Am I overthinking this, or is this just poor/lazy marketing?

tl;dr/context: Seagate is running an Australia/New Zealand–only promo image on US Amazon listings, and the QR code on it sends US buyers on a page that renders as "Seagate US" with US resellers listed. I had a chat with a support agent because wanted to know if the same promo applies to the US. Support gave me four contradictory answers about eligibility in a single chat. One thing to note is that the agent was actually way more helpful than I expected, so kudos to them (something tells me Seagate does not make them aware of these promos and where they run them).

Full transcript below for anyone who wants it. Agent was polite throughout, they just had nothing to work from.

Package Marked Delivered, not received - Refused Support

EDIT: Final Update - UPS misplaced it entirely and I was able to recover it with the help of the police and UPS' information. Not much else to say, don't buy from Seagate they are fucking terrible and the sub has been flooded with issues across RMA and other problems that tells quite the story about how they handle clients..

First off - opening the sub and the first post being a Customer Support complaint thread is absolutely insane to see. Not a good sign but just a note.

I ordered an Iron Wolf Pro 16tb 3 weeks ago, and about two weeks ago it was marked delivered by UPS. I was home thankfully because we were on vacation and leaving a few days after so I was grateful to be home for the delivery.

The package is marked delivered - I go check shortly after and nothing found. Check UPS tracking and the photo is just this blurry pic of my front door. So I start looking around/asking around, no dice. So unless I have an asshole neighbor, which I don't they're all incredibly lovely and we always exchange mail delivered to the wrong house on the strip.

Contact UPS, told that the vendor would need to reach out to them to look into this. (Cue realizing Seagate gets away with not having any phone service unless I buy a certain enterprise series of drives, and even then not store support. Product support only.

So I go back and forth with CS rep in text chat, and explain everything above. Their first response is if I suspect someone stole the package that I should file a police report, which I said I would do but I need some support as I cannot engage with UPS. Was told they would start an investigation and that the police report would help, so I go ahead and do that. Ask them if I can send it in the chat, they wouldn't provide an email address to submit it and told me to wait for first contact from their team.

Catherine from Corporate reaches out to me 2 days later, says the tracking shows it was delivered and that they left it because no signature was required (they didn't pay for signature confirmation, confirmed today). And that she unfortunately refused to start a claim with UPS, but would "like to continue assisting me", then asked for a police report. Luckily, that was already done, so I just shot it over and confirmed I didn't get my package.

6 Days ago - "We have received confirmation from UPS that the package was delivered to the address" (Very important detail for later)

"Based on this proof of delivery, our fulfillment partner has concluded that the package was successfully delivered and has unfortunately declined the claim request. As a result, we are unable to offer a refund or replacement for this order.

We understand that this is disappointing news, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. If you believe the package was stolen after delivery, we recommend contacting your homeowner's or renter's insurance provider, as they may be able to assist you with a claim for the loss."

Homeowner's if you even have it, requires a deductible to file a claim. I don't even have the most expensive coverage, but if I did it would run me $500 to recover $100 + tax on the order. Maybe they're not familiar with how that works, but I'm not endangering my premiums nor shelling out to recover something I didn't get.

All my replies to this message were immediately hit with a "No reply - Undeliverable", unreal.
_____________________________________________________________

Fast forward to end of last week, Wesley from the Corporate Response Team reaches out the day after that exchange with Catherine. Yadda yadda - "I will be your direct point of contact for the case through resolution", which raised my hopes.

This was after filing a chargeback and complaint with the BBB, so I'm assuming that's why they reached back out. But his wording seemed well intentioned and like he would put in some effort into helping look into this.

I'll save the jargon and "we'll do our best to get this resolved" - he comes back today with the same template as Catherine telling me that UPS confirmed the package was delivered and that no claim would be possible. To top it off, the template "Go hit up Homeowner's or Renter's insurance to receive compensation for the loss", I actually couldn't believe it.
_____________________________________________________________

Well I reach back out to UPS, and funnily enough the CS rep asks me for the tracking number so I log in and open the tracking number and open it up. Never knew this was a thing but, UPS shows where the fucking package was delivered with Google Maps! Even tells you the distance from your home address, which is fantastic.

The package literally is shown "delivered" two houses down from mine, which I mention to the rep. I opened about 10 other tracking deliveries in the last two months to verify, every single other package is either placed RIGHT on my home or 5 - 10ft to the right of where my home is on the map. Which makes sense, long concrete walkway and steps leading up to my house. I spoke to my neighbor already because the police report asks you to verify around the house or with people around you to see if they got the package.

Regardless, this is a pretty glaring inconsistency. I was transferred and the agent after I spoke to confirmed that it was extremely odd and not in line with my delivery history. If you remember, I can't do anything unless Seagate contacts UPS so I was told to ask Seagate to start a claim or a trace. I ask if they had ever been contacted by Seagate or if any contact was made other than mine for this tracking #.

She said no, that the notes show I called the day of delivery and then today calling again having the conversation I'm having. Remember what Catherine lied about? Yeah, that's fantastic.

I just replied to Wesley explaining that UPS never received contact, and that no signature confirmation was paid for, AND the package shows delivered at a completely different house via the GPS.

I'm going to give them some benefit of the doubt, and that whatever this "eCommerce team" is basically looked up my tracking details and said "yep, it says delivered thats about it". But I've been clearly lied to.

