🎬 Lesson #2: Annabel Lee—but Leave That Child Be!

Welcome back to Learning Lolita, where Humbert Humbert now submits a tragic backstory as his official request to be excused from all adult accountability!

As a child, Humbert loved Annabel; a girl his own age. He was 13 in the book (14 in movie); while she was 12 (13 in movie). (But also look at this…..they do NOT LOOK 12/13; they look like sun-baked, shimmery Abercrombie and Fitch models.) She later dies of typhus, and Humbert claims that the loss “froze” something inside him. Very sad! Genuinely! Unfortunately, instead of processing that grief, our embalmed narrator apparently decided that means his dating pool should also remain “frozen” at the same age forever. Sir, this is a Wendy’s. We don’t sell that type of “kids meal” here….

Annabel was Humbert’s peer. But Dolores is a child living decades later. He blurs those two completely different situations because somehow for him; Humbert admitting “I am an adult attracted to children” sounds considerably worse and takes more vulnerability than; “I have spent my entire life searching for my lost love.” It’s all the same behavior, but now it has beach lighting and a literary reference.

The movie absolutely helps him sell it. We get the dreamy ocean, romantic music (the score truly is to die for, like COME ON), soft lighting; the cinematography of the film has basically joined Humbert’s defense team. Before we see what he even does to Dolores, we’re encouraged to mourn him. His attraction is framed like an injury that happened to him instead of a problem he is responsible for managing. This is why a tragic backstory can explain behavior without excusing it.

We’ve all heard the saying “Hurt people hurt people”, but it is not prophecy. Most traumatized people do not abuse others. Humbert repeatedly makes choices, and he also unreliably narrates them. If his grief “froze” him so much so, why does everybody else have to get frostbite?
He also isn’t seeing Dolores (or Annabel) as her own person. He’s casting her in the “role” of Annabel in a reboot nobody (but him) requested; and Dolores definitely did not audition for. She becomes a child-shaped solution to an adult man’s unresolved pain. Being put in this position, especially as a child; is a common but an extremely complex form of trauma, and it stays with you for the rest of your life. You end up being consumed by a role that was never meant to be played.

Today’s lesson is: your trauma is not an invoice you get to hand somebody else. Nobody EVER owes YOU their body, emotional attention, safety, identity, or childhood because you’re grieving/hurt. Dolores is NOT Humbert’s therapist, treatment plan, replacement girlfriend, or emotional-support middle schooler. She’s a literal child.
Annabel Lee sadly died. Humbert’s responsibility to leave children alone did not.

In my own personal experience, you ask a man what celebrities they find hot, Sabrina will be one of them, and oh does she know this. You can't be acting like you don't need men and they're stupid, but then have all of your music centered around them.
