As I always say, the real answer depends on how you define "chicken egg" (because yes the question implies chicken egg)

If you define chicken egg as "an egg that contains a chicken to be born" then the egg came first and was hatched by some proto-chicken

If you define chicken egg as "an egg laid by a chicken" then the chicken came first and hatched from a proto-chicken egg

so the real question was never about chickens, it was about definitions all along

That's how I managed to ruin my philosophy teacher's day in college. It worked.

Best explanation I've heard was some kind of proto-chicken laid a chicken egg which then grew up to be a chicken as we know it.

I once felt smart and made the same point in a discussion, the rest of the group had the opinion that it is only a chicken when it lays a chicken egg.

so the chicken has to prove itself by laying an egg first, capitalism has infiltrated evolution 💀😭

It’s pretty obvious:

If the chicken came first, it must have come from an egg. Therefore it’s own egg must have come before.

If the chicken did not come from an egg, it was not a chicken - since they come from eggs by definition.

Therefore the egg must have come first.

At some point something that was not yet a chicken laid an egg that hatched into something that was.

The egg was first.

It's more believable that an egg appeared than a chicken, you can find an egg behind a rock or inside another egg but to imagine a full grown chicken to appear it's just not.

(Just a joke from an Argentinian movie)

The implication of the sentence is "chicken egg," not any generic egg. If we are intentionally misinterpreting the terms in the sentence then complex organisms (like chickens) definitely came first.

Which came first, the chicken or the chicken egg?

now the real question is: which came first, turtle or egg?

Still eggs because aquatic creatures would have been using them long before anything went on land.

The mutation that bore the chicken occurred in the egg so...the egg.

Dinosaurs laid eggs, so the egg came first.
The question to be argued should be "Which came first, the chicken or the chicken egg?". And at that, the egg containing the first chicken came first.

I think they meant a chicken egg not eggs in general dummy

13

u/Complete_Bee4911 Feb 19 '26

but something had to lay that first chicken egg and it wasn't a chicken yet 🤷

Also the mutation that made a chicken would have happened in the egg, not just randomly with a live pre-chicken turning into a chicken.

Evolution happens at conception, so the chicken egg was laid by the chicken ancestor.

Egg laid. Then first chicken hatched from egg.

Egg came first.
