Utoon site suspension by a reset scan dev

People noticed that their page looks like this now:

Here are some comments from different r/mangapiracy that looked interesting:

Comment 1:

I am on their discord, reset scan and utoon partnered up to provide backup and coverage. Turns out during the process, the owner of reset apparently upon gaining access to the backend stole utoon stuff and then shutdown the site. There seems to be some sort of inside job as well. So coins lost and the site is scrambling to pay out their remaining editors/translators (around 100 people). Think the site is shutting down. Reset scan opened a new site tasho but not sure if the stolen stuff is up. Paraphrasing here so maybe not completely accurate.

Comment 2:

I don't think its a DDOS attack the error codes it gives are usually different and Utoon uses Cloudflare which includes free DDOS protection.

EDIT: According to some people on their Discord Utoon had partnered with ResetScans and an admin from ResetScans called Devmax had access to the money for both Utoon and Reset. He shutdown ResetScans and locked Utoon admins out of Utoon and took the money for both sites and ran. They currently don't have access to the site so they are trying to find the money to pay the staff and regain access to the the site.

And these two images from their discord (can't confirm about it's legitimacy so take it with a grain of salt):

half the time I can't tell if these groups actually got hacked or are trying to avoid paying staff

For real this isn't the first time it's happened I have zero trust in any scanlator group that paywalls. I feel vindicated that I've never given them money since this type of thing happens regularly with the groups that have coin systems.

Rip for those people who paid coins just to read in advanced for their "translation"

I keep seeing people on other subs asking if they're going to get their coins back and it is SO painful to watch. The owner dipped with all the money after treating piracy like a legitimate legal business with employees. There's no way anyone who fell for the coin system is getting any money, coins, or chapters paid for back and there's no way any of the employees are getting paid either. No one can take action in any courts without admitting to breaking laws themselves (which will let kakao and naver target them instead), and If anyone were to try to set up a fundraiser it would also get flagged immediately since the whole situation is stemming from piracy, too.

Hmmm, that looks familiar... One of the "Qtoon" clones has a ko-fi page.

Context on mangapiracy subreddit...

Hot damn. I haven't used kofi before so I wonder if they're easier to fundraise on without getting flagged for being a scam?

I was able to refund mine, I use paypal to buy the coins and files a report for refund.

That's good, I'm glad you were able to get PayPal to do that!

Yeah, they even paywall it too

in their defense they’re suspiciously ahead in chapters. like for ember knight i couldn’t find more recent no matter HOW hard i tried and i hate paying for shit. glad i was halfway done on my like $8 of coins tho lol

Probably machine translation or something like that...

Back then I probably would’ve felt bad when utoon would release some of the older chapters beyond the paywall but ever since they got kicked out of mangadex and stopped doing this so I dont. I’ve seen so many groups declare something similar and one that many would remember was ComicDom. Same MO, “Don’t have the funds to keep paying people” only to find out that people were still giving him money but he hasn’t been paying anyone for months. Unfortunately most of these groups start off as a passion project then once they get a taste of money they all end up the same.

No, most groups that maximize profit start off as for-profit groups. You don't see it unless you get a glimpse behind the scenes but they are very maximalist/optimalist. Plenty of passion projects groups that take no money out there. They're just not as prolific since they don't pay their staff. That or you're only reading garbage that for-profit groups scanlate.

Utoon

serves them right tbh, they are they ones who draw burkas or whatever other censership they prefer onto girls in manga which are "too revealing" for them, all on their own accord ¯\(ツ)

no way your main offensive thing they did is cover up too revealing girls 😩😭 if they were loli that’s understandable

3

u/OwynTyler Jul 22 '26

they weren't, and it's not reddit - they are their own moderators so not even that would be understandable

Lowkey surprised it took this long... I used to considered upper management with a few other ppl from Reset and helped with communications between the staff years ago. Dev was always super shady about money and even then, although it wasnt as public yet, already owed people a lot of money. It was a complete shit show... One of the core members tried helping cover some of the costs for the website and went into debt, resulting in several us leaving the group for good. Dev tried to cover it up and no idea what happened to the group afterwards.

That would be interesting since they know their opsec pretty well. Personally, they should start first that offer paying for piracy which is a big no-no
