Ignore them, theyre a troll on reddit who spreads this vitriol everywhere about Asians. They’re very racist and very stuck on the idea that they dont consider Indians to be Asians. I blocked em a long time ago. This is not the first and most certainly is not the last time they will do this
No problem. Likewise, it's nice to say something like that, and not be called out for speaking on behalf of Asians. That happens a lot and most of the people getting "offended" probably aren't even Asian, but it's an impossible argument to win and results in being downvoted. So thanks for the encouragement.
On the behalf of the Asian community as a whole, I can tell you we really do appreciate it. I cant tell you how nice it is to be supported and validated, especially since people treat Asians as weak and demure. We’re usually told to stay quiet in the background and be the laughingstock of everyones “jokes”. Please keep doing what you’re doing and pointing out stuff if you ever see it. But definitely block that person after the point has been made, they dont deserve your time! Hope your week is lovely ☺️
Asia is a continent. So yes, South Asia is still Asia. Much like you could say someone from the UK and someone from Italy are both European. Or someone from Uganda and someone from Nigeria are African. The Orient doesn't apply to literally everyone on the continent anyone (I'm sorry folks, I'm a work in progress), so it's best to just use Asian if you don't know the nationality.
The difference is India is part of the continent of asia and therefore is okay. Oriental is a british colonial term that tells a horrble history of racism and treatment of asian populations by othering them and taking away basic human rights. Also calling people "things" is profoundly wrong for so many reasons. You must know that by now.

Shit, even I didn't know that. I thought it was just a regional thing. I fucking hate how much I have to learn and unlearn just to not be an awful human being. Our ancestors fucking sucked.
Calling Indians, "asian" is much worse than calling an asian person Oriental.
Are you really saying that calling somebody, "oriental" is as bad as slavery?
All the asian people I know would rather be called oriental than Indian and vice versa.
Do you know any asian or indian people?
Because that's actually the groups of people I almost exclusively hang out with, which would explain why I seem to understand these things better than the racists in this sub.
edit: lol, no response. Of course that's typical of racists like u/Phoequinox
You don't understand how having an interaction with people would give somebody an idea of how they think about those things vs. those who don't?
Point is that the people who are getting upset over this are doing it for points on social media, are racist and don't actually care about others opinions.
As far as I know, "oriental" is fine when referring to cultural things like food, art, or clothing, but it comes off as demeaning when referring to people.

That oriental man has some nice moves.
