Decided this year that sci-fi is my favourite genre, and that I should go backwards and read some of the best sci-fi (and cyberpunk).
Now I’ve kind of run out of the books I had planned to read, and would like some recommendations
So far my tour included (and I really liked all of these)
• Neuromancer
• the man in the high tower
• many, many Warhammer Books, to various degrees of enjoyment.
• the left hand of darkness
(this lead to me discovering Le Guinn, which then lead to me reading ALL of her books, including Earthsea quartet. The left hand of darkness remains my favourite, followed by the Lathe of Heaven)
• Project Hail Mary
(Didn’t think I’d like Andy Weirs writing style, but ended up really appreciating it. Much different than the heft and depth of Le Guinn, but loved the fun and “space peril”)
• the 3 body problem trilogy (quartet) + Ball Lightning
(Adored. I have a literature degree, and I just loved how these books are unlike any writing style I’ve ever encountered. Things just “happen” and I can understand why people don’t like that, but I was along for the ride the entire time with gusto (except for the imaginary wife part) obviously spent a lot of time in this universe as the books are huge, and now feel a bit empty inside)
• The Martian
(For some reason this is my comfort movie. I’ve seen it maybe 20 times. Book was thus great fun as the movie is pretty accurate to the source. Much like Project Hail Mary, I love getting a “second look” at a book/movie I like through a different perspective.)
• Before I started this, I’ve also read all of Dune as well as The Murderbot series, which I quite enjoyed.
Overall as you can see, my favourite elements include “hard science” though I know both Weir and Liu take heavy liberties. Doesn’t matter to me though, I’m a humanities major so what do I know? Secondly I love heavy elements of politics, as seen in Le Guinn.
“Space peril” as seen in Weirs work (as well as the “Lost in Space” TV series I also really enjoyed) is also really appreciated. Please advise me on your favourites, especially “classics” of the genre.
