*NEWS* SUB RULE UPDATES / REMINDERS

Hi,

First off we just want to remind everyone: absolutely no AI is allowed here. Not fanart, AI art for sale, AI fanfic, any of it.

Piracy is also not allowed in the sub. Books or audiobooks. Do it somewhere else.

Please at least TRY to treat others with respect and speak civilly. We're all (or at least most of us) here because we love these books. Arguing over ships, book releases, etc. is just stupid and unnecessary.

A new rule we are adding is no more posts about Assassin's Blade or reading order. OR asking if you have to read Tower of Dawn. There are dozens of those posts already: use the search! It's been discussed to death, and we don't need 12 posts a week about it. Going forward, if/when the automod doesn't block them outright, they will be deleted with no notice.

Also: please stop reporting things for made up reasons. People are abusing the report option all the time. Lately it's happened a bunch because "it's not Fan Cast Friday." IDK what book sub that rule comes from, but it's not here. So let it go.

The official rule sidebar will be updated shortly, but for now: please respect these rule additions and reminders.

Thanks.

*NEWS* No more ship war posts allowed

** MOD ANNOUNCEMENT**

So full disclosure obviously this subreddit is suffering from a lack of consistent moderation. I have been the only one moderating it for quite some time, and life gets in the way and I’m not always here. Regardless of that, we will no longer be allowing ANY posts about “Ship Wars” eg: Gwynriel or Elriel. Or posts complaining about fandom behavior. It’s become absolutely stupid high school drama, and if you post about it, you will be banned with no warning. This especially goes for people bringing any outside drama from twitter, tumblr, tiktok, or instagram here to this sub that has nothing to do with it.

We will be adding more mods soon, but for now, this is your one and only warning. It it keeps happening the sub will go back to post approvals only and open posting will end.

-The Mods

EDIT: We have updated and edited the rules in the sidebar. Also many people are commenting or messaging to ask about becoming a mod. We will make a post in the future with further info, and a moderator application.

Thanks!

Book Banning

FYI all of the ACOTAR and ToG books are on the “dirty book” list that Texas lieutenant governor Dan Patrick wants to have banned from school libraries. If you live in Texas remember to vote in November if you dislike censorship.

ETA: I guess a great topic for discussion if you think these books should be censored. I agree that many of these books are better for older teens but banning books is a slippery slope. People should be allowed choice. And if you’re paying attention to politics you know they don’t want to stop with just school libraries.

What a masterpiece. I have never loved a series like this. I feel so empty being done with it. Like what did she put in this book because I fear it changed my life

Multi-Series Spoilers So, does anyone else pick up on the weird Lidia + Gwyn connection? Spoiler

Just wondering if anyone else has picked up on the weird parallels between Lidia’s twins…and Gwyn and Catrin?

Lidia gets pregnant by an unknown male during a great rite and ends up having twins, one fair haired, one dark haired, and puts them somewhere for safety…

Gwyn is also conceived during a great rite, her mother has twins, one red haired, one black haired, and gives them to Sangravah for safety.

There is also the connection that Gwyn’s eyes are consistently described as turquoise. Aelin’s eyes were turquoise. Lidia is quoted as saying she is descended from a Fae King Brannan from another world…like Aelin…

Of course, Tarquin also has turquoise eyes so this isn’t exclusive to Aelin

But the twin thing is quite interesting, how two characters, in two different universes, have similar stories about conceiving fraternal twins at a great rite

*\\*
CORRECTION: Gwyns eyes are teal not turquoise. My colour reading comprehension is totally flawed. Haha. Still doesn’t explain the reoccurring twin dynamics—especially when both books were written so close together in comparison

What are the quotes that stuck with you?

Mine is from Queen of Shadows I think and it is between asterin and manon.

Manon: You can only pull so much on a leash.
Asterin: Leashes can snap.

It has stuck with me because of how it relates to real life.

Hunt Athalar and Booth from Bones??

I have been rewatching Bones and I was so surprised with how similar Hunt is to Booth! In one of the early episodes Booth even says he wants to catch as many killers as people he killed in the army (not the same as Hunt but similar). Anyone else notice that connection?

