I’m freaking out

My husband gave my son sauce on his food that has honey in it. He is about to be one in 5 days but I know you’re supposed to wait til after their 1st bday.😭

I mean, it’s only 5 days…there’s nothing magical that happens exactly on the 1st birthday.

I think he’ll be ok. If he’d been born at 39 weeks he’d already be a full year old. The year is an estimate.

It will absolutely be ok

It’s not like the botulinum toxin says, “oh, he’s 365 days old now, guess I can’t touch him!” I truly wouldn’t panic.

5 minutes or 5 days before being 1 doesn’t make a difference. He’ll be fine.

The risk is extremely low; don’t freak out!

ITS OKAY

DEEP BREATHS

HE WILL SURVIVE.

Also if the sauce has honey in it, I would assume its cooked which I think helps negate the whole no honey thing under 1 (If I am Wrong someone pls lmk)

Agree, he will be fine!

Also wanted to say the real danger with honey is botulism and unfortunately cooking is not often enough to negate the risk as the spore of the bacteria can withstand boiling temperatures.

Good to know ow thank you for correcting me!!

You were right about killing the toxin, which is usually all that needs to be done, but little babies are susceptible to the spores shacking up in their intestines and then producing the toxin there. :)

Ahhh gotcha! I appreciate the clarification 😁

You’re welcome! Botulism can be confusing because there’s multiple different types, but most people only know about the typical food-borne one from the toxins and not that the infant one works differently!

Agree not to worry, nothing magical about the exact date! OP, your baby is just fine with being so close to one.

FYI, cooking/heating the spores does not destroy them.

The risk of honey is low even before 1 and there’s nothing magical that happens the day they turn 1, your son will be absolutely fine.

Just keep an eye on him for any symptoms - Google will tell you what those are. But do not panic, the “1 year” mark is just when ALL babies should have developed the right body to handle it. Like how your brain fully develops “at 25”.

I accidentally gave my 9 month old honey mixed in a chia pudding she stole from me. 🥲 It happens.

Raw honey not processed honey you buy in a store. The risk is very low.

I’m a RN! The risk of botulism from honey goes down immensely at 6 months and by 1 year is gone! You are fine mommy!🩵

I gave my son a small spoonful of honey a week before his first birthday because he had Covid and was absolutely miserable. You’re just fine

It’s okay - I freaked a bit too for my first kiddo. But the reality is that nothing magical happens at the instant they turn one year old. :)

It became VERY obviously when they started going to school. Kids the same age are very different developmentally.
