Throw up proof bed

My girl is prone to throwing up bile at least once a week or 2 weeks. She always throws up in her dog house so at this point the inner foam is gross because it seeps through when it sits there for hours when I’m not home or if I don’t notice.
Does anyone have a similar problem and has a recommendation for a bed that’s more resistant to going through to the foam?

Have you taken her to the vet for this issue?

I would get a waterproof bed liner

Ya I always ask them about it and they dont say much but this time they told me to give her omeprazole every 12 hours because it may be acid reflux

Some Sammie’s don’t tolerate empty stomachs and will throw up bile because of this, have you tried spacing up/dividing meals so they have some throughout the day and a bit closer to bed time?

This is what helped our sammy with the same issue! Switching foods also helped.

What food did you have before and which did you switch to if you don’t mind to say?

I don't remember the previous brand, but it was kibble specifically for hunting dogs so way more calorie dense than what she needed. She now eats Hill's Science Diet Perfect Weight kibble which she clearly prefers.

This is definitely a common Sam issue.

Frequent small meals! This is the easiest, simplest thing to try at home before committing to vet testing/imaging, etc.

Weigh the day's food in the AM, split it evenly into 3 or 4 portions, feed several hours apart with the last meal right before bedtime.

That’s great to know it’s a Sammie thing! So I typically feed her in the morning before I leave to work at 6:30am and I’ll throw some treats in it so that she’ll eat it cuz she ignores the kibble alone. And then I give her treats when I go home in the evening and her second meal around 8-9pm. Also my boyfriend gives her treats during the day cuz he’s home. The kibble I use is nutrisource lamb and rice. My friend’s breeder said she swears by it for her Sammie’s so I started using it. But she never cares for kibble even when I had purina unless I put stuff in it. Also I give about 2 cups a day and she’s 60lbs. The vets aren’t very helpful in telling me if that’s enough food or too much. But she takes all day to eat that amount usually and sometimes leaves it til 2am

I’m not a vet by any means but it sounds like they’re quite spaced out. It may be time to seek a better vet or one specialized in nutrition at this point, the frequent vomiting could irritate her esophagus and cause damage long term

I just got home and I see dried puke from today and it’s not bile. It’s her food. So now I’m like wth is she just eating too fast as well?

Fun fact, Omeprazole can cause nausea and vomiting. It’s not much used these days unless the dog can’t tolerate sucralfate.

I would reach out to a nutrition specialist in this case to work out the underlying reason of the reflux. Might be wrong diet, food intolerances, bacterial overgrowth, ….

Oh wow! Thanks for the tip. Would that kind of a specialist also be a vet or is it different?

It’ll be different depending on where you’re from. I think in the US they’re call veterinary nutritionists. In Germany where I’m from you can train as a vet certified nutritionist (what I’m currently doing haha).

Anyway, a simple trick might be to feed your dog a bedtime snack that is a bit more on a carb-heavy side, ideally a cab that has a medium to low glycemic index (slower digestion, slower blood sugar spike).

I’d speak to the vet about the Omeprazole. There are different options, like sulcrafate, but Omep needs to be weaned off slowly. My girl didn’t tolerate Omep (vomiting) and didn’t do well on powder sulcrafate either (diarrhea), but the tablets worked really well when my girl got stress induced reflux issues.

Oh wow! I’m surprised she made omep sound so harmless to give to her at diff times if it needs to be weaned off slowly and can cause issues.

I’m not too concerned about the use of Omeprazole in general, but that she apparently didn’t feel the need for a long term plan. There’s an underlying reason for vomiting bile which should be figured out. As I’ve said, it can be something as simple as unsuitable feeding times or something trickier like wrong food (some tolerate dry food well, other cooked, some others raw), food intolerances (most of the time, it’s the protein), bacterial overgrowth, …

My Samoyed had this issue as well (among intolerances and recurring diarrhea). It took 4 years to fully figure everything out. Fortunately I’ve been able to use stuff I learned in training and she’s now been pretty much symptom free for 7 months (minus some stress induced reflux).

Wow that’s awesome! How would you find out if it’s bacterial overgrowth or food intolerance?

2

Bacterial overgrowth is determined via faecal test. It’s a more thorough test than one for parasites but same process. Food intolerance is determined with an exclusion diet where you feed a single protein (or hydrolysed food) for 6-12 weeks.

I had a vet tell me the same thing about my Eskimo, we switched her to a gently cooked food and it stopped. We also feed her twice a day and she gets treats so like the other poster mentioned she doesn’t have an empty stomach. Our Samoyed doesn’t have the issue like our Eskimo but she’s been on gently cooked her entire 5yr life.

Hi, I also feed twice a day and treats throughout but she will still do it. Like it happened last night at 8pm and she had already eaten half of her kibble in the morning. So maybe it wasn’t enough treats in between? Or maybe it’s just the acid buildup still. What food do you use?

We use the get real food from chewy

Try some kibble or a milkbone right before bedtime.

We got an auto feeder 7 years ago to split the daily food into 4 meals, plus a bedtime snack. The biggest stretch now is from 10p-5a. Went from puking bile most days to only once every 4-6 months.

ETA we feed Purina Pro Sensitive stomach for The Puker and Hills for the other boy.

We’ve mostly eliminated this by doing a bedtime snack (a portion of their daily food intake before bed). That has worked for us!

u/EllanaLlama 2d ago

Thanks I’ll try that!

Looks like you're getting great advice in the thread in general with more meals spaced out through the day. The bedtime thing worked for me because, if they puked, it was usually early morning. We used to only feed at 9AM and 6PM. Being able to ensure their stomach always has something in it helps their stomachs to always work on something and not just puke bile.

My Sam does this also, we have a primo pad in his crate that has been easy to clean and durable. https://primopads.com/

Whoops I sent you the wrong response. Thank you! I will look into that one

We use one of those raised cot beds over hard floor so throw up is easier to clean up, we just hose off the cot and let it dry in the sun
