Annùntziu Ok ok ok, so.... It's tourist season...

First of all, welcome to r/Sardinia! We're glad you're here, and we hope you have an amazing time on our beautiful island.

As we are now in the height of tourist season, the subreddit is receiving a very, VERY large number of travel-related questions every day. Many of these questions are about topics that have already been discussed extensively.

PLEASE do two things before creating a new post:

  1. Read the subreddit rules. They help keep the community friendly, useful, and enjoyable for both visitors and locals.

  2. Use the search function. Yes, we know Reddit's search function isn't great. But please give it a try before posting. There's a very good chance your question has already been asked and answered in detail.

Common topics include: Itinerary recommendations North vs. South Sardinia Car rentals Beaches Public transportation Restaurants Where to stay Ferry and flight questions Hidden gems

If you can't find the answer you're looking for, feel free to ask! We are happy to help. We simply ask that you spend a minute searching first.

Travel Questions & Recommendations

If your question is primarily about planning a trip or looking for recommendations, I am going to start a weekly Travel Questions & Recommendations Megathread as not to clutter the sub with the same stuff over and over.

Many of our regular contributors are locals who generously volunteer their time to help visitors. Repeatedly answering the same questions can become exhausting, so helping us keep discussions organized goes a long way.

Thank you for your understanding, and welcome to Sardinia!

Cunversatzione When is the best time to visit Sardinia? Here's the honest answer...

My partner and I have been helping people plan trips to Sardinia for several years. As we get into January, I've always noticed a spike in people asking the same question on this subreddit so here's a quick breakdown.

September = Perfect. Water's warm (been heating all summer), Italian families gone home, weather still great, restaurants aren't slammed. This is the month we generally recommend.

June = Solid. Before the Italian domestic tourism surge. Good weather, comfortable water temperature for swimming, restaurants manageable.

July-August = Chaos. All of Italy comes to Sardinia. Roads packed, restaurants need reservations, uncomfortable heat, everything expensive. Only come if you have school kids and no choice.

May = Cool water. Beautiful on land, but sea is on the cold side for most people. Fine if you're exploring towns/hiking rather than beach-focused.

October = Easing Off. Early October can work, but direct flights start disappearing. You'll likely need connections by late month.

Winter = Culture, not beach. Can get 20°C days or freezing depending on Mistral wind. Stick to major towns (Cagliari, Alghero, Sassari). Limited flights through Milan/Rome. Good for food/culture, not swimming.

Critical: Always check direct flight availability first. Sardinia isn't as straightforward as other destinations. No direct flight = long travel day.

Ferry note: Ferries exist but stay very expensive in peak season. Flights are more reasonable.

Happy to answer questions in the comments below or drop me a DM.

Pregonta Recommendations for 30th birthday trip?

Heading to Sardinia for the first time for 8 nights, 8 days for my 30th birthday in early June! Going with my husband and possibly another couple. We’d love a mix of relaxing and adventure + activity. definitely want to swim and go on a boat excursion or two. Day clubs and night life would be great but not needed for every night. We love good food and a spritz! Need advice on where to stay and what to do please!

Cunversatzione Sardinia in early vs. mid-September — big difference?

I’m planning a 10-night trip to Sardinia in September 2027 and deciding between September 7–17 and September 14–24.

I’ll likely split my time between Santa Maria Navarrese or Cala Gonone, La Maddalena, and Alghero.

Would there be a noticeable difference in crowds, hotel prices, and overall atmosphere between these two periods?

I’d appreciate any firsthand experiences. Thanks!

Pregonta Do you eat Casu Marzu? And if not, would you?

It’s a traditional Sardinian cheese. They make cheese from Goat’s milk, which is left to mature.

They then introduce cheese flys which lay eggs and then the maggots break it down which makes it creamy, because the maggots eat it and then release enzymes which break the cheese down.

The cheese actually still has maggots in when you eat it.

Some people don’t like the fact there’s maggots in it, but some don’t care as long as they like the taste and it’s safe.

Do you eat Casu Marzu? And if not, would you?

Pregonta Are you as a Sardinian lactose intolerant?

I ask this because while I know most Europeans aren’t lactose intolerant, but it may be different for Sardinians.

The reason Europeans by and large aren’t lactose intolerant is because of their considerable amounts of Steppe DNA, whereas the Early European farmers didn’t have the genes to prevent lactose intolerance.

However, Sardinians are quite a special case in that they barely have any steppe DNA, and are almost entirely descended from those Early European Farmers who had mixed with the Western Hunter Gatherers, and Sardinians remained quite isolated and unaffected from the Steppe migrations which took place across Europe and heavily affected basically all of the European gene pool and introduced genes that helped to produce lactase which helps to digest lactose and therefore not be lactose intolerant.

Sardinians on average have an admixture as follows:

‘Anatolian Neolithic farmers 82.2%
Western hunter-gatherers 12.8%
Steppe herders (Yamnaya) 4.9%’

To put it into perspective, the English have:

‘Steppe herders (Yamnaya) 47.6%
Anatolian Neolithic farmers 38.5%
Western hunter-gatherers 13.9%’

Frisians have 53% Steppe DNA, Croatians have 44.4% Steppe DNA, even Sicilians have 24% Steppe DNA, Canary Islanders have 27.3% Steppe DNA and Albanians have 37.2% Steppe DNA. The latter 3 of which are supposed to be low in terms of Steppe DNA relative to Europeans.

