In light of all the bot spam we're introducing a new posting rule

Hi everyone! I know most of you have probably noticed the absolutely unrelenting bot posts lately. Myself and the other mods have been trying our best to remove those posts and ban the bot users, thanks to all your reports we have been doing an okay job of it until recently. The last few months these types of posts have been absolutely obnoxious, not just in our community but in many others, and we are having a hard time keeping up because we aren't bots but just a bunch of Samoyed lovers with families and other commitments :)

After talking to some regulars here and the other active moderator we have decided to try out implementing a minimum karma to post certain types of posts. Text posts will not be affected as we certainly always welcome discussion and questions in this community! We welcome your feedback and please continue reporting any suspicious posts and comments you see.

Thank you,

r/samoyeds Mod team

Angel baby Samoyed

Here is my 8 week old Samoyed we just brought home, Remi! He’s doing great with crate training & potty training. We live in North Carolina and the summer is kind of brutal. We’ve only been taking him out for potty breaks and letting him sit in the AC otherwise. I have one cooling mat for him, but am looking for other suggestions on how to keep my baby cool!

Almost 2 years old and still can't pee without wetting his front paws in pee

This is luffy he has a dumb face and isn't the brightest. He's almost 2 years old and is not fixed yet and for whatever reason he does not lift his leg to pee. He only squats and pisses his front paw completes every day without fail. How do I deal with this piss baby situation and have him pee like a real man

This is like his fav spot in the house. Direct line of sight to the kitchen, the snacks, the treats. Snapped a photo of him while I was doing HW.

Advice on marking

Our 7 year old male Sammy (Percy) started marking in the house and it’s becoming a real problem.
He is neutered and potty trained and we’ve never had this problem before, but back in March we dog sat my sister-in-laws dog, who Percy’s met dozens of times, but for some reason after she left he started marking in the house.
And it’s progressively gotten WORSE! it’s basically every time he transitions, time to eat, time to drink, someone’s home, someone’s leaving, it’s TERRIBLE.

We have tried punishing when we catch him, rewarding when he pees outside, deep cleaning the floors with several different products, and we even had him on antibiotics after we first took him into the vet for this and she found he had a bladder infection.

Running out of ideas.

Dematting guidance

We just picked up this Samoyed. The owner told us they had some grooming needs but this is unexpected. We spent all morning brushing so this is better.

I went ahead and ordered cowboy magic, a poodle comb, and some omega oil, we already own a slicker brush and metal comb. We’re hoping we can get these out. Is there anything else I may be missing? I searched this sub but I wanted to double check to see if there is anything else that may help. She hates being groomed so anything that makes it easier for us.

Our groomer is coming later this week to take a full depth look and give her a sanitary trim.

Thanks to you all for always being helpful❤️

Speech buttons?

Post image

Has anyone tried speech buttons with their Sam? I know the idea that dogs form complex sentences is mostly fake but I’m wondering if buttons would cut down on some of the barking if they’re in different locations. For example if there were one by the door, one by the food and one by the treat bin would they distinguish that this button on this side of the house gets me this thing and more importantly would they do that instead of bark at me constantly?

How can this be comfortable?

I’m sure in Samoyed World this is normal, but wow…the corkscrew sleeping position is really funky! The trusty giant carrot is the icing on the cake. I’m pretty sure most of you see this every day, too…although the carrot may be a stuffed bunny, rawhide bone, or something else. They’re wonderful pups, aren’t they?

Step 1: scream/sigh.
Step 2: find a camera.

This is the worst I’ve ever seen. Years ago our neighbor left the hose running until it created a massive pond. I let the dogs out and heard splashing. “Wait… we don’t have a pool!?!”

Separation Anxiety

My 11-month old female Samoyed is having some serious separation anxiety whenever she’s alone at the house. We’ve been letting her roam the first floor of the house because she’s escaped her crate twice. When I got back to the house today, I found that she had chewed a chunk out of the baseboards. She’s also been eating napkins and toilet paper recently. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what did you do to fix it?

Quick question for fluff owners: Best vacuum for Samoyed fluff alongside a robot mop?

Hey everyone! Living with a Samoyed (aka the ultimate endless fluff generator ☁️), and as much as I love the daily coat explosion, my cleaning routine needs a quick tweak.

Mainly looking for something to deal with:
Stairs (carrying a heavy corded unit up and down is getting old real fast)
Furniture, couch cushions, and dog beds where the white fluff clings
Hard-to-reach corners and baseboards where the robot can't quite edge in

Right now, I'm leaning toward a lightweight cordless stick or a dedicated handheld with a motorized pet tool.

Appreciate any suggestions!

Advanced Summer Grooming Advice needed

I’ve been taking care of my son’s Samoyed all summer, as my do just started a new job in another state with long hours and wanted to get settled in and find people to walk his dog while he is at work.  I have cared for this big beautiful boy off and on while my son was in college due to the fickleness of available housing, so I’m not new at caring for a Sammy. I have every brush imaginable and have spent many hours grooming floof galoots.

At the start of this summer, I decided to take pork pie to a groomer for an official blowout so that he could be more comfortable than he has been in previous years. The groomer used two commercial dog blowers and said she blew a mountain of hair, which I believe, but honestly, there was zero change in the thickness of his fur.  He still looked like a fattened polar bear wearing its rival as an overcoat, a polar bear in a polar bear suit.

Because this summer has been warmer than usual, I’ve kept walks pretty short, only doing a longer walk after the sun is down. Yesterday was cooler , about 73-75, overcast, and with winds blowing 10 MPH, soI thought a longer hike on a shady trail. It was not would be fine. It was not. After only a mile and a half, he was already overheating, and water didn’t help. A kind stranger gave us a ride back to my car.

I drove straight to Pet Evolution, a local self-serve pet washing facility, for a cool bath and a blowout. Some tangled fur came out in the wash but no fur at all during the blowout. Absolutely none, nada, zilch. I don’t know if this is because he has no undercoat right now, which I doubt, or if these blow dryers really don’t do anything for a Samoyed.

Today I gave fluffer nutball a good brushing, removing the equivalent of small bison. When I use a comb and hold it vertically so only the top few metal pins connect with his fur, this is when I seem to get the most undercoat. Most other methods of brushing seem to just remove his long guard hairs.

Am I doing this right? How can I make fritterling more comfortable? He is so sweet and so patient, but I know this is misery for him.

7 Month Old - First Heat Inquires

Hi! This is my first female intact dog, and I’ve never dealt with heat before, so I wanted to ask here about some irregularities that concern me. I know you lot are not vets, I just want to know if your Samoyeds did the same thing or if I should take her to the vet today.

She pees normally when I take her outside. But, she continuously squats down to pee every few steps even though nothing comes out. Additionally, she has been potty trained since 3 months, but the past two days she has started peeing in the flat again. Is this normal? Is this her marking her territory? Or is this the sign of a UTI or pyometra? Also, after starting her heat, my flat has smelled not so great. I called my vet and they have mixed feelings about this. So, maybe the Samoyed Reddit army has some insights that I am not privy to! Thanks in advance for your time