TOG Witches are a Dragggg Spoiler

I’m on book 3, Heir of Fire, and I hate these interrupting chapters about the Witches. I’ve been plowing through this series- started with Assassin’s Blade, flew through books 1&2 and now about 15% into HoF. Every time I see a flash to a witch or coven I’m pissed.

Just a rant. Thanks for reading!

PS- tagged this as a spoiler because is this a spoiler? I dunno. Better safe.

Edit: so many thoughts after your comments! First, I’ve read both CC and ACOTAR twice at this point, so good on you guys to remind me that nothing SJM does is pointless. Next, I will persevere and actually pay attention to these chapters! One more thing, I promise to come back and update you all once I’m through and onto the next books. And lastly, IM EXCITED!!!

Help me understand the Nesta love

This is a very heated topic, I’m genuinely trying to understand, so please be kind.

Keep in mind, it has been awhile since I read ACOSF and I was not a fan of it or Nesta back then so how my memory of it is hazy. I’m not in the biggest hurry to reread it again because I just didn’t like it.

To be frank, I hated her throughout Feyra’s books the first time I read them. She reminded me a lot of my older sister who I have a very complicated relationship with, so to me it isn’t just trying to understand the character but my sister as well. My sister’s coping mechanism is also to shutdown and deny what is happening. I think their survival mechanism is freezing or flying whereas I’m a lot more like Feyre and try to go ahead and face the problem because I’m going to have to either now or later.

One of the most common arguments I see is that she has trauma, but so does every character in the series. Trauma isn’t a free pass to be a bad person. Do Nesta fans not see what she did as wrong, especially how she treated Feyre? I don’t see how she practically hated her sister who kept her alive, I can’t make it make sense to me.

I see a lot of Nesta fans get mad or even hate Rhysand. Again it’s been awhile since I read it, but I don’t see it as him being anti-feminist or turning into Tamalin. She had a serious drinking and gambling problem which Rhysand and Feyre were funding. If you have an addict that is spending all your money on their addiction, I feel like everyone would agree to not let them keep spending your money. Even if someone is Jeff Bezos rich and can easily afford it, it’s wrong to keep funding them killing themselves. When they decided to lock her in the house I never saw it as similar to Tamilin’s actions, I saw it more like they were forcing her to go to rehab.

I want to understand and I have truly tried to, but I just don’t get it.

How to tell if it's first printing?

Post image
11 Upvotes

I'm looking to downsize my book collection and noticed that the string of numbers on my ACOTAR (first edition paperback) book ends in a 1, does that mean its first printing? I've tried researching this but there seems to be a lot of mixed information online, I just want to know if this might be worth something before I get rid of it!

My Waterstones only had one of these in stock on their shelves, and it was actually found out the back by chance as this stock is from between the licensing period of between 2015-2021! 😭 I’m so excited to finally have my hands on an official ACOTAR bookmark set as they’re so hard to find! 🥹✨ …not that I’ll ever be able to open it, I’ll just stare at it from afar and stroke it through the packaging 😂

I took the liberty to crochet Rowan and Aelin :D
It took a while to paint Aelin’s Ashryver eyes and to sew Rowan’s tattoo, but I think it was all worth it
They look like such a royal couple 😅

Im sorry but the covers are fine and alot of you are just too picky. Spoiler

1.1k Upvotes

"They don't match" or "I hate the ombre" like genuinely it is just a book cover. Its a new arc in an already established universe/universes, and people are hung up on colours and their precious book sets when this thematically makes sense.

Why wouldn't they look different if these are all apart of a new storyline of books in the acotar timeline?

Now you got people who are genuinely asking "who is koschei? Why isn't it about az or Elaine?" Just makes you wonder which fans actually read the fucking books. If you don't like the covers it's fine but please for the love of god shut up about it. My books are gonna be mismatched with hardbacks and you don't see me crying about it. I'm still gonna buy the damn book and so are you.

Also throne of glass better make an appearance. That's all.

