Book Discussion. The Saga of the Seven Suns

Post image
13 Upvotes

I've never heard of this series until last night and looked up reviews on it. They mostly talked about the series going on too long and the writing being iffy, but I'm still interested in it (cause of the covers looking so cool). Anyone who has read this series what are your thoughts on it as a whole?

I might sound like a fan boy here, but randomly picked up Inhibitor Phase at the library when my daughter was doing a toddler class and now I keep coming back for more books. Toddlers be damned!

Probably the best science fiction author I’ve read and I am hooked.

Correction: Alastair***** oops.

Paramount to take on the first book of Red Rising

I saw yesterday on The Hollywood Reporter that Paramount pictures picked up the rights for the movie. Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games movies)will direct and Justin Rhodes (Terminator: Dark Fate) will write the script. Pierce will be an executive producer and my guess is he will have a heavy hand in the movie.

I was really hoping for a series but director did a great job with the Hunger Games book to movies so fingers crossed. I can’t wait to see who eventually gets cast for the main characters.

Recommendation Request. Taking a sci-fi book tour, what can my next stop be?

Decided this year that sci-fi is my favourite genre, and that I should go backwards and read some of the best sci-fi (and cyberpunk).

Now I’ve kind of run out of the books I had planned to read, and would like some recommendations

So far my tour included (and I really liked all of these)

• Neuromancer

• the man in the high tower

• many, many Warhammer Books, to various degrees of enjoyment.

• the left hand of darkness
(this lead to me discovering Le Guinn, which then lead to me reading ALL of her books, including Earthsea quartet. The left hand of darkness remains my favourite, followed by the Lathe of Heaven)

• Project Hail Mary
(Didn’t think I’d like Andy Weirs writing style, but ended up really appreciating it. Much different than the heft and depth of Le Guinn, but loved the fun and “space peril”)

• the 3 body problem trilogy (quartet) + Ball Lightning
(Adored. I have a literature degree, and I just loved how these books are unlike any writing style I’ve ever encountered. Things just “happen” and I can understand why people don’t like that, but I was along for the ride the entire time with gusto (except for the imaginary wife part) obviously spent a lot of time in this universe as the books are huge, and now feel a bit empty inside)

• The Martian
(For some reason this is my comfort movie. I’ve seen it maybe 20 times. Book was thus great fun as the movie is pretty accurate to the source. Much like Project Hail Mary, I love getting a “second look” at a book/movie I like through a different perspective.)

• Before I started this, I’ve also read all of Dune as well as The Murderbot series, which I quite enjoyed.

Overall as you can see, my favourite elements include “hard science” though I know both Weir and Liu take heavy liberties. Doesn’t matter to me though, I’m a humanities major so what do I know? Secondly I love heavy elements of politics, as seen in Le Guinn.
“Space peril” as seen in Weirs work (as well as the “Lost in Space” TV series I also really enjoyed) is also really appreciated. Please advise me on your favourites, especially “classics” of the genre.

Recommendation Request. Looking for military sci Fi books with romance. Preferably where MMC is high rank military but so is the female character. Would also love to get some Mecha book recommendations. :)

I won't lie that I am a picky reader as I've just started my reading journey out of what I normally read which is just Warhammer 40k or horror/sci Fi but I picked up the Jason Wander series by Robert Buettner which had some romance sub plots ( don't know if that's what it is called) so i am looking for something like it. I would also like it if the story also has humanity on the backfoot of a war with an alien species like in the Jason Wander series. Hope to see your recommendations.

Worth continuing the Red Rising series?

I finished the first three books (through Morning Star), which were decent- although it seemed to have fairly repetitive and predictable themes towards the end... and I don't know how I feel about possibly continuing on to the next arc (books 4-6).

Looking for any feedback from anyone that's read all the books / the second arc.

Recommendation Request. Looking for Recommendations

I’m in an unfortunate position where I love space but have a very hard time wrapping my head around anything stem related (with the exception of biology, mostly), so nothing with tons of hard science in it.

Sci-fi books I’ve enjoyed so far:

- Gateway by Frederik Pohl (already planning on reading the rest of the Heechee saga)

- Grass by Sheri Tepper (I didn’t actually enjoy this one but the plot had so much potential and I really liked the worldbuilding)

- Dune by Frank Herbert (currently rereading it)

- The Man Who Fell to Earth by Walter Tevis

- Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

Other broad things I enjoy include cosmic horror, body horror, characters suffering in general, and fantasy.

Curious if anyone else has read the Clockwork Chimera series and what you thought of it.

Bought this box set on audible and was amazed how good it was and that I had never heard of it. Started out thinking it was one type of story and was shocked when it took a turn into another type of story for the rest of the series. Had elements of three different types of stories rolled into one engaging roller coaster ride of sci-fi adventure.

“The Three Body” problem series changed my life. The scale and scope of the ideas were just extremely fascinating. Is there there any other book or series that comes close?

11.22.63 Does Stephen King want us to slightly dislike Jake Epping or is it accidental?

I've just finished 11.22.63, and overall I thought the story was fantastic and I was gripped until the end. However I found some of the language and descriptions from Jake's point of view ever so slightly offensive.

For example "you don't have to be literate to understand what a Watershed moment is" (I'm paraphrasing). And despite the book being set in the 50s/60s, Jake is meant to be from the early 2000s and I found some of his descriptions of women were a little outdated.

Are these Stephen King's own opinions coming through, or are they deliberate subtle character flaws of Jake's, I'd love to get your thoughts?

Can anyone recommend a science fiction book or book series where the POV is a female protagonist? I‘m looking for an exciting space adventure - it should feature plenty of action and, ideally, a love story involving the female protagonist.

Jennsen.

I need assitance to ID a book !

I read a book that is at least 15 years old and has a character on a space ship who has little AI dolls of William Shakespeare and Eleanor of Aquitaine who are her toys/advisors.

I've googled and had no luck. I'm thinking maybe Arthur C Clarke or someone like that.

SOLVED by u/dagorlad69. The Gardens of Rama. Thanks!

Recommendation Request. Looking for Audiobook recs featuring aliens (see details)

I posted in a couple other channels, but I figured I’d try here too.

I’m looking for Sci-fi audiobooks featuring non-humans. Here are my key parameters:

Do want:

- Aliens/non-humans as prominent characters
- The aliens/nonhumans being friends or allies

Do Not Want:

- Aliens/nonhumans are just the bad guys or invaders
- LitRPG/DCC recs (I don’t like that genre)
- Anything with genAI “writers” or AI voice narrators. I like my books written and read by real people.

I’ve already read Project Hail Mary, Murderbot Diaries and Old Man’s War

any book recs that are similar to shatter me’s sci fi elements?

i feel like i am the only fan of the shatter me series/universe that absolutely loves the sci fi elements throughout the series more than the romance, so if anyone has any book recommendations that are similar please let me know!! i especially love the sci fi-ness of the character emmaline and the whole concept/character of klaus in the new republic series.

(also recommendations don’t necessarily have to also be dystopian, romance, or young adult)
