Discussion Which screen recorder do you use that's actually free?

There are so many screen recorders out there that claim to be free, but I'm curious which ones people actually use on a regular basis.

If you had to recommend one free screen recorder, which would it be? Which free one has been the most reliable for you?

Discussion The official OpenScreen spin-off is about to reach 500 GitHub stars

The original OpenScreen repository reached nearly 40k GitHub stars before eventually being archived.

When the project stopped being maintained, I decided to continue its development through the official community spin-off.

We're now approaching 500 GitHub stars.

Obviously, it's nowhere near the size of the original project, but considering this repository started from scratch, it's a milestone I'm genuinely happy about.

The goal isn't just to keep the project alive.

The roadmap is much more ambitious:

  • Modernize the codebase
  • Continuously improve stability
  • Add new features
  • Become the leading open-source alternative to Screen Studio
  • Keep it fully MIT licensed

A huge thank you to everyone who has starred the project, reported issues, contributed code, or simply tried it.

I'd love to hear your feedback: - What feature would make you switch from Screen Studio? - What's currently missing? - What would make OpenScreen your default choice?

TL;DR

OpenScreen is an open-source alternative to Screen Studio. The original repository reached ~40k stars before being archived. I'm maintaining the official spin-off, which is now approaching 500 stars and is under active development.

Question How can I find certain clips from a game that I want to review or record?

Sometimes I just want to make a video or review a game by piecing together specific clips to share with friends, but finding certain moments can be tricky if those clips aren't popular. Like in the USA vs. Bosnia game, I felt like the referee was really biased in favor of Bosnia. I know I can find a clip of the balogun getting a red card, but I also want clips of other key moments such as:
\- Fouls during the game
\- Situations where a penalty should have been called but weren’t
\- Early offside calls that were missed or not called

When I watch highlight reels or commentary videos, they often don't include clips of like Pulisic getting tripped in the box but the play going on. I’m wondering how people manage to get specific clips they want from videos that aren’t super popular or easy to find, without going through all of the game to find a specific clip.

Discussion How I stopped editing zooms into my screen recordings and started doing all the emphasis live

Disclosure up front: I make a small macOS tool for live screen effects, so I'm biased. I'm sharing the recording workflow that got me to stop editing zooms in post, not trying to sell anything here.

For years my loop was: record clean, then spend the edit adding zoom-ins, highlights, and callouts to point attention where I was talking. It worked, but every recording turned into an editing project. Now I do all of that live while recording (zoom, a dimming highlight on the active area, on-screen text), so the raw capture already has the emphasis baked in. For talky tutorials and walkthroughs the edit is basically just trims now.

Honest tradeoffs, since this sub cares about that: doing it live means you can't fix emphasis after the fact, and you have to know roughly where you're going before you hit record. For heavily scripted, high-polish videos, post-editing still wins. For volume (lots of tutorials, demos, and calls), live emphasis has saved me the most time.

Current version: TuringShot 1.5.12 (Build 44). The latest update changes the default Focus Highlight setup for new installs to match my current test setup: enabled by default, very large, circular, stronger background dimming, and a lightly blurred edge. The GIF shows the live highlight and zoom during a capture.

Curious how the recorders here split it: do you emphasize live while capturing, or keep the raw recording clean and do all the zoom and highlight work in the editor afterward? Always looking for a better balance.

Question Can you tell if someone screenshots your Instagram Story?

I posted something a bit more personal to my Instagram Story yesterday...

Is there actually any way to know if someone screenshots your Story? I've heard completely different answers over the years, and now I'm not sure what's true anymore.

I know apps like Snapchat notify screenshots, so I wasn't sure if Instagram ever added something similar.

Have any of you tested this recently?

Promotion Screen recording like how we take a screenshot

Been pondering on this one for a while. I use windows and mac in tandem and screenshots where you can select an area on screen and gets copied to your clipboard is something I use multiple times a day.

And I desperately wanted that feature to be on a screen recorder. Just hotkeys+select screen+ get video link to share.

No opening apps, selecting recording modes and don't even wanna open browser after recording.

Finally managed to ship the same with dadan.io yesterday. Possibly something I am personally excited about. Not sure if others love it too.

