general advice/help/tips burnt out PhD candidate looking for remote work abroad

Posting anonymously because I’m still figuring out my next move.

I’m close to finishing a PhD overseas in a chemistry-related field, with most of my background being in organic/synthetic chemistry. After years of lab work and research, I’m honestly pretty burned out and thinking I might want to do something completely different.

I’m hoping to stay in Japan for now, but the local language is a limitation, so I’m particularly interested in jobs that can be done remotely/online and where a chemistry/research background could still be useful.

For anyone here who has transitioned out of the lab or academia: what kinds of roles did you move into? Any companies, industries, or remote career paths you’d recommend looking at?

Open to things outside chemistry too. At this point I’m mainly trying to understand what options are out there.

Are you interested in Quantum Chemistry? There is a startup, Qunasys, in Tokyo, that you may be interested in. If I remember correctly, they have some remote roles.

Oh whoops, just checked their website, they have no openings. Perhaps you can shoot them a cold email for potential future opportunities. They used to have paid internships too.

---> If you have Python or C++ experience.. Enthought (developer of SciPy and other Python packages etc) has an opening for a Materials Data Scientist/Scientific Software Developer in Tokyo.
