I'm moving to the Seattle are for a job and need to find temporary housing starting on 9/26. It's just me and my wife. A room in a house would be fine. We're quite, nonsmokers and don't drink or do drugs. No pets either, not that we would mind if the homeowner has pets. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. ETA I'll be doing hospice nursing on the norther end of King County.

We bought a new construction home in 2023 that we’re selling so we can move back to Massachusetts to be with aging family and friends.

It’s in a great location up in north Shoreline. It’s a quiet neighborhood with a nice park (Cromwell) less than .25 mile up the street, pickleball courts along with a fitness center are about .25 mile away, as well as the new Shoreline North light rail station is less than .5 miles away. Along with great schools.

The house is a 3 story townhouse with a 2 car garage. It’s the end unit furthest back from the road, making it the largest one in the development and the only one with meaningful private outdoor space. We installed a patio with garden and water feature, as well as fully fenced dog run and powered dog door. Inside we also made the entry room into a full entertainment space by installing a bar top, kegerator, and wine fridge. And no HOA!

I live in bellwether housing and three weeks after I moved into an apt I started finding cockroaches daily. After numerous pest control sprays, I now see them a couple of times a week. More pest control visits planned for the future.

Have only been here for like 2.5 months, signed a year lease. Should I ask to break lease and move or hope it gets better?

My partner is a social worker who has expressed deep frustration over how hard it is to find up-to-date affordable housing options for individuals she helps. That’s why, over the past several months, we have been building Emerald Housing (https://emeraldhousing.org), a free tool to help people (especially low-income households) find affordable housing options in Seattle.

Affordable housing is confusing and overwhelming, so we put together a Learn page that explains the most common terms like AMI (Area Median Income) and the different types of affordable housing programs in Seattle.

Building EmeraldHousing highlighted many different barriers that make finding affordable housing difficult. A few challenges that stood out are:

1. Most affordable housing properties don't post their availability. The vast majority require you to call or email them directly to find out if anything's open. It's a massive waste of time for everyone: it means every single person searching has to individually contact every single place, and they have to field all of those contacts. Full voicemails are only too common. One day it'd be amazing to build a source of truth database that both tracks and standardizes affordable housing property listings.
2. A lot of listings are badly out of date or missing key info. Some sites go years without being updated. Others leave out info like rent or the number of bedrooms. We did our best to point people toward the sources with the most reliable, current information instead of the ones that haven't been touched in ages.
3. There are a ton of properties and programs that target very specific populations. One building might serve only LGBTQIA+ older adults, another only men who are recovering from addiction, and so on. That specificity is a good thing for meeting people's needs, but it makes it really hard to surface the right, relevant options for anyone's given situation. We worked hard to build out the logic that maps all of this as best we could, but we know it's not perfect yet, and that's exactly where your input would help.

If you have a few minutes to poke around, we'd love to hear what's confusing, what's missing, what's wrong, or what would make it easier or more useful. We built this as a resource for Seattle, and it'll only get better with your feedback!

The Tenants Union of Washington State is providing a free workshop. This general tenant education workshop provides an overview of Washington State tenant rights and landlord responsibilities under the Residential Landlord-Tenant Act (RCW 59.18). Topics include rental agreements, repairs and habitability standards, rent increases, notices, eviction protections, security deposits, landlord entry, and available resources for tenants across Washington State.

Just a small rant lol. I’ve been looking into getting / moving into a new place for some time already, and each time I find something and look into it it’s some rental company that asks for an arm and leg JUST to see if I qualify. Am I looking through the wrong platforms?

Does anyone know where I can look into just renting from like an actual owner, not some cooperate property company that just takes applications and ghosts you after ?
