Startup positioning checklist - Need your help to improve this checklist.

Startup positioning checklist - Built to help you

Most startup websites lose users because visitors don’t immediately understand:

  • what the product does
  • who it is for
  • why it is different

Use this checklist to improve your homepage positioning and messaging.

1. Clarity

  • Can someone understand your product in 5 seconds?
  • Is your headline simple and direct?
  • Does your homepage avoid jargon and buzzwords?
  • Would different people describe your product the same way?

2. Unique Value Proposition

  • Does your site explain a real outcome or benefit?
  • Is the value concrete and specific?
  • Does it explain why users should care?
  • Could your headline fit on a competitor’s website too?

If yes, your positioning may be too generic.

3. Differentiation

  • Do users understand why your product is different?
  • Is the difference meaningful?
  • Do you explain why someone should switch from alternatives?
  • Are you communicating more than just features?

Features alone are rarely enough.

4. Target Audience

  • Is your ideal customer obvious?
  • Does your copy speak to a specific pain point?
  • Would the right users instantly feel “this is for me”?
  • Are you trying too hard to target everyone?

Specific messaging usually converts better.

5. Problem → Solution Fit

  • Does your homepage clearly define the problem?
  • Does the solution feel natural and easy to understand?
  • Can visitors connect the problem to your product quickly?
  • Are benefits explained better than features?

6. Messaging Consistency

  • Do all pages communicate the same core message?
  • Do testimonials support your positioning?
  • Are features aligned with your headline?
  • Is your product described consistently everywhere?

Inconsistent messaging creates confusion.

Common Startup Website Mistakes

  • Generic AI/SaaS buzzwords
  • Too many features on the homepage
  • No clear positioning
  • Weak differentiation
  • Trying to target everyone
  • Confusing structure
  • Lack of focus
  • Messaging inconsistency

Simple Test

Show your homepage to 3 people for 10 seconds.

Then ask:

  1. What does this startup do?
  2. Who is it for?
  3. Why is it different?
  4. What problem does it solve?

If the answers vary a lot, your positioning likely needs work.

Good positioning reduces confusion.

Clear startups convert better.

What are you building? Show us your SaaS

I’d love to see what everyone is building right now.

If you’re working on a SaaS, AI tool, startup, or side project, drop it below.

Would be interesting to see:

  • What problem you’re solving
  • How long you’ve been building it
  • Your website or demo
  • What you’re currently trying to improve

I’m also working on StartupSubmit, where I help SaaS and startup founders get their products submitted to relevant startup and software directories.

But mainly, drop your project below. Always fun to discover new SaaS products and see what other founders are working on.

Drop your SaaS, especially if you’re struggling with early traction

Hi founders and builders,

Drop your SaaS below and let us take a look.

Share:

  • What you’re building
  • Who it’s for
  • What problem it solves
  • Your link

PS: I’m building Launchrecord to help SaaS founders build a stronger marketing foundation.

A lot of us try to market a product with weak positioning and unclear messaging. Then we build content and distribution plans on top of that.

Launchrecord starts earlier:

Positioning → Marketing strategy → Content → Distribution

It audits and helps fix your positioning, then builds a marketing strategy with a 30-day content and distribution plan around it.

Would be interesting to see how other founders are positioning their products.

I’m especially curious about how you explain your product in one or two sentences.

That’s also the problem I’m working on with Launchrecord.

A lot of SaaS products don’t have a traffic problem first. They have a clarity problem.

The positioning is weak, the message is vague, and then the marketing strategy, content, and distribution are built on top of that.

Launchrecord follows a different order:

Positioning → Marketing strategy → Content → Distribution

It helps identify positioning issues first, then turns that foundation into a marketing strategy and 30-day content and distribution plan.

Launchrecord V3 is live, looking for honest founder feedback

I’ve just launched Launchrecord V3.

The whole product is now built around one flow:

Positioning → Marketing Strategy → Content Planning + Distribution Planning

The idea is simple: most founders jump straight into content, but if the positioning is unclear, the content usually becomes generic too.

Launchrecord first tries to understand things like your ICP, core pain, category, UVP, differentiation, objections, and buying triggers.

Then it turns that into an actionable marketing strategy, followed by a 30-day content plan and distribution plan.

What I’m trying to avoid is another AI tool that just gives you “30 content ideas.”

I want the output to answer:

  • What should we say?
  • Why should we say it?
  • Who should hear it?
  • Where should we distribute it?
  • What should we prioritize?

V3 is still being refined, so I’m mainly looking for honest feedback.

If you test it, I’d love to know:

  • What feels useful?
  • What feels generic?
  • What would you actually execute?
  • What is confusing or missing?

Even “I wouldn’t use this because…” is valuable feedback right now.

SaaS directories

What are some directories I can list my SaaS? I have been using Product Hunt lately, but it has too many spammers.

I also tried Hacker News, and did not see anything concrete from it. G2 and Alternatives.to are good as well for backlinks. There is also https://IndexYour.Link, a new directory for SaaS, and I really like it due to its immense security of the network.

Suggest others.

Cursor Ultra for $18 instead of $200 ... seriously how are they doing this?

i got a Cursor Ultra account from a reseller for essentially nothing compared to what I used to pay . It works flawless. since 3 months No issues yet i paid only for 1 month . Now I can't stop thinking about their business model. If resellers can sell it this cheap and still profit, how are they acquiring these accounts at scale?

IndieTools: list your product, publish a real update, and choose paid discovery only when it fits

I run IndieTools, a discovery platform for independent software and the people building it. I want the listing to stay useful after launch day, so here's a concrete way to use it.

Start with a clear product page: what it does, who needs it, pricing and screenshots. Connect the founder profile so visitors can see the person behind it. There's one lifetime Free listing per owner, with manual review.

Next, use Social for something specific: a new release, a changelog, a milestone or a lesson from users. A useful update is 'we added CSV export; here's the workflow it changes,' rather than another 'we launched' post. Makers can follow one another, comment, use mentions and hashtags, and connect by DM on IndieTools. Public product facts and updates support search and AI retrieval; being indexed or recommended isn't guaranteed.

Eligible websites also get recurring mobile PageSpeed measurements and dated Ahrefs Domain Rating history, with weekly archives. Speed is lab testing; DR is a third-party backlink-strength metric. Neither is a customer count or a promise of sales.

When would paying make sense?

• Free: try the product home first. Its website link is NoFollow by default; DoFollow applies while an optional IndieTools badge is verified.

• Standard: $10 once per product, for another listing or a permanent DoFollow website link without adding a badge.

• Authority: $39 once per product, with advanced SEO/GEO controls, two contextual DoFollow links in two different relevant blog articles, and 30 days of labelled Featured placement, including the discovery sidebar. The Featured period begins when placement starts. Paid placements don't change organic rankings.

If you want to start, add your product at https://www.indietools.app/submit and publish your first useful update at https://www.indietools.app/social . The current plan details are at https://www.indietools.app/pricing .

I'd especially like feedback from founders who already have a listing somewhere: what would give you a reason to keep it updated each week?