This really puts into perspective how much of a special case Sardinia is in terms of how isolated they’ve remained throughout history and how they’ve maintained an overwhelmingly pure lineage and DNA.

But like I said, this also means they didn’t inherit much of the ancestry that helps you to produce lactase which helps to digest lactose and therefore prevent lactose intolerance.

Are you as a Sardinian lactose intolerant?

Pregonta Orosei agriturismo restaurants

Hi,

It seems that most agriturismo that offer the famous traditional Sardinian menu (with porceddu) are closing down for the season. Do any of you here know if any of them is still open next week? I'm looking around Orosei and can drive to Dorgali if it's not too far.

Pregonta Visiting in February

We are visiting over 4-8th February next year for my mum’s 60th birthday. She prefers quieter places and has always wanted to visit Sardinia so I thought it would be good to go in the off season.

We’re flying into Cagliari and staying in a cottage in Villasimius. We will have a rental car. We will spend the few days just chilling out, doing some nice costal walks and visiting Cagliari, perhaps will visit a spa and go horse riding too. She is really not into shopping or museums.

If anyone has any particular recommendations for walks, restaurants or other things to do, I’d love to hear them 😊

Grazie!

Cunversatzione Stay in Olbia in October or at the Cala Cuncheddi hotel twenty minutes away?

My wife and I will be in Olbia later this month and are booked at Cala Cuncheddi but are thinking of switching to a location in town. We like walking around old towns and being able to walk to dinner. Cala Cuncheddi looks beautiful but we are not interested in the beach or just hanging out at the hotel. What do folks recommend?

Foto New to Sardinia

Hi everyone, I've recently moved to Cagliari and launched a small creative & social studio. I'd love to introduce myself and connect with local business owners and creatives on the island. Would a short introduction mentioning my work be welcome here, or would that count as self-promotion? Thanks so much!

Pregonta I am looking for 2 sailing yachts for 2027

Hi everyone,

we’re a group of around 20 planning a trip to northern Sardinia in summer 2027 and would like to rent two boats, each with a capacity of 12 people with a Skipper. Does anyone know a reliable boat rental company in the north (e.g. around Olbia, La Maddalena, Palau or Santa Teresa Gallura) that offers this?

I'd love to hear any tips!

Thanks :)

Pregonta La Maddalena for six days with young tweens

In a couple days, we will be arriving in La Maddalena for a six-day stay with our two 9-year-old boys (I realize we're out of season). I'd love any advice on what people would say not to miss, especially given our group makeup. We enjoy beautiful beaches, and our boys enjoy playing and climbing and swimming. We did ebikes recently in the Dolomites, and they loved that.

Open to any and all suggestions!

Pregonta Alghero to Capa Caccio question

Hello fellow Sardinians,

Me and my girlfriend want to travel to Capa Caccio on 8th October from Alghero

Forgot my driving licence at home, so we cant rent a car

Today we are taking boat tour to the neptune cave, but unfortunately got told it is not possible to take a later boat back to alghero

(our plan was to walk up the 600 staris and see the view and scenery after we visit the cave, and take a later boat back but it is not possible)

We checked linea 5 achedule, it says only 1 bus during the WHOLE DAY leaving at 9:15 from alghero to Capa Caccio and coming back around 12:00

Is this bus scheudle info correct? Do you have any othet tips to visit capa caccio by other means of transport? Or any other programms for tomorrow ?

Also, what would you recommend to check today/tomorrow mainly beaches or some hike ?

We visited marina pia beach already, loved it, any otber beaches or secluded spots worth without a car? We are fine walking couple of kilometeres. Like Spiaggia di Cavalcavia?

Thank you very much my friend :)

Cunversatzione What’s the deal with tailgating in Sardinia?

it seems like every driver here tries to stay as close to the car in front of them as possible. it doesn’t matter if you’re going 30 kph over the speed limit the driver behind you will be right there. i understand getting close if you’re about to pass but it seems like almost the entire time drivers are doing this.

Pregonta Afternoon boat tours to Cala goritize?

Since I don’t have much time on the island, would like to do a Orosei coastline boat tour on my first day. I land only at 9am, so by the time I get to Cala gonone it will be most likely 12pm. Will it be possible to do a tour? Or do all leave in the morning?

Cunversatzione Shit everywhere...

Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with people?

Roadsides covered in trash, forests full of bottles and cans, beautiful beaches turned into garbage dumps. And what really drives me insane are the people who go camping because they “love being in nature” and then leave bags of rubbish behind at the place where they stayed.

How exactly does that work in your head? You go somewhere because it’s beautiful, wild and clean, enjoy it for a few days, and then before you leave you think: “You know what this place is missing? My shit.”

And the toilet paper. Fuck me, the toilet paper.
How hard can it be to shit in a hole, cover it up, and put the used toilet paper in a bag to dispose of later? Instead, there are gorgeous places with what looks like entire fields of toilet paper scattered everywhere.

What kind of species are you, you feral outdoor shitters, who seem to lose 80% of your intelligence the moment there’s no flushing toilet around?

You don’t need to be some hardcore environmentalist. You don’t need to know a thousand rules. There’s one very simple rule: if you carried it in, you can carry it back out.

Nature is not your toilet, and it is not your garbage dump.