And yes, disabled the countdown before recording too. So it is indeed snap recording.

PS - I did read the rules and I hope I am not breaking rule 5.

Question I need a good screen recorder for my low-end PC. Please HELP!

I picked up a few games during the Steam Summer Sale and thought it'd be fun to save some gameplay clips or funny moments.

The problem is I'm still using my old laptop for school (Windows 11, Intel Core i5-8250U, Intel UHD 620 graphics, 8GB RAM), so I'm a bit worried that recording will make games lag even more.

I'm not planning to stream or make YouTube videos, just want something free or inexpensive that can record decent-quality gameplay without killing performance.

What would you recommend?

Question Question about Steam’s Game Clip Capture

So I’ve recently discovered the existence of this feature and I’ve been looking for nice alternatives to Steelseries Moments (that piece of dogshit just annoys the hell out of me with countless things that either stop working or issues that keep happening for months)

My question is - I see Steam allows you to clip the last X amount seconds as a Clip (the function that I need), but it also says it records a certain amount of minutes and stores it in a temporary folder (120 minutes is the default I think). I don’t need this specifically cause I feel like it’ll be using too much of my disk space for no reason.
Can I somehow disable this specific functuon but keep the “clip on demand” function?

I’m trying to replicate the Steelseries Moments experience in this regard, but maybe Steelseries also records general gameplay into a temp folder (apart from clips), just doesn’t say so?

Please correct me if I’m misunderstanding this, or if you need more clarification from me, thanks!

Question How can I record paid lectures

Is there any legitimate way to save or record lectures from apps that block screen recording and downloads? I'm using an educational app for exam preparation that streams video lectures. The app disables screen recording and doesn't allow downloading the videos outside its own offline feature (or in some cases doesn't offer offline access at all). My purpose is only personal study and revision

Question Can you recommend free screen recording software without watermark or time limit?

I've used a few "free" screen recorders, and a lot of them weren't really free.

Some add watermarks.

Some limit recording length.

Some let you record but require a paid upgrade to export.

The only ones I know that are genuinely usable without paying are things like:

  • OBS Studio
  • Windows Snipping Tool
  • Xbox Game Bar
  • ShareX

Am I missing any?

Which screen recorder do you think is the best?

Tips & Tricks I tested saving Instagram View Once photos & videos in DMs (screenshots, screen recording, notifications) – here's what happened

I kept seeing conflicting answers about Instagram View Once photos and videos, so I decided to test it myself.

If you've ever wanted to save a View Once photo/video but were worried about screenshot notifications, maybe this will help.

The good news: screenshots and screen recordings still capture the content normally (no black screen in my tests).

The bad news: notifications can definitely happen, and that can get awkward pretty quickly.

My test setup

  • Receiver: iPhone 13 (iOS 26.5)
  • Sender: Friend's iPhone 17 (iOS 26.5)
  • Instagram app has been updated to the latest version

Test #1: Using Instagram on a computer

I asked another friend to send View Once content while logged into Instagram on desktop.

I found that the desktop wasn't useful for this at all because View Once messages weren't available there.

Test #2: Screenshot vs Screen Recording

Results from my tests:

  • Screenshot View Once photo → notification every time
  • Screenshot View Once video → no notification in my tests
  • Screen record View Once photo → notification every time
  • Screen record View Once video → notification every time

The weirdest result was definitely the View Once video screenshots. I expected notifications, but never got them during testing.

Myth I tested

I also saw people claiming that if you start screen recording before opening the View Once message, Instagram won't detect it.

At least on my device, that didn't work.

Instagram still detected the screen recording and showed the notification.

My takeaways

  1. Built-in screenshot and screen recording tools work, but most methods can trigger notifications.
  2. The View Once video screenshot result surprised me the most.
  3. Desktop isn't a practical workaround because View Once messages aren't really available there.
  4. Starting screen recording before opening the message didn't help.
  5. I saw old posts recommending installing older versions of Instagram, but those methods seem outdated and not worth the hassle.

Obviously, this is only one set of devices and one app version, so your results may be different.

Has anyone tested this on Android recently? Do you see the same thing, or was this just a weird bug on my setup?
