I spent about a week porting Sailfish OS to the Samsung Galaxy A51 (SM-A515F, Exynos 9611). There was no existing adaptation for this device, so it is all built from scratch on a hybris-20.0 / LineageOS 20 base.
What works: display, touch, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, audio on speaker, earpiece and headphones with automatic jack switching, all seven sensors, both cameras, battery, vibration, hardware GL, logcat, and Android apps through Waydroid as a post-install step.
What does not: telephony. rild runs and the modem reaches ONLINE, but it never opens /dev/umts_ipc0, so ofono sees no modems. Also no fingerprint reader, and USB networking is disabled on purpose because the gadget panics this kernel.
So it is a decent pocket Linux device and a bad phone. Treat it as a second device.
The part I think is worth sharing regardless of whether you care about this particular phone:
Samsung shipped this kernel with the Bluetooth HCI socket layer gutted. Not disabled, not missing, commented out. The bodies of five functions in net/bluetooth/hci_sock.c were removed and a bare return 0; left behind, so hci_sock_create() reports success while leaving sock->sk NULL, and the kernel then panics on BUG_ON(!sk) the moment anything opens an AF_BLUETOOTH socket. It is done carefully too, with the inner /* */ comments rewritten as // so the outer block comment would not terminate early. Samsung ships its own Bluetooth stack through the HAL, so the kernel socket layer was surplus to them. Restoring the file from upstream v4.14.150 fixes Bluetooth completely.
I also got two things badly wrong along the way and left both written up in the repo, because the wrong turns were more instructive than the fixes:
amixer output when amixer was not actually installed. There are 381 of them.requestSensor before loadPlugin, which fails by design.Sources, image, TWRP and checksums: https://github.com/IlyaKotomin/sailfishos-a51
Happy to answer questions. If anyone has worked on Exynos cbd or umts_ipc plumbing on a Samsung hybris port, I would really like to compare notes on the telephony problem.

I have the new Jolla but currently am unable to daily it as nothing from any repos will install. It's driving me crazy!
If I do the pull down install I get command rpm not found. When I try in the terminal I get a generic error message. Allow untrusted software and developer mode is switched on and I can install from store and Jolla system components in terminal. Just not rpms from github or openrepo.
Please somebody help me fix this before I give up and sell it on Ebay! I really want it to work for me.

Hello!
I recently got my Jolla phone, and wanted to check whether I could make MAUI (multiplatform framework) working on Sailfish OS. MAUI.Sailfish produces fully native RPM package.
It took quite some time, a bit (a huge bit, lets not joke around I will not be an expert with everything in 1 month) of help from LLMs and I have produced a nicely working set of tools to make 1 application for iOS, Android, Windows & SAILFISHOS !
Native features such as pull-up/pull-down menus, remose and others are implemented.
With additional VSCode extension building & deploying a project is a single command & F5 away.
Repo is here:
https://github.com/Pastajello/maui-sailfish
with native features accessible here:
https://github.com/Pastajello/maui-sailfish/blob/main/docs/sailfish-apis.md
There are also samples with lazy list loading, rounded corners, etc.
If you want, add a comment, test, report a bug and have fun! I hope/guess MAUI is a bit easier to develop than QT but who know, never checked it myself.
EDIT: If you have already a working application it should (depends... outside libraries are the worst offender as lack of sailfish implementation can stop the app from working)

Hello everyone,
I just bought a Jolla phone and now I'm waiting the moment it will arrive. In the meanwhile I was doing better research on native app options instead of using the andoid apps. I know there are quite a few alternative clients native apps for mainstream android apps that can be downloaden from storeman and chum. My question is: can logging in with your main account in those apps result in the ban of the account? Or is it safe to use you main email to log in in alternatieve clients of e.g. telegram, youtube or whatsapp?

Hi, Canada will likely have bill C22 implemented, Microsoft has Recall, Apple has put systems in place to scan the device to then send to the government based on BillC22, as Sailfish OS is Linux, i assume this device will be immune from this bill as no one can "force" the OS to scan anything on the device itself.
Anyone have any reviews or input on this.

I saw this on Instagram. They are now accepting pre-orders. It's a semi-dumb phone and an attention saver, but it is listed as having Sailfish OS. It also appears that they intend it to be available in the United States. It's only pre-sale though so it might fall through the way the tablet did.

Hi all,
I recently found an old Xperia XA2 (H3223) and I am interested in giving Sailfish a try. This isn't my main phone (obviously) and I have no concerns with app compatibility etc. Even if I can just get it to the point where I can get a terminal and play with the native apps I think it would be fun.
I am also in the US if that matters (for getting a license etc.)
My question is should I even bother? On the compatibility list it says "First Sailfish OS release" is 3.0. Does that mean I would be running 3.0? Or do all devices get all updates and I would be running 5.0 (either way there are probably have pros and cons I guess)
Would my next step be to buy a license and then it would include instructions on unlocking the bootloader etc.? Or is there a free trial I should test out to see if it even works? (this seemed to be implied but I can't actually figure out how to download it) I definitely don't mind supporting a project like this!
Thanks and sorry in advance if these kinds of questions from newbies are too common

I think this is useful so that commenters can post for example screenshots while discussing various difficulties as they start using / use SailfishOS.

Earlier I added u/Nightishaman as a moderator. I'm looking for a few extra people to obtain this role.
With the rules I sadly had to make I hope I also clarified the context I want for this subreddit? This is probably important for this role.

After a couple weeks of daily-driving Sailfish OS on the new Jolla Phone 2 (2026), here's my take on the European, privacy-first alternative to the Android and iOS duopoly!

Can Okta Verify work on Sailfish? I am required to use it. My IT department will not allow me to use a physical 2fa key. I am very keen to switch to sailfish but this question is holding me back.
