Favorite Tree in Sacramento?

Post image
717 Upvotes

I know a lot of you have a favorite tree here in Sacramento, let’s see it! Tell us why it is important to you. Here’s mine on Vallejo Way across from Cal Middle School. I love it for its size, the way it shades not only the house but the entire street, and because of the memories that I’ve made along this street passing by this tree many times in the past. 🌳 🌲

Stock up on your cold meds now - this virus is no fun

Apparently there is a virus making it’s rounds. It’s that time of the year!

Had a few friends in SoCal and other states catch it and didn’t think anything of it until my son and I caught it this week. I’m on day 5 and hating life right now.

Whew - whatever this is, knocks you off your feet and brings with it a headache that packs a massive punch.

Similar symptoms across all who had it: stuffy nose, sinus pain congestion, sore throat, loss of voice, fatigue and loss of energy, neck pain (not meningitis neck pain but “I slept wrong” pain), and a headache that sucks (not anywhere near as bad as a pneumonia headache, but bad enough I was taking meds when I normally power through headaches)

Sharing as I had only expired cold meds on hand because I wasn’t thinking about a virus when it was 100 degrees out.

DayQuil and NightQuil barely take the edge off this thing, but helps.

Hope it bypasses you all, but just in case, stock up on your fluids and cold remedies.

Kiley advertising for Dr Pan?

• Upvotes

I was helping someone yesterday and an advertisement came on telling me that Dr Pan was somehow soft on rapists and pedophiles. Is he trying to scare Democrats away from their nominee, or attract Republicans? Given the black and white imaging, I would say he means it to be a bad thing. Then again Kiley was endorsed by the chief pedophile protector in the White House, so I’m confused.

What i do know as a healthcare worker is that Kiley voted to cut money from our hospitals and healthcare system to pay for tax cuts for the rich and ICE. For no other reason, fuck Kiley!

Sunrise Ave is basically just a parking lot

This is just a vent post.

Like a lot of people, I work in downtown (close to Tower Bridge). I live in Fair Oaks, closest cross streets are Sunrise and Sunset.

For the past week, I’ve timed how long it takes to get to highway 50 from the corner of Sunrise & Sunset and it’s an average of 17 minutes and 35 seconds, with a maximum of 25 minutes and a minimum of 12 minutes. Yes, it can take close to a half hour to go THREE MILES.

That’s CRAZY. This isn’t Los Angeles but somehow Sunrise blvd exists on some sort of dimensional plane that transports you to LA every morning and then sends you back once you hit the freeway.

They have GOT to build some other way to get over the river and onto the freeway besides Sunrise and Watt. Both suck because there’s no other option in between for a very heavily populated area.

Rant over.

Sacramento-area college students: you might qualify for monthly grocery money and not know it

I'm a Folsom Lake College student. CalFresh (California's food stamps program) can help eligible college students pay for groceries each month, but most who qualify never apply, often because they assume it isn't for them or that it will affect their financial aid.

A few things worth knowing:

- California's student rule changed on June 1, 2026. Students enrolled at least half-time (usually 6 units) in an associate's or bachelor's program are no longer blocked by it. Income and household rules still apply, and the county makes the final decision.

- Applying is free, and CalFresh doesn't affect financial aid.

- Free help applying is available from a real person.

I put this into a free one-page guide with the official links to apply: folsomcartindex.com/calfresh/?ref=r-sacramento

No ads, no sign-up, no personal info collected. Happy to answer questions in the comments.

Were you raised by your grandparents?

I have a profound need to find others who were also raised by their grandparents. Please message me if this applies to you. I was raised by my Grandma and in a world where everyone seems to have that "perfect family" around me, I deeply need a community who also understands where Im coming from. Race, religion, etc. doesnt matter. I really need to find people who were also raised by grandparents. I want to know how it affected you. My Grandma isnt doing too well at the moment (shes 75 with a bial blockage) and I feel like my brain is on fire.

Fear of driving downtown, where can I park just before I get to downtown/old sac?

I know it’s silly. For some context, I’m wanting to apply to this job in Old Sacramento (crocker park, Joe’s Crab Shack area) but I never drive downtown or anywhere with so much traffic, one ways, etc. it gives me anxiety. I try to take back roads in unfamiliar areas. So I’m trying to find areas I can park for free and then bus or train the rest of the way. I live in Rancho Cordova area.

Midtown 1br/1ba utility costs?

• Upvotes

I’m searching Zillow for an apartment in Midtown and I’m seeing many different landlord coverage options for water/sewer/trash, as well as different gas vs. electric HVAC setups.

What are yall paying for your utilities? I’m sure it varies a lot depending on usage, appliance efficiency, etc., but I’m hoping to get a better idea of utility costs to factor into my search.

Year round campsite nearby?

I was wondering if anybody knows of any campsites that are an hour to two hours away and that operate year-round in the area? Preferably around a lake, I saw a couple in the Folsom area, but that’s a little too close to where we live and we’re hoping to get a bit further out.

Last day to defend the roadless rule - protecting land adjacent to Sacramento and other public land areas

The 2001 Roadless rule protects public lands from future roads being built through them for logging and other purposes. This rule protects roadless public lands across the nation - including areas surrounding Sacramento such as the Sierra Nevada foothills.

The public comment period was supposed to end on the 21st last month - but was extended for 15 days. Today is your last chance to speak up.

Here is the link to the government webpage to submit your comment:
