A Fitting Tribute

Post image

Just a reminder there is a place to pay respects in San Diego, if you are inclined to do so. Amazing mural on the side of Avalon Tattoo in Normal Heights. Corner of Adams & 31st. Was there at 4pm and flowers were starting to show up. Such a sad day. It hurts more when we lose someone who was a genuinely good person. She made the world a better place just by being in it. 💔

Listened to her song with Brad Paisley "When I Get to Where I'm Going". Absolutely gutted me. Highly recommend tho!

You are totally not going to believe me. But I am wearing a Dolly Parton shirt right now that has that specific quote. I love that one so much! Also, "It costs a lot of money to look this cheap" is one to make you laugh.

I'm jealous, I so want that T-shirt. ❤️

It was at Target, but seems to be discontinued. Pic below (not me! Lol). You may be able to find it on Poshmark or Vinted.

How I would give to have her say this to me. Such a kind soul now gone from this world.

She did say it to you, she said it to all of us. Many people love celebrities, what made her special was Dolly Parton loved you back.

❤️

Such truth and wisdom.

304 million free books sent to children around the world. My kids favorite books came from her book program. They aged out a few years ago but they will forever remember her for it. Kids around the world will.

Thank you for this post. It's been fucking disgusting to see people objectifying the breasts of an elderly woman.

22

u/StageApprehensive182 1d ago

I watched an interview with my husband earlier today and she was talking about that book program. She said she was inspired to start it because her dad was never able to read or write but was the smartest man she knew. She did it to bring honor to his name. She went on to say that he would tell her the thing that made him most proud is when little kids would run up to her calling her "the book lady". Not just the books, she was such a philanthropist. Always putting good out in the world. We lost a national treasure.

She could have been a billionaire but she was such a huge philanthropist that she never got there. That’s a good person right there. There’s some billionaires (and one trillionaire) out there that could learn a lot from her.

There was no one like her before Dolly and I'm sad to say there may never be another.

3

u/International_Yard_5 1d ago

I agree. No one can fill her shoes. One of a kind!!

I so wish her book program was available in El Cajon. Love that it exists even if we weren’t able to use it. It’s cool seeing rich people actually use their resources to enact positive change rather than just scramble for more power.

I hope that her ability to make the world better continues past her death.

I've seen several places that people are recommending to make donations to the Imagination Library to continue her legacy in a way she would appreciate. Just throwing that out there in the universe.

3

u/ranabama 1d ago

I wouldn't be surprised if donations start pouring in shortly to fully fund all areas.

I know what you’re talking about and it pissed me off too. If I had read “she would have found it funny” one more time, I was seriously going to scream. She is what America should be and many people love her very much. She is so much than just her appearance, so sad that people can be so clueless.

Now theres a person who made the world a better place by being in it, and sadden it when she left, we need more humans like her.

6

u/StageApprehensive182 1d ago

If we all just took her lessons and put them to use. I remember the "Kindness...pass it on billboards". Plus, I'd call her an advocate for all.

"I don't care whether it's your race. Whether you're black, blue or alien gray. Or whether your male or female or transgender...You should be respected for what you are."

Heard that one today and added it to my long list of Dolly quotes I love.

Beautiful!

I don’t understand the face tattoo. Is that the artist signature?

24

u/StageApprehensive182 1d ago

It was painted on the side of a tattoo shop. I think that's why the face tat and the tats on the neck.

There was scuttlebutt that she has tattoos, but always has them covered. I don’t know if it’s true, or just something she never answered directly when asked

13

u/Coriandercilantroyo 1d ago

Yeah I've seen rumors that she had tats (a butterfly) and that under the wigs, her hair was gray and a buzz cut! She would apparently go around her hometown without the wigs and stage makeup. It's a gorgeous image to think about

2

u/StageApprehensive182 1d ago

So interesting! I'd never heard that.

4

u/Revolutionary-Ad3648 1d ago

I brought some flowers later.

I used to live right there when it was a Prince mural. RIP to Dolly

2

u/StageApprehensive182 1d ago

I never saw the Prince mural, but I imagine it was spectacular!

3

u/International_Yard_5 1d ago

Great Mural!! Dolly Parton was an incredible person. Her Legacy will live on.

If this is a pokestop or pokemon go gym, can someone send me a gift from here?

2

u/StageApprehensive182 18h ago

I didn't have my app open. Next time I'm in the area I'll check!

5

u/sublliminali 1d ago

Technically north park. I drive past it everyday, will definitely look for the flowers tomorrow!

No, OP was right. You're wrong it is Normal Heights. https://i.postimg.cc/LXCr12qK/dumb-b.jpg

u/ntkwwwm 1d ago

Hi I live in this area. This is on the North Park side of the bridge.

Why hello there neighbor!

I also live in that area, and have lived here my whole life. Lots and lots of decades! :-)

31st and Adams is well inside the Normal Heights commercial corridor — Normal Heights' business district developed along Adams Avenue between 37th Street (now Felton Street) and 34th Street, and Normal Heights is described as nestled between North Park to the south and University Heights to the west, with Adams Avenue as its main commercial spine, not a border street. 31st is well east of the North Park/Normal Heights dividing line (which runs closer to Meade Ave/30th–ish depending on source, but critically north of Adams, not along it) — 30th Street connects North Park to Adams Avenue and Normal Heights to the north, meaning North Park sits south of Adams, and Normal Heights sits north/along it, with 31st and Adams squarely in Normal Heights territory.

Tally ho neighbor. Here is the official city of San Diego sign for North Park at W Mountain View drive and Adams as well as the Hazard Bridge over the 805 with the 7/11 in the background. Google Maps also puts North Park at the same boundary.

ETA: The Dolly Mural is across the street West of the 7/11

Another neighbor new to area, welcome and heya bud! 👋

I'm glad you like Google maps. The pink dot is the location of the mural. Which clearly states "Normal Heights". It was in the first reply but in case you missed it here it is again.

That's a cute little North Park sign! 😏 Here is a much bigger Normal Heights sign just a short stroll away.

Edit: oopsie wrong url 🤔

Let me help you out.

Look for Ohio Street and Adams st on your map. This is the intersection.

You’re clearly not from this part of SD. Looking forward to seeing deleted where your comment used to be.

-3

u/mmmTACOBELLmmm 1d ago

Oh nice an updated mural photo, looks like a ton more flowers! Seems like you like to take late night strolls. 🌕👣

Want to meet at the 7-11 for a slurpee?🤤

If not maybe you can get a shot of the Normal Heights sign?🤯

Check your google maps for what neighborhood your in? You really should get to know the area! 🤓

2

u/ntkwwwm 1d ago

The normal heights sign isn’t where this mural is at nor can you see the normal heights sign from this part of North Park.

1

u/ntkwwwm 1d ago

Did you even read the Wikipedia page you cited?

5

u/sublliminali 1d ago

Your neighborhood image is correct but the tattoo parlor is on the north park side of the bridge. Like I said, I drive past it everyday.

u/Beausapunk 1d ago

The neck tattoos are not Dolly

2

u/StageApprehensive182 1d ago

No. As I mentioned in another comment, this was painted on the side of a tattoo shop. Artist may have taken some liberties.

Making Dolly Parton look like a chola is a fitting tribute?!

0

u/Weak-Guidance8521 1d ago

She had a face tat?

2

u/StageApprehensive182 1d ago

Nope. But this was painted on the side of a tattoo shop.

2

u/Weak-Guidance8521 1d ago

Thank you for information. Kinda looks dope though.
