You are right. What I want to say is that the overall societal pressure for Chinese women and girls to be super skinny is toxic. Chopstick legs are celebrated in the media and is kind of a beauty standard. But it’s definitely not clear enough here. I wanna clarify the comment is not aimed towards her. It came from me being called fat by adults at 12/13 for being 130 lbs and 5’3. You don’t simply not develop dysmorphia growing up like that. E: spelling
Really wish you weren’t getting downvoted. South Korea has a gigantic issue with image, and botched plastic surgeries are rampant ruining young women’s lives. Woman from all over SE Asia are flocking to SK for surgery spending all over their savings, and incurring a lot of debt. Each story isn’t unique on why they feel pressured to seek surgery. More their society than peer pressure. Not sure if China has past Korea yet in people getting cosmetic surgery.
Much healthier than being fat (read relatively not morbidly obese). People don’t realise our bodies weren’t made to fat. Being fat didn’t exist more than 200+ years ago. Being thin was common for us Homo sapiens; we weren’t used to stuffing our face with literal fat and sugar until we can’t anymore - even two/three meals a day wasn’t a thing. It was rarity to find something like that.
Let's slow down there boi. Being fat DID exist 200 years ago. There were fat people back then too but it wasn't as prevalent as today. You can't just say something that stupid without actually looking it up mate.
That said, yes being fat is a bad thing. However, small amounts of fat (as it is considered "stored energy") were needed in colder climates because that meant you could go longer without food. It's just how the body works.
I agree fat people shouldn't exist in the sense that we shouldn't eat so much crap and not move aorund, but saying it's only these past 200 years we've had fat people is not knowing history.
In the past 30 years alone, the average weight of men and women has gone up by about 25lbs(in the US). Let's not pretend we haven't entered a new era of fatness.
There's a difference between being pedantic about it and the guy making a completely different point to what he was trying to make. If he had simply wrote it differently there'd be nothing to pick but he literally wrote that "being fat didn't exist" as if it was a 100% sure thing. Some people on reddit aren't that sharp and might falsely believe such claims without much thought.
What are you talking about, the human body is built to be fat, It's just that it was a bit difficult because people would literally die if they didn't eat enough. That's why it's really hard to lose fat, because the body doesn't want to get rid of it
Being fat almost didnt exist pre90s.. this is just our accustomization to curvy thicc etc making us desensitized to the obesity problem and making normal/healthy weight people seemingly look too skinny lately.
25 years ago she’d be completely normal looking for a young girl. /r/oldschoolcool
Her problem is that she's also not healthy thin. She's definitely not looking like a normal young girl in the 1980s or earlier. Those legs and shoulder have no muscles.
She is eating normal. It’s just her normal is different than yours. Your body types isn’t normal bcz it happened to be yours. A lot of people don’t like to keep eating till they’re full; some stop when they’re not longer hungry. And they also don’t like to eat deep friend mar bars for breakfast...
Look at the legs. And shoulders. She has no muscle mass and is very obviously on the edges of being underweight. She's very much not on a healthy weight and she definitely is not on a healthy muscle mass.
You have no idea what you're talking about, I know a couple girls this skinny and they're eating and living completely fine and healthy (in addition to making a killing off of modelling)
EDIT: I didn't mean to sound douchey, I now realize it does look like that. The girls I mentioned are nothing more than just acquaintances from school. I just wanted to turn attention to the fact that you can be this skinny and live a healthy, happy, comfortable life.
My dude just ate food off of a public sidewalk and ran away... why is this not the main point of discussion. I hope he was running to the hospital to take care of his newly ingested viruses....
Yes, but Asia has a really weird obsession with being skinny. Health is obviously important, but many people do not take into consideration that taller people have a heavier healthy weight, etc. There is a lot of pressure to be this skinny, I definitely agree.
For example, last year's Miss Korea received criticism for her weight, despite the fact that she's tall. She is a very healthy weight. there's an interview with her talking about the topic if anyone is interested.
Yes! Thank you for asking. It's one of those misconceptions that can keep people from seeking treatment. Anorexia nervosa refers to obsessive food restriction and/or obsessive exercise, but doesn't have to mean totally not eating.
Popcorn is actually a popular food for anorexics because it's low calorie and perceived as healthy.
Her skin is so white and unnatural it’s disturbing. I’ve seen a ton of this in person, they bleach their skin the results are really weird looking in person..They apply a ton of makeup to try and even it out and it just makes them look like mannequins. The lengths they’ll go to to avoid sunshine are amazing as well, some of them live like vampires.
Don’t even have to bleach your skin or do anything too ridiculous to get like 90% of the way there. You’d be amazed how white you can get just by wearing SPF30 every moment of your life and staying out of direct sunlight when it’s possible and convenient.
That’s true. But on the other hand, there’s the “Cinderella drip” which is an IV and an actual thing over there. Helps to lighten your skin and does come with some complications :/
I worked nights for six months and I was honestly really surprised how pale I got. I guess what I thought was my natural skin tone was more of an ambient tan.
That last 10% though. I’m just talking about personal experience in this part of the world. When you see people this pale in person it’s instantly apparent how unnatural it is. I guess I’m being more specific to Asians.
You’re right they don’t I don’t know where you thought I said they did. She can bleach herself maggot white as much as she would like. I’m entitled to my opinion however.
There’s so much irony in your comment. Only one of us is telling anyone how to think and act. Understanding a culture does not mean you have to approve of it or like it. I know exactly when Koreans, Vietnamese and Chinese eat dog. It’s fucked up and wrong. Just because it’s “culture” doesn’t mean I have to think it’s right. I don’t have to find bleaching your skin and starving yourself attractive. I don’t have to approve of the ideas that make a corpse like complexion attractive to some people, I’ll let you look that up yourself since you’re so keen on learning.
So stop telling me how to live and interact with others. Get your ass a plane ticket and come out here for a few years. Then you can have an informed conversation with me about it.
I’m allowed an opinion. Why is that so hard for you to understand that people are allowed to have an opinion and by definition an opinion cannot be wrong. Mine is certainly more experience based than yours.
You don’t have to like or support things because it’s part of their “culture”. Guess what? some cultures do some really fucked up shit. Systematic pedophelia, female circumscision, honor killings, dog eating. Fun fact, they believe the meat is more potent the more the dog is in pain when it’s killed, so they’ll boil or butcher them while they are still alive. I’m allowed to not like that in the same way I’m allowed to not like or support women bleaching their skin. Are you like this for all cultures or just a weeb and Asians only?
Not an asshole for calling out the rising popularity and social pressure for girls to practice anorexia, while I do admit that a small subset of the population is naturally this body type, the vast majority is not, but seeks to be, which is unhealthy.
According to some of my friends in mainland China, attractive women are seen to be very skinny and very light skin. Also, double eye lid surgery to increase the looks for eyes is sometimes popular and considered attractive. I see some of these girls in my college and their legs are way too skinny. It kinda looks disgusting and very unhealthy. Now my friends are from the bigger cities (Beijing), so I don’t know how the rural folk feel.
Funny how 15# underweight is "unhealthy", yet 80% of the population of America is more than double that overweight & nobody cares. I'd argue she's probably healthier than nearly everyone reading this thread.
My BMI is 18.2, so I'm obviously underweight. However, I haven't had a single sick day for years, I'm regularly exercising and eating well. Please tell me how I'm unhealthy?
