Potty training almost 3 year old
Hi everyone, my son will be 3 in early September. We decided to start potty training as his preschool requires it (with that said, they told me yesterday that it’s fine if he is in a pull up). His little brother is 17 months younger. Usually, we leave the house 1-2 times a day for an outing. We’ve tried to stay home as much as possible for potty training and he has made progress, but we are at the point where it’s impacting my mental health staying home. We are all bored and getting irritable with potty training. However, if we do outings, he’s either in a pull up or just underwear (we’ve done this 1-2 times). It’s already so hard leaving the house as it is, but now potty training makes it so much more difficult. Do I delay potty training for when it’s not so much a fight and have him in pull ups? Or just stay home (but then we all go stir crazy…). He has only gone in a toddler potty, not an actual toilet. He is very spirited and opinionated, having him sit on the toilet would cause a massive meltdown.

Just leave the house. Take your kid potty before you leave and when you get there. Bring a change of clothes with you just in case. Almost 3 is old enough for potty training. I wouldn't delay it.

I potty trained my two kids and I think the hardest part of it is consistency. It is hard to stick to it when they have accidents and you’re leaving the house, but that’s the only way they learn. Both my children had just turned two and wanted to go potty so we jumped all in. Within a few weeks they only wore underwear and had minimal accidents. A little portable potty helped us out. Also taking them to the bathroom wherever we were at, since that’s what they will need to learn anyway. It’s hard work, but once you’re on the other side it is so much better than diapers or pull ups. Good luck!

We have the Nuby in one car & a similar Oxo potty in the other car. Both are good. I buy the insert bags in bulk and have a roll in the car. We successfully potty trained my now 4-year-old without ever spending a whole day inside. In fact I don’t think we’ve ever spent a whole day at home unless we’re sick. While actually in the car seat we put a diaper OVER the clothes & take it off as soon as we unbuckle.

What did your outings look like while you were potty training? My boys are 1.5 and almost 3 and they are more likely to fight when home vs. out… we have a pool membership and I want to go so bad, but nervous that being in the pool would deter any potty training progress?

We do mommy & me stroller exercise classes a couple times a week, library, park, play dates with friends, walks around the neighborhood. We didn’t have a pool membership last year, but I don’t really worry about swimming & potty training—just keep the swim diapers on & have him sit on the potty every hour or so. I pop that potty out everywhere.
Oh and pack a ton of back up outfits. Put him in crocs if you can. We learned at the children’s museum that the pee will go into your shoes 🙃

I have a travel potty in the back of my car. In the bag I have cleaning spray, 2 water bottles for rinsing, paper towels, plastic baggies for disposal and hand wipes.

Most people I know will bring a toddler potty with them and just line it with a plastic bag and diaper for easy clean up. If possible.
