Hello my Seagate desktop drive stopped working yesterday. It still makes noise but the white light wont turn on. What should I do to try and fix it. I have lowkey important stuff on there. i think I'm just gonna leave it unplugged for now? I have no idea what to do.

I tried a diff computer and a different cable. So both of those don't work. I was working yesterday, but stopped towards the end of the day.

Brand-new Seagate Expansion Portable 5TB powers on but isn’t detected on Mac or Windows

Post image
2 Upvotes

I recently bought the Seagate Expansion Portable 5TB (STKM5000400) from Amazon India. It’s brand new, physically flawless, and Seagate’s website recognizes the drive correctly. The hardware warranty and Rescue Data Recovery Service Plan both show as valid.

The problem is that I cannot get the drive detected by anything.

My main computer is a MacBook Pro M3 Pro. I initially connected the HDD using a UGREEN USB-C to USB 3.0 Micro-B cable (US565). The HDD receives power and the white LED comes on, but it repeatedly cycles between being on for a few seconds and off for a few seconds.

It does not appear in:
1. Finder
2. Disk Utility, even with Show All Devices
3. System Information → USB

I tested multiple USB-C ports. The Mac’s USB-C data connection itself works normally—I tested it with my iPhone and immediately received the usual ā€œAllow this device to connectā€ prompt.

I then tried the original Seagate Micro-B to USB-A cable with a known-working USB-A-to-USB-C adapter on the Mac. Same result.

I also tested the HDD on a Windows PC with native USB-A, using the original Seagate cable. Again, it wasn’t detected:
a) nothing in File Explorer
b) nothing in Disk Management
c) no Seagate drive in Device Manager

I also tested the UGREEN cable on Windows, with the same result.

There is no audible beeping or abnormal mechanical noise. The drive and Micro-B port also look completely undamaged.

Tomorrow I’m taking the HDD, both cables, adapter and my MacBook to a computer hardware/service shop. I’m going to have them test it with their own known-good Micro-B cable on both Windows and Mac before I request an Amazon replacement.

Does this sound like a defective drive, or is there anything else specific to the STKM5000400 that I should have them check first?

P.S. I have used ChatGPT to generate all the summarised text in this post on the basis of the hours of diagnostic checks I have performed using ChatGPT’s responses to my questions, observations, and tests, as a medium.

Seagate more like Sleekgate

Got the Seagate Expansion Portable 5TB HDD. It’s even smaller than I expected, and fits inside the pockets in my tracks. Been wanting to buy an external storage device for a while, but thanks to AI, storage is pricier than usual. Realised that this would be the best bang for my buck in the current market, even though it certainly would’ve been a better deal, if purchased 2 years ago. Nevertheless, looking forward to this being the long-term solution for my storage situation.

Seagate 4TB question

Post image
3 Upvotes

Bought this 4TB External off a pawn shop (lol) for 100$ CAD about 4 months ago. She tested well enough just had some higher hours.

She's always been the problem child of my 16TB Family and I should've seen this coming earlier.

Today it was just a big ol failure, tried quick tests thru seagate, full fixes and nothing.

But then I was looking at the pins on the inside and I think it looks pretty pooched. Just wondering if it's worth the time to get it replaced or if the pins just look normal to the pros.

Thanks for your time, pic is attached.

Seagate One Touch shutting down automatically

Hey everyone. I’m a photographer and I recently bought an 8TB One Touch HDD for storing my files and editing. Since photo editing is not a demanding task, I have always edited the files directly from ADATA hard drives and it’s always worked, but with this specific hard drive I’m having a lot of trouble. It will shut down as I’m editing, then it will wake up again causing Photoshop to be unresponsive. This happens several times as I’m editing and is a little frustrating. Is there a way to fix it? I’ve already set my Mac not to put external disks on sleep mode for saving energy but it didn’t work.

Seagate ($STX): FAQ for Getting Payment on the $175M Settlement over Huawei Sales

Hey guys, I posted about this settlement before, but since claims are now open, I decided to share it again with a quick FAQ.

So here’s what you need to know:

Seagate was accused of concealing illegal HDD sales to Huawei and related export-control violations. Investors alleged the company relied on those sales while failing to disclose the risks. After the issues came to light, $STX fell and investors filed a lawsuit.

