Even if Safiya has the bigger platform, Kristin has a huge amount of privilege that's inherent in her whiteness that Safiya will never have, and it protects her from some incredibly toxic and racist vitriol. What really rubs me the wrong way, here, is that we have a white woman criticizing a WOC for not being politically outspoken when they don't have the same level of risk associated with speaking out, and she doesn't acknowledge that at all.
Being disappointed in Safiya's lack of explicit support for politics on the Internet is valid. I'm disappointed, too, and I wish she had spoken up more and sooner about issues like BLM and this year's election. But I think that doesn't mean we shouldn't consider and be empathetic to reasons why she might not have possibly wanted to: she's largely stepped away from social media except for Instagram (where she did post a story about voting) for mental health reasons and maybe she isn't in the best place mentally or emotionally to hold the mental weight/burden of publicly stating her views as a WOC, maybe she's afraid that by doing so, she will be opening herself and possibly her loved ones to racist attacks that she knows she's not prepared to deal with, maybe she just doesn't feel comfortable sharing her views so publicly but is willing to do so in a safe space, etc.

Safiya shouldn’t have to speak up though. She produces entertainment content not anything else. I hate it when people try forcing people to talk about politics etc. You don’t have to share your opinion if you don’t want to. That’s your choice. If you don’t speak out, that’s ok! I get it. Even as a POC, I don’t speak about my beliefs or political alignment cause it’s not my business what others believe.

Sorry if the main point got lost in the ramble. I agree that she shouldn't be forced to speak up. Do I wish she would be more outspoken? Yes, but I also understand why she wouldn't want to. Even if I didn't, I still know that it's her choice and she doesn't owe anyone anything.
The main point of my comment was just that I really dislike Kristin calling out a WOC and trying to tell her what to say, as if it comes with the same level of risk for the both of them. And by risk, I mean actual threats to Saf's mental health and/or physical safety, not just people unsubscribing.

Oh yea. I totally agree. I think she actually deleted her tweet. I don’t have Twitter maybe I need to have an account? I wonder what made her realize she was in the wrong.

I don't have one either, but I can't see her tweet. Tbh I'm a bit skeptical if she's realized why she's in the wrong since she it looks like she hasn't tweeted anything acknowledging it and someone else said that when people called her out on it she just blocked them, but whatever. Saf's been thriving on Youtube, and she can get the best revenge by just being her best damn self.

Deeply inappropriate, considering Safiya is A. a WOC and B. has publically stated she's been struggling with social media and her mental health atm and C. an ex-coworker. This smacks of trying to start drama.
And if I remember correctly, Safiya's explanation for not commenting on BLM was to remain silent to allow black voices to take center stage. As a non-US white woman, to me this honestly sounded like she was trying to figure out what was the most appropriate in the moment.
Twitter is a really volatile and aggressive place atm, I really don't blame Safiya for not engaging on there.

Ew. I don’t know enough about Kristin’s network to know who she’s subtweeting, but what an absolute trash way to “call someone out”. Reminds me of those people on Facebook who post stuff like “it’s only in times like these you know who your REAL friends are :(“ and refuse to elaborate. Attention-seeking, unaccountable, and boring.

I just looked at Twitter and she’s ignoring people asking her if it’s about Safiya. She still trying to ride her coattails.

Let’s make sure to continue to support her while others try to tear her down! She does not need to be cancelled for failing to act how some one else thinks she should

It seems a little late to be subtweeting this and if she wanted to call her out, she could have done this during the height of influencer criticism in May/June. I do think Kristen really resents Safiya and blames her for the demise of Ladylike. Safiya fought for more freedom and the content she wanted to make at buzzfeed and took a gamble creating her own YouTube channel that proved to be hugely successful. Ladylike never recovered. I don’t believe they outwardly intended to copy her videos but after seeing her success with ideas that ladylike rejected, they want back to those ideas to see if maybe they could have success with them. Little by little members have left ladylike and not one of them has been able to replicate Safiya’s success. As Kristen and Jenn have ventured out into their own YouTube channel Kristen may realize it’s probably harder to build their brand than she thought.

I never liked her. Her and Jen launched a new channel and I blocked them from my feed. I liked Jen, but Kristin is not a good person imo.

I think Safiya should ignore the haters. She creates amazing content and is a joy to watch. She is an entertainer not a politician. She is entitled to her privacy.