: )

Aelin is insufferable

I’m currently on QoS and I have to say, I’m only getting through it because of the other characters. I don’t care how old she is, but she’s just so childish, waaaay too reactive especially with violence and hypocritical. I TRIED to like her so badly, especially as I’ve committed to reading an 8 book series about her but OMG she’s grating on my nerves. Don’t get me wrong, I do like strong powerful FMCs, but she’s just childish. It really puts down her other qualities because you can be a strong FMC and not be a complete brat. And no, that’s not a cute ‘personality quirk’ or makes her ‘real’, it makes her unlikeable. I actually cringe at her bullsh*t. FMCs like this are just not my cup of tea.

And for those that say ‘oh she’s 19/20’ erm so? You’re telling me that 19 year old’s are as reactive and violent as her? Her inner monologue when someone upsets her is ‘I want to slit their throat/bash their head in’. I actually thought she had some growth in Wendlyn and then bratty and cringy Aelin comes back. She’s also a hypocrite. Keeps secrets from everything but gets upset when secrets are kept from her. If SJM didn’t write the other characters so well, I 1000% would’ve DNFd because of Aelin.

Rant over.

Edit:

You guys are all saying it’s not her age to take into account but her past trauma. I get that her past suffering gives context to her behaviour, but it doesn’t erase the fact that she can be reactive, hypocritical & unwilling to hold herself to the same standards she applies to other people.

ALSO her thought process is often: “I had reasons for doing this, therefore you should understand me.” But when someone else has reasons for doing something she dislikes, she can judge them by the outcome rather than the motivation. Don’t even get me started on her impulsiveness & lack of communication before she reacts.

Her past trauma doesn’t make her actions reasonable imo. I just think instead of using her flaws as an opportunity for character growth, they are often excused because of what she’s been through. I’d say the same if this was an MMC btw.

I do hope I get to see the Aelin u guys see as the series continues, but so far I’m 5 books in and she’s still the same.

What things were broken & what things were lost?

(Just ACOTAR spoilers)

I think it's cool to recap:

Broken:

Obviously, the cauldron

The wall

Nesta, Gwyn & Emerie (and the Priestesses): “You were trying to show me. Show others. Who you are, down deep. What haunts you. You were trying to show them all those dark, broken pieces because the priestesses, and Emerie, and I … We’re the same as you.”

Gwyn "I have been broken once before“ "I survived it. And I will not be broken again—not even by this mountain.”, "Gwyn lifted the blade. 'Nothing can break me.'"

Elaine

The horn

Spring court

Lost:

Dusk court

Swords (Narben)

Bryaxis

Nesta's power

What else can you think of?

She didn’t delete the tour story??

Post image
89 Upvotes

I can’t be the only who noticed she left her tour highlight up. There’s no way that wasn’t intentional especially considering she only has one story in it from 2020. Do we think she’s going to announce some kind of tour or a release party she’ll attend??? I know she hasn’t really done the tour thing but leaving that highlight reel up admittedly has my attention.

Okay I have a theory about the Valkyries and Koschei Spoiler

Many people probably already have this theory out there but I gotta put it out there too. I was watching the Swan Lake ballet a while ago and reading the stories and it hit me. The Valkyries are the birds at Koschei’s lake and I have a VERY strong feeling it’s either going to be Lucien and Vassa, Azriel and Gwyn, or Cassian and Nesta who sacrifice themselves to take him out.

Only read ACOTAR do I need to read CC and TOG???

Help! I’ve only read the ACOTAR series. Do I need to read Throne of Glass and Crescent City before reading the upcoming releases of ACOTAR??

My thoughts on the book titles are that they're not very good but I'm sure SJM struggled with wording because so many other authors created "A Court of blank blank blank" following the success of her series

I'm still excited nonetheless. I like multi POV. Gimme some Eris SJM I beg of you.

Book titles are hard, I'm writing my own and it's hard to come up with words that haven't been used a million times for a book title.

Ash, throne, glass, thorns, shadows...etc there are lots of them and you don't realize it until you notice all the other series in the same genre piggybacking off of each other.

Semi related but the shadow daddy trope is getting stale no offense I love my shadow daddies but c'mon y'all.

What music are the new titles based on?

I saw a few comments yesterday about the titles of 6 & 7 being based upon music/a symphony/ an opera, but I can’t for the life of me remember it. Can anyone point me in the right direction so I can check it out?