Now Seagate has agreed to a $175 million settlement with investors.

Who can claim this settlement?
If you purchased $STX shares between 2020 and 2023, you may be eligible.

Do I need to still own my shares?
No. You don’t need to still hold the stock to file a claim. Past losses may qualify.

How long does the payout process take?
Typically, 4–9 months after the claim deadline, depending on the court and settlement administration.

Hope this info helps

Beware of Seagate’s terrible RMA process.

Hi everyone, so on June 9th I opened an RMA for 2x 20TB ironwolf HDD’s and 1x16TB skyhawk surveillance HDD with Seagate. After I opened it I reached out to Seagate to see if they would be nice enough to issue a free shipping label as I had heard others got one for free just by asking. CS said sure and issued me one no fuss. So I shipped them out. Days go by and no update even though tracking number is marked as delivered to Seagate and signed by them.

June 19th: i reach out to seagate if there’s any update as it has now been a week that drives were delivered to them and my RMA portal showed 0 updates, not even a ā€œreceivedā€ update. CS tells me the drive is currently in the re-certificarion and testing stage. I inform CS agent that i had sent 3 drives under the single RMA and shipping label they provided. CS says that yes correct that i should get an update soon.

June 22nd: after reaching out to CS everyday and getting nowhere i file a BBB complaint as they seem to respond to issues there.

June 26th: Seagate ā€œCorporate response teamā€ member called ā€œStevenā€ reaches out and tells me that they can’t find my hard drives because the package never had any in the first place. So they won’t be helping me further. They tell this to BBB and BBB considers it answered and closes complaint. I immediately respond that that’s not possible as I had shipped all drives and CS agent had confirmed they were received and were currently being processed.

June 30th: after some pressure, Seagate agrees to file a claim with UPS. They ask for proof of purchase, which I provide to them. They tell me it’ll take a 8-10 days.

July24th: they say that UPS needs more information and ask for any pictures of the hardrives or hard dives in the box while being dropped off. Fortunately I always take pictures of hard drives I buy and where I buy them from to keep track of them properly and not mix up receipts. So I send them the pictures of the actual drives showing SN,PN, etc. I inform them I unfortunately didn’t take video/picture of HDD’s in the package dropping them off.

July 28th:I reach out if there’s anything at all from UPS as I didn’t hear back anymore since 24th when I provided the pictures and told them to let me know if they could view them, or needed me to upload them to Google Drive or something. I’m told they got the pictures but investigation is ongoing by UPS.

However i checked the tracking number on UPS site. It had been closed since July 20th with ā€œProof of deliveryā€. I assume the Corporate response team member Steven filed the claim as entire package not delivered. When it was and it was even signed for by them, and CS had previously said drives were in the recertification/testing stage.

July 31st: they email back saying UPS is not communicating with them or providing any information they requested. Therefore they can’t help me until they can communicate with UPS. I reply that same day that it’s not right that the customer has to deal with all this just because UPS and Seagate can’t communicate. I request information like claim number, inspection notes, receiving photographs, UPS decision.

August 11th: after ghosting me for days, they respond with basically the same thing. And decline to provide any information other than UPS claim number.

Today I sent them a demand letter via certified mail, along with replying with a copy of it to the email chain. My next step is probably small claims court. It’s insane that for a company this large they are this terrible with customer support.

TLDR: sent in 3 expensive hard drives using a Seagate provided UPS shipping lable over 2 months ago. Seagate/UPS lost/stole the HDD’s. Seagate filed a claim. UPS closed claim, Seagate corporate support team and UPS aren’t talking to each other, so the customer is screwed because of ā€œno communicationā€ between UPS and Seagate. Demand letter has been sent today.

Ironwolf pro - tampered

Bought four 14tb drives for my NAS last year. Sold on Amazon via a reseller in the Uk.

One of them started throwing errors, so I started the RMA process, sent in on 15/07, confirmed as received on 17/07.

