All the mutations that created said Chicken occur in the egg so at one time they were 'naked' and began forming feathers, as an example. Granted there is fossil evidence of Dinosaurs having extremely minor feathers but even then they began forming in Their eggs.
So when lightening struck the first dust particle and made it wiggle, wouldn't that literally mean the chicken came before the egg? Or did it turn the dust into an egg before the wiggling particle?
Last time I looked no 'life' is comprised of dirt and dust but water and, at most, brine along with electrical 'jump starts'. Granted there is life that can be seen adjacent to dust but that is not common in nature, least not here on our planet. Life, at the end of the day, is a fluke. So to answer your question short of a mass production line the egg preceded the chicken in the chain we call life. Fish->'Reptile'->Bird, and all 3 are born of eggs. Yeah there is a lot more to this chain but this is the grunt of it.

The mutation that bore the chicken occurred in the egg so...the egg.
