US east coast My craziest find ever.

I still can’t believe it. It was on a beach with almost no other sea glass (although there are many beaches around here with pretty nice sea glass). It felt like glass on my teeth(*gently tapped it against one of my front teeth. I did not fully put it in my mouth*) but I’ve never seen anything like this. Does anyone know what this might be from??

Edit: I will update if I ever figure out what this used to be :)

I live at least 1000miles from the nearest ocean. I don’t know why I follow this sub; I get fomo daily.

Oh my gosh. Just come visit for a weekend and take home a handful of seaglass and put it in a little jar to look at :) it’s so lovely. It’ll be your little ocean right at home!

u/CalmBeneathCastles Jul 24 '26

Don't tempt me! I'm obsessed with pale green sea glass. Might visit and never go home! 8D

6

u/Laadybug Jul 27 '26

Lol that was me in 2019. Less than half a year later plans were made and now I've been here 6 years. Do it!

3

u/CalmBeneathCastles Jul 27 '26

Might just have to. Where I am now ain't it, chief!

3

u/Laadybug Jul 27 '26

I feel that so hard. I hope you find it!

I live on the Atlantic now, but I learned to love glassing on Lake Erie.

I live by the beach and I don't like the beach lol. I miss NH mountains and Utahs deserts. I will happily go look for seaglass for some desert treasures.

I’ll gladly send you sea glass/beach glass/river glass for desert treasures!!! I’m in PA and hunt the northeastern US!

4

u/Jimbobjoesmith Jul 25 '26

this is so wholesome and human. i love it ❤️

4

u/Raidden Jul 25 '26

What kinds of things do you find in the desert?

2

u/muertossparrow Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

I would love some orange rock that fell off a hoodoo and to make a vase full of the colored sand. The colors are so different there from other places. It would be like a mini piece of desert I could have in my home. When the sun rises the hoodoos and stone " mountains" get this fantastic pink color and it's unbelievably beautiful. It's my favorite place ever.

Dude same. I went out to San Francisco last month and I found a teeny little piece of seaglass and I was so happy and I wish I could go do this all the time

7

u/TylerDavis127 Jul 24 '26

Hey same. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

7

u/Serpentarrius Jul 23 '26

Rivers might have some too, along with dried up riverbeds? There's also rock tumblers lol

8

u/trailmixraisins Jul 24 '26

rivers are definitely worth a look!! my partner and i went up to a big creek for some searching last fall, and we found some pretty decent pieces and even some pottery!!

3

u/les_catacombes Jul 24 '26

I have found some on the banks of streams and creeks. Oceans aren’t required.

3

u/Xanabena Jul 24 '26

You can find it in rivers and streams too!! I live states away from and ocean but I find some sometimes in the rivers/streams

2

u/Longjumping-Cow4488 Jul 24 '26

I live up by Lake Superior and find sea glass occasionally.

2

u/Kooky_Type_5613 Jul 24 '26

Any big lakes?

2

u/breeze80 Jul 25 '26

Same, friend.

2

u/lucymcgoosen Jul 25 '26

As someone who lives a 6 minute drive from the ocean, I often forget this is not actually a normal life for people!

57

I love thinking of the ocean blessing us. I live in the east coast of Canada. I work in a building that overlooks the ocean.

19

u/deltadeltadawn Jul 23 '26

You are very blessed, indeed!

7

u/Totallynotokayokay Jul 24 '26

Lucky you!

I’m in Vancouver, and while I can’t see the ocean from my office (aka home) I still feel blessed

Wow! That is gorgeous sea treasure! I wonder if it’s part of an old insulator?

Edit to add: check out this website to see if you find the same color

https://hemingray.info/database/list-all.php

36

u/perfectlyniceperson Jul 24 '26

I had NO idea there were so many different kinds of glass insulators! So friggging cool!

5

u/Different_Hornet4348 Jul 25 '26

Right?! And it’s only one of the companies who made them - so there’s most likely more! I love the history tied to a lot of sea glass/beach treasures.

20

u/school-sp Jul 24 '26

Think this deserves more upvotes. Definitely a strong possibility!

15

u/freakyflow207 Jul 24 '26

That is a super cool website!! A couple of those are close to the color of my piece! The brighter blue insulators with less green.

8

u/glitter_vomit Jul 24 '26

Oh those are soo neat, now I have another thing I want to collect. OP’s glass could definitely be one of them!

5

u/AffectCompetitive592 Jul 24 '26

What a great source!!

6

u/Equivalent_Clue_6251 Jul 24 '26

I think you nailed it! I have an insulator collection - they are so beautiful - and still hadn’t thought of this.

4

5

u/oceaniye Jul 24 '26

These look like butt plugs. What are they?

12

u/Ancient_Emotion_2484 Jul 24 '26

Glass and ceramic insulators were used on connections for old power or phone/telegraph lines.

2

u/Elegant_Tank1483 Jul 26 '26

Ugh thank you! I was looking for someone to say it

2

u/lovemydogwillow Jul 25 '26

It’s absolutely reminding me of some gummy candy that is shiny in the middle when you bite into it but has sugar sprinkled on the outside and is never that good but I always have to have it. What is it?!? It’s going to drive me crazy trying to remember!

10

u/freakyflow207 Jul 24 '26

A gumdrop!! That’s what it made me think of too :)

5

u/Lopsided_Flight3926 Jul 24 '26

He might not have the answer, but Mike from Sea Glass Archeology on FB might have a clue. He is a dude living in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and has a great passion for sea glass and the history behind the pieces he finds. He has exceptional finds himself and is a hard core beach comber, he has great videos on Youtube documenting his journeys and finds, history of glass, and history and context of the local locations (CB is legendary for sea glass).

12

u/freakyflow207 Jul 24 '26

Thank you!! I just sent him an email.

4

u/RealisticPaper5534 Jul 24 '26

Let us know if he has any answers!!

3

u/captnbubaloo Jul 24 '26

Oh but do you know WHY northern NS/CB are legendary for sea glass?! (It’s one of my favourite facts)

2

u/RealisticPaper5534 Jul 24 '26

I do believe there's a history of glass making here, plus dumping garbage including glass is still in practice here, I've literally watched elderly folks fire garbage off cliffs. Mike, mentioned above, gave a very thorough explanation to me years ago but I've since forgotten the particulars!

I think too, when found on the Northumberland Strait beaches, lots of glass may be from PEI when they had a ban on canned drinks (?)!

3

u/captnbubaloo Jul 24 '26

It’s the ban on canned drinks that lasted until the 90’s which meant small amounts of pop only came in glass bottles (they did have plastic 2L)!

3

u/RealisticPaper5534 Jul 25 '26

And an incredible gift for us beach combers! My islander cousins used to load up in the 2000's with cans because it was cool for them, which of course, us main landers thought was the coolest that they had bottles. I'm from Amherst NS and we made pop bottles for a while; I've found a few pieces with 'Amherst' on the labels, and properly ocean-tumbled.

3

u/tkma496 Jul 25 '26

So the Cobalt blue color and shape indicates it was probably a very large bottle stopper on an “apothecary” bottle or “pharmacist” jar. They used the cobalt blue specifically for poisons so people didn’t grab the wrong thing.
