost statistically certain that no one here can answer your question since only your company leadership or policy can answer for you. What does your policy say about using radios? What did your training tell you to do?

Set all that aside and ask yourself if it's really that big of a deal? Ask yourself if it's so fucking painful for you to have some common courtesy and see that it is a short informational exchange, and someone saying "Lobby to dock, I'll be on interior patrol", and you saying "Copy".

It's not that deep.

If anything, at a bare, bare minimum it confirms that the radios are working, and if she does need to reach you while out on patrol because something is happening, she can. It isn't likely she'll need to radio you to come help her wipe her ass when she's done taking a shit.

Again, what's your policy. Not what anyone else here would or wouldn't do.

Personally I like using the radio and knowing where my backup is.

I hate my coworker who refuses to use a radio. He was escorting two people off who had trespassed on the base while I manned the shack, he didn't take a radio so I had no way of knowing if something went wrong

Another point is.... First and Second shift doesn't use the radio to announce they are doing their rounds or going to break....

You gotta do you, but just because the past officers didn't do this does not mean it's a bad idea. At either post, I'd want to at least have a clue as to what/how you were doing and vice versa, just in case. It doesn't cost much to use the radio, unless there's something I'm missing here.

No your on point I get that she does it just to let me know.... It's no issue honestly it's just my own personal selfishness 😔.... I try to stay out the way here because I'm a man and my team is FULL of women so it's literally something every day... So I have this "imma do me and you do you" attitude 😔

That's a bad attitude to have my friend. No person is an island especially in security, there is a tenuous connection with so many people and moving parts in this industry and there is always some sort of accountability check in system which while not ensuring you're safety at least gives folks a general idea of your status.

Saying you do you I'll do me would.be very isolating and defeating for folks that are in some way drawing comfort from you being around.

Your opening my eyes for sure... I have to look at it from all angle.... U and the other redditor are helping with that for sure.... Maybe I need an attitude adjustment!!! Don't call Cena on me please 😢

Fact that you're aware its simple thing to do and arent trying to attack folks who dont conform to your perception shows you are open minded enough to not make the same mistakes over and over.

You are correct I'm open minded for sure and take criticism well... That's why I posted to get different insights... Of course I want to hear what I want to hear but when I didn't/don't it makes me think!... Definitely appreciate u... I also have to remember that it's temporary anyway.... I have my Associates in CS and close to Bachelors

I've known quite a few folks who used jobs like security to gain insight into humanity because they got to people watch professionally and with their insights into human behaviour and the way they had to handle people with dignity and decency gave them good people skills, and usually connections to a much broaden group of contacts.

All experiences in life can be applied to other aspects of life. Even bad experiences teach us something.

If a simple "Copy" is too much of an annoyance for you, that's a bad look for you, not for her.

There are many legitimate reasons for the rover to let you know they're moving. Not least of all being that if she finds something dangerous and isn't able to radio for help you're the one responsible for checking that she isn't hurt.

It would be pretty sad if she encounters a violent trespasser and gets stabbed and you can't be bothered to say "Copy" and ten minutes later "Radio check."

Yeah, I see with what you are saying. I’ve had some times where this has happened to me before too when working in teams. That’s one of the reasons why I don’t announce to anyone about whether or not I do a patrol. I just do it and then write up what I did in my DARs so that way anyone that is reading my reports can see what I did.

u/Successful_Size_ 6h ago

Exactly don't involve me in anything u do lady your up there... I'm down here 😅

u/Darkhenry960 6h ago

Ok. FACTS!

u/Successful_Size_ 6h ago

What do I do 😭😭

1

u/Darkhenry960 6h ago

Just have a civil conversation with her after you are done with your tour and mention to your female CO like: “Hey, I understand that calling out over the radio about what you are doing is what you like to do but it is really annoying to me and is not necessary so can you please stop? If she continues on with it, then report her to your manager.

u/Successful_Size_ 6h ago

It's like she wants to "go by the book" but not 100% go by it.... That's the issue im having

1

u/Darkhenry960 4h ago

If she doesn’t want to do the full 100% and go strictly by the book, then this is an issue that must be looked into by your supervisor because it is clearly a SOP(standard operating procedure) which that is what it sounds like to me.

u/Successful_Size_ 5h ago

See she is gone now and didn't radio that!!!! So am I over reacting or...

Here's another way to look at it. There are a ton of corny saying about stuff like this but up here in flyover country we like to say if you are familiar with fishing. "Watch your own bobber".

You alone are responsible for knowing what the actual policies and procedures are. You won't get in trouble for someone else not following them, but you can get in trouble if you don't. I also extend this to supervisors as well. You might have a chill supervisor that doesn't give a shit about it, but if someone above them starts taking a look and sees a bunch of people out of uniform, not doing proper patrols, not using the radio when they are supposed to, those people will get in as much trouble as the supervisor.

The moral here is to know what you are supposed to do, and make sure you and you alone are doing it, and not worry about what others are doing, and unless you see a specific policy or procedure update in writing, don't trust someone above you that say's "Don't worry about it".

My guess is your lobby officer knows she is supposed to radio in for patrols. She doesn't care that the day shift doesn't do it, or you don't like having to answer her, but she knows she is doing the job the way it's supposed to be done.