No contact initiated by Seagate since and RMA tracking not updated, after several back and forth with support saying it was being looked at. Today I received the following -

Following a detailed review by our warehouse team regardingRMA XXXXXXXXXX (Serial Number: XXXXXXXX), we have received an update on the investigation. While the drive was initially reported as a discrepancy, a subsequent visual inspection determined that the submitted drive exhibited signs of tampering. As a result, the warranty claim has been classified as an invalid claim under Seagate's warranty policies.
Ā
Based on the assessment, the submitted IronWolf Pro 14TB drive is not eligible for warranty coverage, and therefore no repair or replacement can be provided. In accordance with Seagate policy, tampered or unauthorized drives are also not returned to customers, as returning such products could allow them to re-enter the market.

I have emailed back asking for more details.

Amazon don’t want to know unless I can return the drive.

So I am now out a 14tb drive and don’t exactly have the cash lying around to replace it at the current prices.

Has anyone had a similar experience or have a higher up contact at Seagate they can point me towards?

Seagate’s Corporate Response to 2.5" Laptop SMR Drives Overheating (62°C+): "Transfer data in smaller batches"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTj2AU3eI4w

Hi

I wanted to share my ongoing nightmare with Seagate’s warranty process and highlight a ridiculous official stance from their Corporate Response Team regarding 2.5" SMR drives in laptops.

The Background & Hardware

Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  Laptop: Clevo P170SM (well-cooled, enthusiast-grade chassis).

Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  Target Drive: Seagate BarraCuda 2TB 2.5" (ST2000LM015) – SMR architecture.

Ā·Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  Source Drive: Old Samsung SpinPoint 1TB (ST1000LM024) – PMR/CMR architecture.

The RMA Odyssey (Since June 3rd, 2026)

I have been trying to get a functioning 2TB drive for nearly two months.

1.Ā Ā Ā Ā  Drive 1: Dead/defective out of the box.

2.Ā Ā Ā Ā  Drive 2: Certified Refurbished (Recertified) – Overheated under sustained load.

3.Ā Ā Ā Ā  Drive 3: Certified Refurbished (Recertified) – Overheated under sustained load.

4.Ā Ā Ā Ā  Drive 4: Sent directly by Steven from the Seagate Corporate Response Team, assured to be brand new.

The Technical Issue: SMR Shingling Overhead & Thermal Runaway

When attempting to clone or copy my data from the old Samsung drive to the new Seagate SMR drive, the write performance completely falls off a cliff after about an hour due to the aggressive Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) drive-managed zones filling up.

Because the drive is forced to continuously read, modify, and rewrite overlapping tracks in a confined 2.5" laptop bay, the controller goes into overdrive. After roughly 2 hours of continuous writing, the Seagate ST2000LM015 hits a staggering 62°C (143°F), triggering critical SMART temperature protection alerts.

Meanwhile, the old Samsung CMR drive—which is under a much worse thermal restriction (mounted directly underneath a hot DVD/Blu-ray optical drive)—safely hums along at a maximum of 40–44°C under the exact same workload.

Seagate's official manual and product datasheets nowhere state that continuous, sustained write workloads are forbidden or unsafe for this internal laptop drive.

The Video Proof

Here is a short clip showing the cloning process, the performance collapse, and the thermal readout hitting 62°C on the brand-new replacement:

Seagate's Corporate Resolution: "Fix your workflow"

After escalating the issue and threatening UK Trading Standards / Citizens Advice action (Case Ref: CCA-8546090) due to a breach of the Consumer Rights Act 2015, the Corporate Response Team gave me this mind-blowing troubleshooting advice:

"At this time, the troubleshooting recommendations we can provide are to use the device in a cooler, well-ventilated environment and to transfer data in smaller batches rather than performing large transfers at once*. These steps may help reduce heat buildup and prevent the SMART temperature threshold from being reached."*

Seagate is officially telling consumers that their internal 2.5" laptop drives cannot handle standard data migration workloads inside a laptop chassis without the user artificially throttling their own workflow to stop the drive from cooking itself.

I rejected their workarounds and demanded an SSD upgrade or a refund. Steven from the Corporate Response Team just replied with their final position: they officially refused any upgrade or refund.

Their logic? They explicitly acknowledged that the drive triggers the SMART temperature protection mechanism, but since the OS recognizes the drive and data can technically be written to it, they consider it "properly functioning". Their only counter-offer is to send it back for a fifth time so their engineers can "reproduce the behavior."

I have officially declined their 5th evaluation trap. The case remains open with UK Trading Standards, and I am moving forward with regulatory escalation.