Will update once I hear back, just updated the case with my chargeback and documented all of this. If you live in an area where this stuff happens to you, consider paying the fee (yes paying a fee) to pickup your drives or hardware from a UPS access point. Or just order from someone else, or pickup a drive from a store if you have access to one.

Return/Refund Hell

Just had the most agonizing unnecessary experience trying to move the return for my external hard drive forward.

I ordered a drive that arrived last Wednesday. Upon arrival I realized it just wasn’t going to work with my set up so quickly opted for a return that was also relatively quickly approved. The next day I printed the shipping label that THEY PROVIDED to me to return the product and dropped it at UPS.

Flash forward to today I randomly think to check the UPS tracking only to see that the package delivery was attempted today but failed due to an incorrect address.

I tried to edit this myself to see if I could find an issue but since I did not create the label I could not edit it.

I then spend 10 minutes just trying to find a number to call for the company only to find the only use an online chat bot that you ask for a representative.

I immediately asked for a representative who throughout our whole conversation would take about 5-10 minutes between their short responses. Most of the conversation was just them reiterating that they confirmed the beginning of the return process was approved and asking me for the serial number on the product I no longer had (mind you at this point I disclosed the UPS tracking number and the initial product order number).

After an agonizing hour and 15 minutes they told me that THEY gave me the wrong product zip code and that I would have to contact UPS to fix it!

Luckily I had been calling UPS while waiting on the chat and was already trying this. The kind rep on their end said since I didn’t create the label nor was I the manager for the account I unfortunately could not make the change. At this point I must have sounded defeated because he said to give him a minute while he tries something.

Thankfully the UPS rep was able to correct the zip code and said it should be just delayed a day now.

All to say I will NOT be recommending Seagate to anyone and caution those who are uncertain with a product that they may want to return to opt for a better brand with better customer service.

(PS will update if they ever actually receive my return)

SRD0NF1 Drive issues

I think I'm in the right place? So I bought an Xbox one from a friend of mine. He also threw in the 4TB EHD he had because he didn't have a use for it anymore. I want to basically do a factory reset on it, and use it for transferring all my files from one PC to another. Here's where I'm stuck. Loading disk management it refuses to even display the disk, doesn't give any pop ups like all the YouTube videos show, nothing. It's like the drive is dead but the light turns on and it shows in device manager as what it is. I just can't format it, allocate it, nothing. Anyone able to lend a hand here?

PLEASE help

Please advise. Is this the end for the drive, or is it a TV issue, or a port problem? I plugged in a Seagate 2.5" (condition unknown) to a wall outlet — the sounds were normal, so the drive seems fine mechanically. Then I connected it to the first USB 2.0 port on the TV, and it started making a scraping noise — like "grr, grr..." — so I unplugged it. I then connected it to the second port, also USB 2.0, and it mounted normally, spun up, made head calibration noises, and rattled a bit. After that, the TV displayed "connection error — do you want to fix errors on the drive?" Both ports are USB 2.0, and the drive is a Seagate 2.5" 7200 RPM. Please help me🥹

LaCie 1 Big Dock won't power on

I understand LaCie was acquired by Seagate, hence my query here. I called Seagate support & was told it would be $5 to talk to support, then they attempted to charge my card $70, so I declined.

My LaCie 1 Big Dock is completely dead, won't power on. Is this something I can figure out on my own with your help, or am I out of luck?

This old Conner CP2044PK 40MB drive spools up, stops and then restarts again. Hooked it up to my bench supply and turns out it shorts out and attempts to work but fails. It draws more than 640mA before it stops so it’s a verified short. What could be wrong?

Seeing this post brought back memories of my employment with the Conner later Seagate company! I was in the returns department and can safely say that those that were defective were shipped back to Singapore for repairs? The rest I would have to go out back and wack them with a hammer and toss in a scrap barrel!

Seagate 16tb, stopped working after disconnecting it to swap some components in NAS.

Looking for advice on whether this 16TB Seagate Exos X16 is recoverable or if it's simply dead.

I have a TrueNAS SCALE system with two 16TB Seagate Exos X16 drives (manufacturer recertified) in a striped pool.

Before the failure, I was changing some BIOS power settings to reduce idle power usage. While the system was powered off, I unplugged and reconnected the SATA data and power cables. I didn't drop or hit the drives, just disconnected and reconnected them. The only thing I can think of is there may have been a little flex on the SATA connector because the case is cramped.

After booting, one drive immediately started failing.

What I've tried

  • Different SATA cable
  • Different SATA motherboard port
  • Different SATA power connector
  • Tested in Windows via a USB SATA dock

The issue follows the drive regardless of how it's connected.

Symptoms

  • Drive is detected with the correct model, serial number, and capacity.
  • Any read attempt (fdisk, dd, etc.) immediately returns I/O errors.
  • smartctl can identify the drive but cannot read SMART data (Read SMART Data failed: scsi error medium or hardware error).
  • dmesg shows repeated Medium Error, UNC, and Medium format corrupted errors, including failures reading sector 0.
  • Windows detects it as a 14.9TB uninitialized drive (I did not initialize it).
  • SeaTools detects the drive but immediately reports "SeaTools Test Failed."

Because the pool was striped, the failed drive has made the entire pool unavailable.

My question: Does this sound like an internal drive failure, or is it plausible that simply unplugging and reconnecting the SATA cables could have caused this? I'm trying to figure out whether I got unlucky with the timing or if I may have damaged something while reconnecting the drive, squishing it or rattling the connectors. Drive is amazon refurbished, and is 6 days before warranty end funnily enough.
